Vines Collier's Bible Records
Contributed by Vaughn Ballard  <vballard@airmail.net> June 5, 2004

A NOTE FROM MR. BALLARD--
I started out to copy a hand lettered chart that may be of interest to Oglethorpe Researchers. In the process of copying the chart, created by a lawyer and Justice of the Alabama Supreme Court, I began to question a few things. I've included some of those questions here. I almost chucked the whole idea but as Uncle Rele might have said, "Here tis and Caveat Emptor."
I’m enclosing a photo of the hand drawn chart

VINES COLLIER'S BIBLE RECORDS
A.A. Evans, a great grandson of Vines Collier produced a hand drawn chart in (or after) 1898. In 1985 I received a Xerox copy of most of the chart from Aurelius Augustus Evan's niece, Frances Evans Walker, who wrote, "Uncle Rele was a lawyer with A.B., honorary A.M. and also L.L.B. degrees  from U. of Ala.  He was also a member of Ala.  Supreme Court."
The most interesting part of the chart to me is at the bottom of the chart. There is a hand copy of what purports to be a copy of Vines Collier's Bible Records. Mr. Evans states:
"The records given below made by me A.A. Evans Sr. this 16th day Nov 1898 is an exact copy of the original record made by my great grandfather Vines Collier in his family Bible, the family record leaf of which is now in my possession."
Unfortunately, this statement is not correct. The records shown contains information that did not exist in 1898. There is a mention of "Robert Marshall Collier II, who died in Atlanta Oct. 1924."  He also states: "These marriage records from Va. Soldiers of 1776, Burgess."
That book was published in 1927  The chart must have been created after June 1927 since it contains a note about Celestia Victoria Waddell's death on that date.
Another point that bothers me a bit is the form of the birth records. For each entry, the first item is the number followed by the child's name. There are no middle names or initials and Polley (or Mollie) is used instead of Mary. The birth date is shown as:  b. day of week, day of month (9th etc.), Month and year. In one case the day of the month is omitted and one case the day of the week is not shown. The births cover a period of about 26 years. The bible records I have seen are in several different hands and with different ways of listing dates.
Perhaps Vines obtained a new bible and the info was copied from other sources all at the same time. It would have been nice if Vines Collier and Sarah Elizabeth Williamson's names and birth dates had been copied also.
That said, there is lots of true info about Vines Collier's family and maybe some that is wrong. But there are clues that may lead to the facts so "Here tis and Caveat Emptor."
