In order to secure a final resting place for his family, Thomas J. Doster set
aside, in his will, land for the Doster Cemetery. The will was dated 25 April,
1873, and was probated 3 Aug., 1874. "One or more acres shall be set apart
around the family graveyard for a burying ground and used for no other purpose
but a cemetery." Located on Creek Nation Rd. in Jackson County, Georgia, the
cemetery is shaded by a small grove of trees and is lovingly maintained by
Doster descendants.
Now buried in the Doster Cemetery are Dosters, Phillips, Roberts, Brooks, Irvins
and 21 other associated families. These names include one mysterious stone that
reads, "ON TAT WA Bornd Sept the 21 1845 Died Aug the 22 1873." There are
many graves whose markings have long been lost to the weather and vegetation.
The cemetery is a testament to the hardships faced by these families over the
past 150 years. The average life span on the marked stones is approximately
37 years. You will notice the large number of infant graves and the large
number of military tombstones. Men of these families fought in virtually every
war, the military stones have been set to honor their service.
