Henry Barton was born in South Carolina in 1793. He was
married Jan. 7, 1816 in Jackson Co., GA to Mary (Polly)
Thomason (daughter of John Thomason and Hannah Abercrombie).
In a letter written by Indian Agent Hugh Montgomery and
received July 1817 by Governor William Rabun, he lists the
names of white heads of families found living on Cherokee
lands adjacent to Jackson County. Included are Henry Barten,
Holly Barten(widow), James Abercrombie, Senr and Junr. Hall
County was created in 1818. On the 1820 census, the following
heads of households are found living close together in Hall
County: Henry Barton (26-45 with 2 daughters), Holly Barton
(over 45 with 7 children), John Thomason and 2 James
Abercrombies. It has been speculated that Henry's mother is
Holly Barton. In 1822, Henry Barton purchased Lot #3 in the
11th District in Hall County, where he lived the rest of his
life. He was a member of Wahoo Baptist Church located just
north of his home across the Lumpkin Co. line. Henry and
Polly were the parents of 11 (possibly 12 children) before
she died in 1840 (or 1842). Henry remarried to Mary Gambling
in 1843 and they had one son - Reuben Wesley Barton. It is
possible that Mary died, and Henry married again in 1850.
A marriage license in Lumpkin County shows a marriage for
Henry Barton to Nancy Wood in 1850. The 1850 census shows
his wife's name as "N". The 1860 census shows his wife's
name as Nancy. However, the 1870 census and Henry's probate
records after 1871 give his wife's name as Mary.
