"JUDGE HIGHTOWER. (A Short Sketch of the Ended Life of a Good Citizen) -- From the Cedartown Standard, May 1892.

Brief mention was made in The Standard last week of the death of one of Polk's oldest and best citizens, Judge Elias D. Hightower. His death occurred last Wednesday night at the home of his daughter, Mrs. E. C. Carter, and the funeral was held on Friday. A large delegation from Caledonia Lodge, F. and A.M., left Cedartown early in the morning and escorted the remains from the home of Mr. Carter to the family cemetery near Hightower Falls, where they were joined by the Rockmart Lodge, of which the deceased was an honored member. The remains were there interred with impressive Masonic ceremonies.

Elias D. Hightower was born in Green County, September 13, 1808, and was the oldest of eight children, all of whom he survived. He was married in 1831 to Miss Mary A. Peek, who preceded him to the better world five years ago. To this union were born eleven children, all of whom are living but two. There are 56 grandchildren and 26 great-grandchildren. Mr. Hightower moved to Polk County, in 1846, and has ever since been one of our most honored citizens. He ably represented this county in the State legislature in 1872-73.

He was a devoted member of the Methodist Church for fifty years, and often spoke of his approaching end, saying that he was ready to go. Five of his children live in Polk - messrs. J. D. and D.N. Hightower, Mrs. Martha A. Carter, Mrs. Sarah R. Johnson and Mrs. Belle Gresham; two are in Texas - messrs. William H. and Vinson M. Hightower; Mr. T. M. Hightower lives in Alabama and Mrs. Lizzie Moore in Tennessee.

Mr. Hightower was not only a Master Mason, but was also a member of Adoniram Chapter, R.A.M., in Cedartown, and stood high in the councils of that order. For over four-score-years he has walked an upright, blameless life, and at the age of 83 years, 7 months and 21 days bid farewell to life and went to his reward."
