Elijah Peters Revolutionary Pension Application Georgia Oglethorpe County In the Superior Court – Sept Term 1818 Elijah Peters came personally before me & made oath that some time in the Spring of the year 1776 he enlisted himself at near the Fish dam ford on Broad River in South Carolina into Captain Robert Goodwin’s company in Col. Thompson’s regiment, which this deponent understood & believes was on the Continental establishment & formed part of the South Carolina line of regular troops – that he enlisted only for six months but served nine months in consequence of an expedition being about to be undertaken against the common enemy which detained him three months longer, when he was discharged at Charleston ----- ------, which discharge he has lost by losing his pocket book. That afterward, at Altamaha River in Georgia, this deponent enlisted under Colonel William McIntosh (who was acting as Captain when this deponent enlisted) in a troop of horsmen or dragoons, which troop belonged to the regiment or battalion but usually called a regiment of dragoons commanded when this deponent enlisted by Col. Lachlan McIntosh, afterwards Genl. Lachlan McIntosh. That whether Lachlan McIntosh belonged to the dragoons or not he does not know, but this deponent obeyed him as a commanding officer. That after his enlistment, this regiment of horse was commanded by Col. John Baker. That in this troop this deponent performed thirteen months service & was discharged at Midway settlement in Liberty County in Georgia in some part of the year 1778. That he received a discharge signed by Col. Baker, but also lost that discharge in his pocket book. This deponent saith he is now old, infirm, decreped & blind & is so reduced in his circumstances as to require the aid of his country for his support. That his ----- ------ is apparent to every one, & he has even applied to the county for a support from the poor funds. Elijah (x) Peters Sworn to this 11th Sept 1818 Georgia I, John McDooly, Judge of the Superior court of the Western district of said State, do certify that sufficient evidence has been offered now upon the oath of Elijah Peters, ---- that the said Elijah did serve against the common enemy during the Revolutionary war upon the Continental establishment for at least nine months, ----ingly as stated in the annexed affidavit, & that the said Elijah is in such reduced circumstances as to stand in need of the aid of the country for a support. Given under my hand & seal this 16th September 1818 Georgia I, Isaac Collier, clerk of the Superior court of said county, do certify that
the foregoing proceedings were held in open court before the Honorable John McDooly Judge
