DENNIS / SWORDS / POSEY
David
Dennis 10 Oct 1998
I am researching Jesse DENNIS who m. Tabitha POSEY
in Lincoln Co, in 1818. The only POSEY I find in Lincoln
is James but she would seem to be dau. of Francis, Sr. as
she is named in wives / mothers estate, could she have been living with
a bro.? Jesse DENNIS's father is said to be Jacob DENNIS
but I have no proof. The Tax Digest's show a Jacob, William
and Samuel DENNIS all old enough to have been his father. Also Jesse
came of age (age 21) in 1820 and was shown on the census and tax digest
for that year only, availible info suggests he had gone to AL. A
Hiram DENNIS and 2 Alllen's came of age about the same time.
The tax records show 2 Allen DENNIS's, one a son of William
and one a son of Samuel. William DENNIS left estate records
but it appears he died in debt and so there is no record of heirs. As to
the SWORDS line the families appear to be
closely related but I have no proof. The Jacob DENNIS mentioned
is said to have m. Elizabeth SWORDS and that seems to be true from
what little I have, mostly that a possible gson was named James Swords
JONES. Having exhausted what I can find on these surnames I am about
to start researching their neighbors in hopes of finding some clues. I
am interested in hearing from researchers with possilble connectons to
any of these.

HARPER This was shared by
Lee
Nelson in the hopes of helping somebody
The following isn't a query, but rather a clue for researching
the HARPERs of Lincoln Co. GA: In Ruth Dryden's book: "Land
Records of Somerset Co. MD", on page 332, regarding the land lot
known as Pimore, the following entry is found: "23-Nov-1805, John
HARPER, William HARPER, Robert HARPER, Averilla HARPER, all of Lincoln
Co. GA sold to Isaac Riggen ..." For anyone searching the HARPERs
of Lincoln Co., this could be a clue to where they came from.
The Headrights Land Grants brought people into GA
from all over the eastern seaboard, from as far north as PA (that
I've found) and probably even further. Many of the names I see in early
tax lists from Wilkes, Greene, Hancock, Washington and other GA
counties are the same ones that I see in Somerset, MD in earlier
Tax Lists and other records.
Hope this helps. Lee Nelson

TURNER
Janice
Butler Turner 3/9/98
Shadrack TURNER was a representative
from Lincoln Co to the GA State Legislature in 1843-44. He
died in 1844 and was buried on an acre of land somewhere off the Augusta
road (highway 47), on the left heading north as you cross the
Dry Fork of Soap Creek. I can't believe there is not a marker
on that grave which is lost in that area. He had 700+ acres in that area.
We know there was a family cemetery since the acre containing his grave
was cut out of a tract of land when it was sold. Would anyone who might
have info about a lost graveyard in that region please contact me.
