In Memoriam
Among the sad events, which occasionally transpire and solemnize our feelings we notice the death of our aged and beloved sister, Nancy Jarrell whose spirit took its winged flight on the 5th of February.  Punctual in dealings, brave in duty and patient in affliction sister Jarrell was a useful member of the church and society and will be much missed among her relations and friends who seemed almost plunged into despair at the thought of giving up one whom they had known and loved so long with an unwavering attachment. It was with tender, affectionate and exalted marks of regard that the ladies of our community and in a manner that manifested appreciation of the noble and the good, and which seemed appreciated as the sweetest smiles seemed to respond and her corpse seemed almost to speak.  She was in the 77th year of her age. Her death occurred at a time when her family was poorly prepared to bear so great a shock as it was so soon after the painful death by fire of her little grandchild, a son of A.H. Jarrell.  Certainly the connection need and have the sympathy of their various friends to comfort them among so many of such scenes.  May the blessings of our Heavenly Father rest upon them and His spirit comfort and wisdom direct and strong arm protect the dear ones she has left behind, and may we all be prepared to peacefully lay us down to rest at last as she has done in the triumphs of a living faith and be enabled to experience the benefits of a happy reunion of our disembodied spirits and enjoy our long sought rest.  Rest! Sweet Rest! Oh, how we will enjoy our long sweet rest.

Died
One of the saddest deaths that has occurred in our county in several months was that of Mrs. Dora Shrimshire, which sad event occurred at her home near Elmira Mills, on Tuesday the 7th inst., after a short but painful illness.  She was the kind and affectionate daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Hiram Kimble and was married to Mr. James Shrimshire on Sunday the 15th of January by Rev. J.T. Adams, an account of which was given in the Herald, and at which time life to them seemed all of sunshine and happiness, but how sad the picture now – a loved one has gone, a chair is made vacant and many hearts are sad, but He that rules over all knows what is best.  She was a member of the Methodist church and tried to live up to the requirements of her church and enjoyed the blessings of her Lord.  She leaves a devoted husband, father, mother, brothers and sisters besides many kind friends to mourn their loss.  The funeral services were conducted on Wednesday by Rev. J.T. Mims, at which were gathered the largest assemblage of friends and relatives of any funeral service ever held in that section.  The husband, parents and loved ones have our sincere sympathy. Additional Comments: Note: Dora was married to James "Jim" Schrimshire, an older half-brother of my great-grandmother, Gussie Schrimshire Adams.  I would like to correspond with anyone researching the Schrimshire family.  I've found the name Schrimshire spelled many ways but I believe "Schrimshire" to be the correct spelling.  I have included this spelling for this obituary instead of the name, Shrimshire, which was used in the article.

Died
Mrs. Alice Bynum, wife of Claudius Bynum, deceased, and mother of Mr. T.J. Bynum, died at her home south of Reynolds on Tuesday the 21st Feb.  Mrs. Bynum was in the 80th year of her age, and had been a member of Bethel Baptist Church for many years.  She had lived a devoted life to the cause she professed and was loved by all who knew her.  Mrs. Bynum was in perfect health apparently, to within a few hours of her death and was able to discharge as usual, her domestic duties.  She had always lived an active life and was one of the most industrious ladies of the community in which she lived.  Her death was a great surprise to her family.  On Tuesday night after eating a hearty supper she complained of feeling unwell, and before assistance could be rendered she was a corpse.  Her remains were interred at Bethel on Wednesday, the funeral services being conducted by Mr. J.T. Ogburn.  She leaves a large family of children and many friends to mourn their loss.  The Herald extends its sympathy to the bereaved ones.

A Sad But Mysterious Find
One of the saddest incidents on record took place in Columbus on Tuesday the 10th inst.  Mr. J.P. Willis, son of Judge D.A.J. Willis, of this county, left his father’s home several years ago and engaged in business in Oglethorpe and other places.  He was a man who had been well raised and well educated, and at one time in life was not only a good businessman but a fine bookkeeper, and did well for a while.  He finally went to Columbus when he partook of the habit of intoxication.  Failing to get employment and having soon lost all hopes of success he sought the charity of the city.  He possessed a determined will and would not listen to the earnest entreaties of a father’s love, preferring rather the charity of the world.  On a cold winter night in February last he secreted himself in one of the back rooms on the third floor of the Webster building in Columbus and there it is supposed, froze to death.  He was missing from the city at this time why it is supposed he died in February.  The room he occupied had never been opened since last winter.  The proprietor of the building sent a servant to have the room swept out and opened up, when to his astonishment there lay the remains of Mr. Willis.  A coroner’s inquest recognition, but a deed to a lot of land in this county made to him by his father and other papers found in his pocket, proved his identity.  His remains were shipped to Howard on Wednesday and interred in the family burying ground, near Daviston on Thursday.

A big thanks goes out to Carla Miles for submitting this information!
