The Glenn Surname
DNA Project

To join our study, please follow these 5 steps

1

Order your DNA Test Kit from the Glenn Project Join Page at Family Tree DNA.  This link is for the Glenn Surname Project only and allows you order your kit at our group discount rate.

2

Choose either the Y-DNA12, Y-DNA25, Y-DNA37 or Y-DNA59 Marker Test (for an explanation of these tests,
see below).

3

Follow the directions on the kit and return the sample to Family Tree DNA.  You will receive your results in about seven weeks.  The results will be posted on the Glenn Surname DNA Project website for comparison with other participants.  Your results will be identified by ID number only, noting your earliest known Glenn ancestor, unless you wish to provide additional information (see step 5).

4

Email the project administrator a descendancy chart, beginning with your earliest known Glenn ancestor and ending with yourself.  For each generation, include (if known):

      * Name
      * Date and place of birth (or earliest known location)
      * Date and place of death
      * Name of Spouse(s)
      * Migration info for this individual (eg; VA>NC>GA)
      * Personal information about yourself and any living individuals will not be shared.

This information will be used to group related branches together on the results chart.

5

Decide what type of information you would like to share on this website, and notify the project administrator.  By default, only your ID Number and Earliest Known Glenn Ancestor will be published.  You may wish to include your name and/or email address, so other members of the study can contact you.  You may also wish to publish all or part of your descendancy chart, for comparison to other lines.  (Published descendancy charts will not include living individuals.)

If you have any questions, please contact Christopher Glenn or Jeanne Arguelles

12-Marker, 25-Marker, 37-Marker, 59-Marker Tests

Each of these tests will prove the same basic question: are two individuals related?  However, the question of WHEN can be answered with more precision when a greater number of markers are tested.  For example, if two individuals have a match with 12 markers, there is a 50% likelihood that the Most Recent Common Ancestor falls within 14.5 generations, and a 90% likelihood of 48 generations.  With the 25-Marker Test, the 50% likelihood drops to 7 generations and the 90% likelihood drops to 19.8 generations.   This information is explained in much greater detail at the Family Tree DNA website; be sure to check out the markers chart.

While we feel that the 25-Marker or 37-Marker Test is more valuable for our particular study, the choice is up to you.  Because the University of Arizona (the laboratory used by Family Tree DNA) keeps the DNA on file in a locked refrigerator, if you decide to start with a 12-marker test, you may upgrade your test at any time in the future.

12 Marker Y-DNA Test     $99   + postage
25 Marker Y-DNA Test     $148 + postage
37 Marker Y-DNA Test     $189 + postage
59 Marker Y-DNA Test     $269 + postage

You will notice on the order page that there are several other tests available, including the mtDNA test and combination Y-DNA/mtDNA packages.  These tests are not required for our study, although you are welcome to order these tests through the Glenn DNA Study.  You can read more about the various tests available at the FamilyTreeDNA website.
