Haralson County Historical Society Minutes Meeting Monday Oct. 8th 2007 Meeting called to order at 6:30. The following people attended: Lisa Tamasi, Peggy Kimball, Horace Kimball, Ron Feigenblatt, Frank McIntire, Stephanie Jarrell, Jana Gentry, Helen Higgins, Julia Norton, John Norton, Karen Higgins, and Terrell McBrayer. Ron promoted the Tallapoosa Historical Society's production of “From Possum Snout to Tallapoosa” on October 12 & 13. He requested volunteers to sell tickets. Per Karen, Jeri is unable to attend because of illness. Peggy Kimball volunteered Lisa Tamasi to take notes in her place. Karen read the minutes from the last meeting. They were approved. Jana briefly went over the budget and left a copy for Ron to post on the website. The original is attached. Terrell made the request that the Wade House and the Little School House be included as well. The budget was accepted. Per Terrell, the fencing around the heating & air units were completed at a cost of $2200.00. He requested volunteers for the fund raising BBQ and auction. He gave us an update on the Little Creek Schoolhouse. It is on foundations but 1 side has rotted and must be replaced. Most of the floor has been replaced. The biggest hardship in the repairs is finding the specific style of wood. Julia stated she was aware of several possibilities of old buildings with the needed wood, and would let Terrell know the locations. Terrell will check these out. Liability insurance has been taken care of. We then spoke at length about the “Great Pumpkin Caper”. It is scheduled for Monday the 29th, with the rain date ‘to be announced’ if needed. To help get the schools involved as a learning tool, Ron suggested the ‘Sputnik” theme. The 50 year anniversary is this year and can be used as way to learn about outer space and also be a fun theme for the festival…the aliens eat Buchanan and so forth. Ron has some flyers to present to the schools, and also has decorated the library lobby with a model Sputnik with sound effects. Activities to be included, and notes on each: >Pie Eating Contest Officer Labo and his KOP volunteers will help man the pie eating contest. Pies will be donated by Waffle House. Lots of discussion about the details. Most popular idea was to have contest in age groups- 4-7 and 8-12. Parents must sign a waiver and be present. Karen has a stop watch and needs a couple more. Will give each participant 2-3 slices of pie and fastest to finish is the winner. Possible prize-Waffle House gift certificate. >Costume Contest The PTO is in charge of this contest. ?Fortune Telling Lisa Tamasi and Naomah Black will be doing fortune telling in the back staircase. The charge will be $1.00 and the proceeds will go to the library. >Food During the meeting, caramel apples were sampled. They were too big, but other than that seemed to go over well. Peggy said she will help provide chili and candy bags. Coffee, Hot Chocolate will be donated by Waffle House. We still need donations of: Chili, crackers, cheese, onions, hot dogs, buns, condiments. John suggested foot long hot dogs with oddly colored condiments for artistic fun. John spent too much time in Amsterdam. We have not had a lot of luck with the new manager of Piggly Wiggly when it comes to discounts and donations. Suggestions included the Bremen Piggly Wiggly (different owner) or other local store. Ball Park Franks are available on sale at Wal-Mart for $1.00 a pack. Candy can be kept to a minimum as the local businesses are also giving out candy bags. Prices discussed –sodas $1.00, hot drinks 50˘. >Moonwalk The people who run the moonwalk are self sufficient and will need no help from us! >Storyteller Jana has acquired a professional storyteller who will give 3 readings, at 6:30, 7:00 and 7:30. They will be in the main library room so the doors can be shut and the listeners will have plenty of floor space to sit on. Also- -John and Julia know a face painter and will ask her about having a table. -Table and chairs must be acquired and set up. -Short work lights were recommended for lighting. -A sound system would allow for creepy sounds to be broadcast, and also for directions to be given-for example to instruct costume contest participants when and where they need to be. -Another idea was novelty type acts…stilt walkers, jugglers, magicians, clowns. -Karen wants to order another velvet rope to deny access to the upstairs via the front staircase. -cashiers need to have lots of $1’s and quarters. -need someone (Karen) to check on foil wrappers, creamer, sugar, and sweetener. Other business discussed- The Chamber Expo at West Central is November 3, 2007. We will need fliers, membership forms, promo pieces for the Smithsonian exhibit. We will have a reusable sign made…3x8 with a graphic of the courthouse. T-shirts were also mentioned, possibly utilizing the same design as the sign. The Smithsonian people plan a site visit this winter. The exact exhibit location is yet to be decided but next to the soda shop seems the best location. The roof will have to be raised but the owner is agreeable to allow a grant to pay for it. The streetscape project will be another 6 months or more. We will get 100 crossties as a temporary fix on the mudslide problem. Trustees can provide labor. Clovis Momon Scholarship fund added $59.50 since the fall fair. Stephanie Jarrell has gotten the bank to give us a special account. Frank McIntyre has put out “Save Our Library” buckets in various locations. He donated $30.00 earned in 1 week. Meeting was adjourned at approximately 8:00 pm with most of the participants picking caramel out of their teeth. [Author: Lisa Tamasi; edited by Jeri Ezell via Ron Feigenblatt]
