Understanding the Results

ID# - Every participant is represented by an ID number.   Clicking on an ID number will lead you to information on that participant's earliest know Glenn ancestor, and may allow you to view additional information about the participant (name, e-mail address or pedigree chart), depending on how much information the participant has chosen to share.

Markers - These are the numbers across the top of the results table (e.g. 393, 385a), and refer to the Locus, or specific location a gene occupies on a chromosome.  The markers in red have shown a faster mutation rate than the average, which is helpful when comparing results.

Alleles - These values are the actual test results.   An allele is determined for every marker in the test (which can be 12, 25, 37 or 59 markers, depending on which test the participant selected). Alleles are what must be compared among participants to see if a match is possible.

Haplo - The Haplogroup refers to a person's ancient ancestral origins.  Anthropologists have developed a "human family tree" with branches originating in or migrating to various parts of the world.  Branches are identified by letter/number codes, such as R1b, I, J2, etc.  Haplogroups represented in the Glenn study thus far include the following:

R1 -     Quite rare. Found in low frequencies in Europe, Central Asia and South Asia.
R1b1 - Originated in Europe after the last ice age; most common European haplogroup.
I -        Originated in Northwestern Europe; common in Viking populations.
I1b -    Common in  Balkan populations.
E3b -   Originated in the Middle East, expanded into the Mediterranean & Southern Europe.

Color Coding - The results for participants who have a genetic match are displayed with the same color.  Results are considered a match if they have at least 11/12 matching markers (for the 12-marker test); at least 23/25 matching markers (for the 25-marker test); or at least 33/37 matching markers (for the 37-marker test).

Comparing Results - When comparing individuals who are not identically matched, the degree of the mismatch is referred to as Genetic Distance.   The Genetic Distance is used to determine the likelihood that two individuals are related, and how many generations ago they had a common ancestor.  For more information on Genetic Distance and probability of relatedness, follow the links below:
