How Do I Join the SUVCW?
The Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War is a patriotic and educational organization, similar to the Grand Army of the Republic. It was founded on November 12, 1881 and incorporated by Act of Congress August 20, 1954. The Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War is the legal heir to and representative of the Grand Army of the Republic.
Any and all questions regarding Membership in the Department of Georgia & South Carolina, Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War, should be directed to the Department Junior Vice Commander.
Types of Membership
Hereditary Membership. Eligibility in the Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War is open to male descendants (sons, grandsons, great-grandsons, nephews, grand nephews, great grand nephews, etc.) of Soldiers, Sailors, or Marines who were regularly mustered into Federal Service and served honorably in, or were honorably discharged from, or died in the service of the Army or Navy of the United Stated during the War of the Rebellion, 1861-1865. Membership applicants must be at least fourteen (14) years of age and must not have been convicted of any heinous or notorious crime (felony). In addition, the applicant and his ancestor(s), through whom eligibility is claimed, must not have voluntarily borne arms against the Government of the United States. Junior membership is available for male descendants between the ages of six (6) to fourteen (14), with the same stipulations as stated above.
Associate Membership. Men who do not have the ancestry to qualify for hereditary membership, but who demonstrate a genuine interest in the War of the Rebellion, and who can subscribe to the purposes and objects of the Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War may become Associates. An Associate may vote and hold any office except that of Commander-in-Chief. Associates may not exceed one-third of the total membership of the camp at the time of election.
How Do I Apply?
Finding a Camp. Once you have reviewed the above and decided to join the Order, the first step is to determine if there is a Camp in your respective area. A listing of the Camp's of this Department can be found on this site under the "Camp's of the Department" section. Once you have found a Camp that you would like to join you will need to contact that Camp's Junior Vice Commander, who will then assist you in the application process.However, if you are unable to find a camp in your area, the Department does have a Membership-At-Large, to find out more about that program please contact the Department Junior Vice Commander.
The Application. To join the Order a paper application with the necessary documentation of your ancestery must be completed and submitted to the Camp or Department to which you are wishing to join. The following link will take you to a PDF Application.
