The Heritage

May 2004

The Haralson County Historical Society has been busy this year. Several of the members participated in the Haralson Middle School’s "Heritage Days" and look forward to participating again in the next one.

Dedication of the Courtroom was held earlier in the year. The room was dedicated to the memory of the late Honorable James Murphy, an attorney from Bremen and brother to Tom Murphy, former Speaker of the House of Representatives. Work on the building has finally been completed and the elevator has been installed to reach the courtroom.

The Quilters continue meeting every Monday morning in the Historic Courthouse and are extremely helpful at the Festivals. They will be making their famous sausage and biscuits at the “Fair on the Square” May 15. Several more events are planned for the year.

May is Membership Month. Anyone interested, please come join us. We need new ideas and workers. The Society meets every 2nd Monday (except December) at 7 p.m. (new time) in the Historic Courthouse in downtown Buchanan. Without the support of all our members who volunteer their time, none of these events would have been accomplished. We love and appreciate all of you who are so helpful. We look forward to continuing with preserving our history and our Historic Courthouse.

Peggy Kimball, President

Buchanan-Haralson Public LIBRARY NEWS

One of the busiest places in Buchanan these days is the public library that is located downstairs in the Historic Courthouse. The library celebrated it’s first birthday on February 15, 2004 and continues to be a great success. More than 300 library cards have now been issued to patrons and the number of items circulated during the month of March totaled over 1400.

The library’s holdings include hundreds of books, video and audio tapes, DVDs, local newspapers and current magazines for both kids and adults. Internet access for public use is also available. Special efforts are now being made to organize the many old records of educational, familial, churches, cemeteries, local history, etc. into a catalogued, on-line Special Collection which can be more easily used by those doing historical research and also will be better preserved for the future. Buchanan-Haralson Public Library is a part of the statewide PINES Network which joins almost 250 other libraries in the state. Thus, Haralson County’s patrons have access to millions of books and materials.

Jana Gentry is Branch Manager of the library and Jessica Perry is an assistant. They are busy preparing for the summer’s Vacation Reading Program, "Step to the Beat-READ!" This program will welcome children of all ages at 3:00 p.m. each Tuesday beginning June 8. A special entertainer will meet with the children in the upstairs courtroom each week and enjoy guitar, reading and telling wonderful stories, singing, juggling, etc. The children will receive colorful folders in which they will keep track of their reading during the summer months. Be sure to come and join the fun!

Getting a library card is a simple process and FREE. It will offer you a wealth of fun and information, so if you don’t have yours yet, be sure to get one this summer. The library's hours of operation are Monday - Thursday 11:30 A.M. - 6 P.M. and Saturday hours will be 10 A.M. - 2 P.M. The library is closed on Fridays and Sundays.
