Lanier County, Georgia
History
Created by an Act of the Georgia
State Legislature in 1920 Lanier County, Georgia was created from the parent
counties Lowndes, Berrien and Clinch. It is named for Georgia Poet, Sidney
Lanier. The county is composed of 167 square miles. There are two towns in the
county, Lakeland, which is the county seat and
Stockton.
Lakeland was first known
as Alapaha Station and later as Milltown. Banks Lake
is now owned by the United
States Government, but years ago the lake
generated power for mills. Settlers came to get their corn grounded into grits,
meal and flour. This led to the Milltown name which later was changed to Lakeland.
U.S.
Census reports are available for this county for 1920. The Probate Judge has
marriage, probate, birth and some death records.
County Clerk
has divorce records from 1920, Civil
Court, Indian, and Criminal records from 1919.
