BELL, McELHANNON John Carpenter 28 Jan 1997
Two of my gggrandfather's siblings married children of John BELL who came to Jackson County from North Carolina. Margaret BELL married Christopher McELHANNON in 1806. His sister Eleanor married one of Margaret's brothers, whose first name I don't know, but who as far as I know has only one living descendant, an elderly man named Buffinton in Pendergrass, Georgia. I believe the elder BELLs moved from Georgia to Tennessee. This is all I know, but strongly suspect they are the BELL witch family.

DANIEL Carol Bertucci 16 Nov 1997
I am looking for any information I can possibly find regarding my great grandfather Charlie Lee DANIEL. I know absolutely nothing of his family other than his marriage to my great-grandmother Evie Lou Rainey WOOD DANIEL.
Charlie Lee DANIEL was born January 1, 1873 and died March 2, 1929. I do not know the place of his birth only that he met and married Evie Lou in Jackson County. It is possible that he was born there. I do know that he died in Fulton County, Georgia.
If you should have any possible information, I would be greatly appreciative.
Sincerely,
Carol Ferguson Bertucci

Looking for information on the DELAY and FERGUSON families who lived in Jackson and Clarke Counties from the 1840's on and also in what would later become Oconee and Barrow Counties. Probably in the Bogart area. James S. FERGUSON married Mary T. DELAY in 1848 in Jackson Co. James died of wounds in the Civil War, Mary died in Oconee County in 1909. I have no evidence as to who their parents were, or where they are buried. Any help will be greatly appreceated, and I will gladly share any information that I have.

DORRIS J. Scott Dorris Feb 1 1997
I am looking for additional information regarding James DORRIS and -his son- Jasper Newton DORRIS. Jasper served in the Confederate army during the Civil War (Company A, 22nd Regiment Georgia Volunteer Infantry). Jasper is my great grandfather. All leads are greatly appreciated.
The following is excerpts from: The Dorris Family: Pioneers of Milton County (by
Caroline Dillman from "The Alpharetta Revue")
"James DORRIS owned hundreds of acres of land in the Crabapple area and ran a store
there. The customers who patronized his store included indians as well as whites. A list
of persons who bought from and traded with James DORRIS from 1835 to 1844 is included
here. James DORRIS was born in 1801 and died in 1877. He married Nancy COOK, an indian,
who was born in 1799 and died in 1887. James DORRIS was born in Abbeyville, South
Carolina; later resided in Augusta, Georgia and in Jefferson Jackson County, Georgia; and
eventually moved to what was originally Cherokee County but became a part of Milton County
and is now part of Fulton County. His father, also James DORRIS (probably Sr.) was
originally from Holland and had two brothers, William and John. There seems to be no
record of William's descendants, and most of John's decendants settled in Douglas County,
Georgia. The younger James DORRIS, who had the store, was the father of eight children,
four of whom died young and four lived to have children of their own. These latter four
were W.C. DORRIS, who married Mary GALEHAUGH; Permelia DORRIS, who married W.D. RUKER;
Elizabeth DORRIS who married N.W.H. COOK; and J. Newton DORRIS, who married Fannie
GILLISPIE."

EDWARDS, JONES, SPALDING Joanna Ahrendt 30 Nov 1997
I am seeking any information on the family of John EDWARDS and his wife, Frances EDWARDS. According to John's pettion for a Revolutionary War pension (which was made by Frances) it states the application was made by veteran's widow, Frances EDWARDS, on 19 April 1846 at which time she was a resident of Jackson County, Georgia. She gave her age as 76 years. Also she stated they moved to Jackson County, Georgia in 1833. Her husband died 3 August 1838. It states her daughter, Jane JONES, formerly Jane EDWARDS, of Jackson County, Georgia, gave a power of attorney to secure pension due her mother, Frances EDWARDS. In addition on 19 April 1855, Joab JONES of Jackson County, Georgia, stated he was the legal hier of John EDWARDS , deceased of Jackson County, Georgia and appointed H. C. SPALDING his lawful attorney to prosecute the claim due Mrs. Frances EDWARDS, widow of John EDWARDS.
Any help in locating this family would be greatly appreciated.
EPPERSON Jim Epperson 13 Apr 1997
I am trying to find where Littleberry EPPERSON originated from prior to being in Jackson County, Georgia in 1805 participating in the Georgia Land Lottery. Since he and Anderson EPPERSON had consecutive draws, I am assuming they were related. Anderson EPPERSON I know bought land on the Mulberry Fork of the Oconee in 1801, which could mean that Littleberry was also there then.
If there are any sources that you know of that would help me discover when Littleberry arrived in Georgia, who with, and where from, I would be very thankful. He was in Tennessee after not receiving land in the lottery later in 1805 and I have records of my line of the EPPERSON's leading to me since then. I can not, however, get to before 1805 (possibly 1801).
Thanks.
Jim Epperson
EPPERSON Jim Epperson 27 Apr 1997
I am trying to find information on Littleberry EPPERSON. I found where he participated in the land lotteries in Jackson County, did not receive land, and moved on to Tennessee. I do not know, however, when he arrived in Georgia or where from.
I have all the information on his branch of the EPPERSON family after Littleberry arrived in Tennessee in 1805 and then on to me. I assume that he was with Anderson EPPERSON, given their consecutive numbers in the drawing. I do not know if Anderson is his brother, father, or what. I do not know Littleberry's wife's name either.
If you know of any records that would assist me, please contact me. I have information on a number of EPPERSON's in early Virginia, but have not been able to link Littleberry back to them.
Thanks for your help.

EZEL/EZELL Mel Schmidt 2 Mar 1997
My third great grandfather William EZEL/EZELL was granted land in Jackson County, Georgia. This is from the "Index to the Headright and Bounty Grants of Georgia, 1756-1909. On 2 November 1816, he received 285 1/2 acres, bounded on the S.E. by Hamilton and Caselberry, S.W. by Hamilton, N.W. by Watts and N.E. by Henderson's land (Grant Book K.5, p 743). William died 16 February 1825, in Gwinnett County, Georgia.
My question, where is Grant book K. 5 kept? Does it include a plat? Does it contain enough information to locate the property on a current map. My suspicion is that it is now in Barrow County.
Is there a tax index for the 1820's? William EZEL/EZELL sold 4 parcels of land between 1809 and 1811 recorded in Jackson County. Would these transactions include a plat?
It would seem that for as many land transactions as William had, he would have left a will. To date I have not been able to find one. Can you give me some suggestions?
Thank you very much.

HAGGARD, MEADOWS Steve Carson 29 Jun 1997
Seeking information on the family of Samuel HAGGARD (Sr.) (born between 1749 and 1756 in Virginia; died about 1810 in Jackson County, Georgia.) Of specific interest are two sons James HAGGARD (born between 1770 and 1774 in North Carolina; married 8 January 1807 in Jackson County, Georgia; died 1 April 1836 in Wartrace, Bedford County, Tennessee) and Samuel HAGGARD (Jr.) (born 26 September 1778 in Surrey County, North Carolina; married 17 December 1804 in Harmony Grove, Jackson County, Georgia; died 21 November 1847 in Bedford County, Tennessee). I am especially interested in knowing when and why they moved to Tennessee, if they moved with a group of other families. I am also interest in identifying the ancestors of the wife of Samuel HAGGARD (Jr.), Mahalia MEADOWS (or similar spelling). In this regard, I am interested in obtaining a copy of the family bible records of Samuel HAGGARD (Jr.) which are seen mentioned in some family histories for related families. I find that different genealogists have associated Mahalia with two different people. The first is Mahaley MEADERS, daughter of John Milton MEADERS and Mollie JUSTICE. The second is Mahalia MEADOWS, daughter of Michael MEADOWS and Jane McBride.

HICKMAN, O'NEAL Malinda H. O'Neal 6 Mar 1997
Looking for information on family of William HICKMAN, died May 15, 1816, in Jackson County, Georgia. Married Lucretia STRICKLIN, December 19, 1762 in Edgecombe County, North Carolina. William's Will was probated Sept. 2, 1816, in Jackson County. He had five sons: Josiah, William Theopolius, Nataniel, and Jacob HICKMAN. Daughters, some with married names, are Lucretia HOLLAND, Sarah CASTLEBERRY, Tamar WHITMORE, Jenny DUNN, Usby GRANTHAM, Uphe MOONEY, Mourning HEATH and Christianna THOMAS. William's son Josiah and son-in-law, Richard HEATH, were the Exrs. of his Estate.
Josiah and Mary HICKMAN had two children that I know about - William and Elizabeth or Eliza HICKMAN. Their daughter, Elizabeth or Eliza, married Joseph or G. O'NEAL, circa 1818 and born in Georgia. Elizabeth was also born circa 1818 and in Georgia. It is Joseph or G. O'NEAL that I am especially interested. I have not been able to find any information on him, except on the Alabama 1840 Cherokee County Census. He and his wife, Elizabeth or Eliza, had two boys noted on the Census as under 5 years of age. On the 1850 Census of Cherokee, Eliza (as she is listed), is married to John C. LEWIS and there are three O'NEAL boys listed. James, age 13, Joseph, age 11, and Benjamin, age 9. Josiah and Mary HICKMAN are listed as living with their son, William and his wife and children, next to the LEWIS'.
The court house of Cherokee County, Alabama burned twice before 1890, and my research has stopped there. If anyone has knowledge of my HICKMAN or O'NEAL family, I would appreciate any information that can be provided.

"Whit" HILL (1815-1899) who married Emily PEPPERS, daughter of Parker PEPPERS and wife, Matilda of Monroe, Walton County, Georgia. KERBOW George B. Williams 28 Nov 1996
I am researching Francis Marion KERBOW of Jackson County, born near Hochghton. Crossed over to Texas in 1867. Daughter Lula born 8 February 1878 in Enlow, Texas.
George B. Williams
KERBO, WILLIAMS George B. Williams 9 Dec 1996
The known story of the KERBOW's is traced from Anson, North Carolina where William and Joseph KERB resided and volunteered for service in the Revolutionary Army. They were present at Yorktown when Cornwallis surrendered 19 October 1781. Their descendents are eligible for membership in the S/DAR and are therefore the subject of a family search carried on by Alva Lee KERBOW of Houston, Texas more than 30 years ago. I only have part of his research.
A Joseph (1755-1850) showed up in Edgefield, South Carolina and was believed to be the father of Solomon David KERBO I (about 1777-1830) also of Edgefield. Solomon David I migrated to Jackson County, Georgia (date unknown) followed by Joseph abt 1830. There is not a clear link between the two Joseph's and that is the contention in the effort to document eligibility for membership in the S/DAR.
Alva Lee KERBOW states that 1) the family of John and Mary Ann Smith KERBO, 2) the family of Francis Marion and Frances Rebekah HOSCH KERBO, 3) Frances (Fanny) KERBO (widow of Dock Singleton KERBO, and 4) Mary HOSCH (Frances Rebekah's mother, left Jackson County, Georgia in 1867, making the "long, arduous, and hazardous overland trip" to Texas. While encamped on the bank of the swollen Mississippi River, they added the "W" to KERBO, marking their descendents. These Jackson County residents? arrived in Red River County, Texas and lived in the towns of Paris, Clarksville, Cooper, Enloe.
I have personal recollections of George Edward WILLIAMS and Lula KERBOW WILLIAMS from my boyhood. Lula (grandmother) told me that her father (Francis Marion) had served in the Confederacy. I have been advised by an e-mail friend that there exists references to the following names in the 16th Georgia Infantry and Cavalry: Dock KIRBO in Reynolds Company, Company B, 16th Georgia Volunteer Infantry, and John and Marshall KERBO in Camp's Company, Company D, 16th Georgia Cavalry. Dock and John, I recognize from the above. There is a Green Marshall KERBOW on the Confederate Pension rolls from Texas. I am not certain where he fits into the family, though he may be the brother of Francis, John, and Dock..
Francis Marion KERBO is said to have been born near Hoschton. What is the relationship of Mary HOSCH to the town of Hoschton, or its founders?
Thank you for your time.

LEE, McGOWEN, TOWNSEND Becky 11 Feb 1997
John LEE and Dorcus McGOWEN LEE died before 1850 leaving 6 young children with only one child's name known William M. Lee. John and Dorcus married in Clark County, Georgia in 1824 and William was born in April 1826. William left a family Bible, but no facts except those above were given about his parents. Bible records say that William married a Martha TOWNSEND on May 10, 1853 (where were they married??). They had 2 children: William Daniel Mathalone born June 27, 1854, and Dorcus Charlotte LEE born November 16, 1856. William Daniel is thought to have died young. Dorcus Charlotte married (Who and where?) and move (according to William's pension records.) to La.? There are letters addressed to "Dear Walter" (her half-brother) from "Sis" with stamped return address Acradia, La. Was this where she married??
William M. LEE volunteered for the war in 1862 in Pulaski County, Georgia in Hawkinsville--Why there?? Did he have family there? William married Oliff PRIDGEON in 1865 in Clarke County, Georgia. They were listed on the 1870 and 1880 Oconcee County, Georgia census, but none of William's first two children were listed living with them. None of William's family was found on the 1860 Georgia census either. Dorcus would have been 16 years old at this time and should have been listed somewhere as Docrus or Charlotte LEE on a Georgia census record unless she had already married, but she is not listed anywhere with either name on any LDS records or other known records.
If there is anyone who can help find the ancestors of either John or Dorcus please let me know. Also who his daughter Charlotte Dorcus married.
Thank you.
Becky

MILLER Doyle Baker 1 Aug 1997
Dear gracious friend,
I have a gg grandfather Micajah MILLER who is listed on the 1830 Jackson County Census. He married Polly GARRARD in Jackson County, Georgia on December 12, 1826. He moved to Marshall County, Alabama by 1850 and on to Tuscaloosa County, Alabama by 1870. He married a second time in Tuscaloosa County to Celia McMILLAN. Celia's parents were from Jackson County also, and were associated with the KERBOW's.
In the 1830 Jackson County Census, there was a Charles, Ebenezer, James, William, and William P. MILLER. Micajah MILLER could have been related to these.
If you have a surname folder at the library on MILLER's, I would appreciate anything on MILLER's from that time period, or any contacts or suggestions.
Respectively,

STREETMAN, STRICKLAND Will Smith 20 Mar 1997
I need information on the STREETMAN family in the Madison/Jackson County area between 1796-1850. My STREETMAN's were in Mississippi by 1850, in Itawamba County.
I believe the following were brothers: Jasper, Jehu B., John, Martin, and Williamson. Jehu B. STREETMAN was in Tishomingo County, Mississippi by 1860. He married Mary "Polly" STRICKLAND in 1826 in either Jackson or Madison County, Georgia. Williamson was in Itawamba County, Mississippi by 1850. His son, John R. STREETMAN, married Elizabeth CLAY in Itawamba County in 1849, and they were in Tishomingo County, Mississippi by 1880. So, I think all of them were closely related. Martin STREETMAN married Martha KEMP in Tishomingo County about 1853-55.
Hope you know someone who may be working on this family. I really appreciate your help. Thank you.

STONEHAM Raymond Stoneham 30 May 1997
My 3rd great grandfather, Henry John STONEHAM died 17 January 1815. The death notice was published in the Athens Georgia Gazette on 19 January 1815: "Henry Stoneham--52 yrs. died January 17, 1815, at his residence in Jackson County, soldier of the Revolution. Wife and 15 children survive him."
In a book titled Georgia Revolutionary War Soldiers' Graves, compiled by H. Ross Arnold, Jr. & H. Clifton Burnham, Henry Stoneham is shown as dying 1/18/1815 and being buried between Jefferson and Pendergrass (pages 366-367). References were shown as follows: Georgia's Roster of the Revolution, page 317 Gone to Georgia, page 86 Roster of Revolutionary Soldiers in Georgia, page 161.
If anyone will provide me with a listing of cemeteries in this area I will be very appreciative. Better yet, location of the cemetery or grave site would be great.
Old family stories indicate that from 20 June 1812 till 1813 Henry John STONEHAM was a Lt. in the 254th District Company of Jackson County, Georgia Militia.
I am searching for information about this unit during this time period. Particularily, I would like to know the area of this unit's jurisdiction. Also, any active duty actions wherein the unit participated.

STRICKLAND Jack Phillips 6 Jan 1997
While looking for others (McMullens, Randolphs, Olivers, Kerbows) just thought I would swing back to my STRICKLAND line and see if anything is out there now. My ancestor, Lloyd STRICKLAND (1807-1880's) stated that he was born and raised in Jackson County, Georgia. He seems to have migrated to Troup County, Georgia, where he married Eliza HOLMES in 1837. By 1850 he and other STRICKLAND's had moved to Randolph County, Alabama. (Calvin, Horatio Julious. I'll have to go to records for other names), and shortly before the Civil War he moved to Tuscaloosa County, Alabama. A general belief is that Calvin and Horatio were probably his brothers.
I have gathered some information on the STRICKLAND's, however I have not yet placed
them in any one particular Strickland family in Jackson County, Georgia, in 1810. Any help
would be appreciated and I would be happy to share.

VICKERY, PEEK, REYNOLDS Andrew Vickery Apr 5 1997
Any information on Thomas J. VICKERY, son of Aaron VICKERY. Thomas was born 1820 -died in 1890's, possibly in Jackson County, Georgia. He first married Winnie PEEK who died in 1879, then married Nancy Caroline REYNOLDS, daughter of Washington and Harriet Reynolds in August of 1879. There were 2 known children, Andrew in 1885 and Hattie in 1888. Possibly a 3rd child, Jack. As a child, I remember my grandfather talking about his brother Jack dying as a young boy. I would like any information on where and when Thomas and Jack died and where they are buried.
I know Nancy Caroline is buried at Cedar Creek in Hart County. I found several references to this family in the Hartwell Sun newspapers on microfilm at the library. The last thing I found referred to T. J. VICKERY and family of Jackson County visiting relatives at Cedar Creek in 1894. Any information on any of these family members would be greatly appreciated.
