The February 12, 2007 meeting of the Haralson County Historical Society was called to order by President Karen Higgins. The minutes from the January 8, 2007 meeting were approved as read. Jana Gentry was not able to attend, but she had given me her Treasurer’s report. After income and expenses our balance is $10,695.37. The motion was made to accept her report also. The following people were present: Terrell McBrayer Ron Feigenblatt Lisa Tamasi Naomi Black Roy Black Charles Jarrell Mary Jarrell Karen Higgins Jeri Ezell Stephanie Jarrell Peggy Kimball Jolaine Sims Roy and Naomi Black were welcomed to the meeting. Terrell McBrayer gave the Building Report: Roofing slate has been found, we are checking on size, not sure exactly how much we need, but at least several pieces. Some foundation work is needed in the vault. Also the mail buggy needs some new fabric, but it is coming along. Terrell also told us about the One-Room Schoolhouse. We have written permission to relocate it to Buchanan. There are three possibilities for locations: next to the Wade House, next to City Hall, and a third location that has not been disclosed yet. We discussed the [reprinted nominally 1978] History book, and where all of our copies have gone. We talked about the Streetscape. Greg Poteet says they will let us see the plans as soon as they are approved. We have planned a courthouse work day for March 10 from 9am to noon. We welcomed Jolaine Sims, the Media Specialist from Buchanan Elementary School. She came to tell us how much she liked the idea of the reading incentive plan and how we could use two sets of history/social studies books, which she already has in the school library, and how she can track how many have been read by each child. She also told us that the children already read these books and love them. After some discussion about the problem we have had with a lot of people forgetting to pay their dues, the motion was made and seconded, with a unanimous vote, to change the operating year to January through December. We had a problem with damage to the phone cord. This apparently happened this weekend between 2:00pm Saturday and 7:00am Monday morning. How did it happen? We need to find out so it doesn’t happen again. We have to replace the cord. Karen suggested several fundraising ideas: Tree kits, First aid kits, Pizza, Cookies. We’ll discuss them more next month. Karen has donated a book to our Genealogical Library: "Tracing Your Civil War Ancestors." We discussed the new history book we are planning, what we want to include in it, and how we want to go about setting it up. The motion was made and seconded, with a unanimous vote, to purchase "Horses of the Presidents" for $27.95 to check the quality of the printing (printed by BookSurge), to see if this is how we want to print our history book. Charles Jarrell told us about the serious damage to the floor of the [entry-level-floor, northern-windows] meeting room. Roy Black made an estimate of approximately $2,100.00 to complete the necessary repairs. The motion was made and seconded, with a unanimous vote, to advance Roy $500.00 for supplies to get started immediately on the repairs. Blinds will be installed March 9th. One Mission Statement has been submitted for our consideration. This was by John Norton. We will discuss our plans to adopt his version at next month’s meeting. Roy Black has donated a picture of Peggy Kimball, which he painted, to the historical society. It will be hung in the Genealogical Library. There being no further business, the meeting was adjourned.
