Located in the Old Jail behind the Lamar County Courthouse inBarnesville, the Museum is filled with artifacts from the past.   The Museum also has for purchase 'The History of Lamar County 1825 - 1932' at a cost of $25 (plus shipping and handling).  No matter what facet of life or time you are looking at, there is something for everyone.   If you are a genealogist with roots in the Lamar County area, you have hit the Mother Lode!

Some of the valuable collections and resources on location are abstracts of census records, original newspapers, obituaries, and probate records for the Lamar, Monroe and Pike County areas.   The Museum also has many personal histories, photos, and just odds and ends that will get your genealogical blood racing!   Director Shanna English is more than happy to assist people with general look-ups via email or snail mail; all she asks in return is a donation to the Old Jail Museum and Archives.   Trust me, this is a small price to pay for the great wealth of material on hand.

The Museum is also looking for any kind of material from the Lamar and surrounding areas.  On hand now are old uniforms, dresses and other household items.  There is also a room dedicated to the Firefighters of Lamar County.  The Old Crowder Brothers Scale House contains a collection of buggies from the various factories that once surrounded the area.  Keep the Museum in mind and don't forget about the genealogical info that you have collected over the years.  The museum keeps a very large data base of genealogical and historical information and adds to it regularly.   You never know what cousins might find you there.

So send an e-mail and say "hi."   Shanna would love to hear from you!
