News From Rabbit
The community around Rabbit was deeply saddened last Friday, Jan. 22nd, by the
death of Mrs. Mary Hays.
Mrs. Hays has been in feeble health for several years and her death was not
unexpected. Her remains were buried at the Pine Level Cemetery Saturday, Jan.
23rd, by the side of her husband, Stephen W. Hays, who died Nov. 5, 1879, in the
presence of a large assembly of people. The funeral services were conducted by
Rev. C.B.G. Johnston in a very impressive manner. She leaves one son, Mr. Jim
Hays, and two daughters, Miss Mattie Hays, and Mrs.
Laura Hart, all of Rabbit, besides a host of relatives and friends to mourn
their loss. Mrs. Hays was about 76 years old, has been a consistent member of
the Methodist church since childhood. She was one of the few who constituted
the church at Pine Level nearly forty years ago. She did not take a very active
part in the work of the church, but her good influences were seen and felt in
her home by her children and their neighbors and friends. Her life was such as
bear evidence of a pure Christian woman. She bore her afflictions, which were
long continued, with patience which but few can do. No doubt she hated to leave
her loved ones but was ever ready to meet the call of her Master. “Truly she
was a good woman.” Her children have the sweet consolation that she is at
“Rest.”
