This site is dedicated to the pioneer families who settled in beautiful Lincoln County and called it home. The purpose of The GaGenWeb site  is to assist genealogy researchers in finding information about their Lincoln County ancestors. The GAGenWeb's parent project, the USGenWeb Project, consists of a group of volunteers working together to provide Internet websites for genealogical research in every county and every state of the United States. The Project is non-commercial and fully committed to free access for everyone.

My thanks to the previous County Coordinators for their outstanding work, and permission to retain what they achieved. I will continue to build on their work. Lincoln County is located in the Northeast area of Georgia and borders the Savannah River and Clark's Hill Lake. Our neighboring counties are Elbert, McDuffie , the GaGenWeb Wikes County site, Wilkes (Keith Giddeon's site) and Wilkes (Tom Hammack's site), and Columbia, GA, and McCormick County, SC. As McCormick Co., SC was not formed until 1912, Abbeville and Edgefield Counties of SC may also be of interest.  Lincoln County was carved out of Wilkes County in 1796 and named for Major General Benjamin Lincoln, Revolutionary War hero who commanded the Battle of Savannah.

Major General Benjamin Lincoln 24 January 1733 - 9 May 1810  Burial: Old Ship Church Cemetery Hingham, Plymouth County Massachusetts, USA Major General Benjamin Lincoln was a Revolutionary War Continental Army Major General who served with distinction in the Northern battles of Bennington and Saratoga. He was made commander of the Charleston, South Carolina defenses in 1788.  He allowed the British to box him in the city, which he surrendered after the siege (1780). Exchanged, he joined Washington's army in time to participate in Cornwallis' defeat at Yorktown. As Washington's second in command, he accepted the British surrender from Cornwallis' second in Command, Brig. Gen. Charles O'Hara (Cornwallis was ill and did not personally surrender). He served as Secretary of War of the Continental Congress from 1781-1783. A myth arose that Washington spurned O'Hara's surrender sword, and directed it to General Lincoln because Cornwallis forced Lincoln to surrender Charleston. The truth is the military protocol of the time directed officers of equal rank to deal with one another. Since Washington was higher in rank to O'Hara, protocol dictated the General Lincoln accept the surrender. Biography by Russ Dodge of FindAGrave.com

In the days before white man came, the area was inhabited by the Cherokee and  Creek Indians. Pioneers, having heard about the beauty and the excellent resources, began to move into the territory as early as 1750. The tribes ceded the land to the United States in 1773 when Wilkes County was formed. There were conflicts between settlers and Indians until 1774 when a peace treaty was signed. Lincoln County Marriages in McCormick County, SC  This list includes marriages of Georgians of Wilkes County, Elbert County, Lincoln County, Richmond County.  The large number of Georgians being married at this time in SC was due to (1) no waiting period (2) no required blood test.
Lincoln County Church Index
If you would like your church listed here, please send me a picture and history of the church. We now have the minutes posted for Goshen Baptist Church from 1802-1869 and later. Also, through the gracious generosity of Brenda Perkins, we have a copy of the deed of gift for the land on which Goshen Meeting House was built. The land was presented July 16, 1816 by Samuel and Nancy Davis.
