Land Lotteries |
Between 1805 and 1832, Georgia used a lottery system to distribute land acquired from the
Creek and Cherokee Indians. Eligible residents could register in their county of
residence to draw lots in the newly formed counties. Fortunate drawers could then
take out a grant on the lot they drew. Lotteries took place in 1805, 1807, 1820,
1821, 1827 and 1832.

Tax Records for Oglethorpe County are available for the years 1795-1866. They can be
viewed on microfilm at the Georgia Department of Archives and History in Atlanta, and
through the LDS
Family History Library system. |

| Oglethorpe County Land Grants |
Many settlers received Headright and Bounty Grants from the
State of Georgia. The process of obtaining a grant began with the settler making an entry,
or claim, to a government-owned parcel of land. He could then be issued a warrant
(see example),
or permission to have a specified number of acres surveyed. The survey, or
plat, outlined the precise boundaries of the property. Finally, a grant was issued,
transferring ownership of the land to the claimholder.
These grants were recorded in Grant Books which are housed at the Georgia Department of
Archives and History in Atlanta (GDAH).
They can also be ordered on microfilm through the LDS Family History Library.
Grant records typically include the name of the grantee, the date, the number of acres,
and the county in which the land was granted. They do not include names
of family members, previous residences of the grantee, or reference to military service.
However, grants can be useful in placing an ancestor in a county at a spcific time,
and can be used in conjunction with deed records
to trace an ancestors' landownership history in the county. |

This index includes land grants that were issued in Oglethorpe County
after its creation in 1793. Please note that many grants were issued in
Wilkes County before 1793 in the area that would eventually become
Oglethorpe County. Those grants are not included in the index below.
