In Memoriam
Once more the “Grim Reaper, with sickle keen,” has visited and mowed down the prop around the loving hearts of a devoted family which had so affectionately twined. The subject of these lines, Mr. William G. Bateman, was born in Houston County, and when he reached manhood he moved to Butler, where he spent the remainder of his life, which took its flight July 1st.  Just before the sun shed its brilliant rays over this earth his soul immortal was in Paradise
surrounded by the eternal rays of an all wise and glorious God. He was 59 years old and his life has been well and nobly spent.  His demise has robbed his family of a model husband, father and brother, and the county of one of its best citizens, for he had so lived as to gain the love, confidence and esteem of every one who knew him. He was upright, honest and truthful in all his dealings with others.  He possessed one of the kindest, best hearts, that ever throbbed with munificent and tender emotion.  With him the golden rule was no theory but a practice. He was ever considerate of the faults of others, and to the poor and friendless he was always willing to aid in supplying their wants or assisting them in distress. As a husband, father and brother, his devotion was such as one would look for, from him whose life was so pure and good, and in whose heart was such depths of love and kindness. It is so hard to give up our loved ones and say “Thy will be done.”  It cannot be that earth is mans only abiding place.  We are born for a higher destiny than that of earth.  There is a realm where the rainbow never fades – where the stars will spread out before us like islands that slumber on the ocean, and where the beautiful things here pass before us like visions, will stay in our presence forever. Let us be resigned to God’s will, and live with a hope of meeting our departed loved one on the better world, where God will gather the broken links never more to be separated.  Then – “Let not our hearts rebel, God gave – He took – He will restore; He doeth all things well.”
A Loving Niece
So beautiful and appropriate are the above lines taken from the Fort Valley Leader, that we take pleasure in publishing them in our columns in memory of our deceased friend.

Dear little Charlie, infant son of Mr. and Mrs. S.B. Montgomery, of Panhandle district, Taylor County, Ga., was born April the 29th 1890 and died July the 11th 1891.  Short as was his stay upon the earth he remained long enough to entwine his sweet little self in the affections of all who know him.  We laid him to rest on Sunday the 12th int., in the midst of a large crowd of sorrowing friends.  May his loved ones meet him in Heaven.

Died
Mr. J.A. (better known as Uncle Johnnie Chapman) died at his home in this county on Saturday the 11th inst., at 3 o’clock p.m., after a brief illness of only a few days from typhoid dysentery.  Mr. Chapman was in the 79th year of his age and was one of the best farmers as well as one of the best citizens of Taylor County.  He was a member of the Primitive Baptist Church, and tried to live in obedience with the teachings of the Bible.  He was a man of energy and perseverance and by close economy was in comfortable circumstance.  By his pleasant disposition and honest dealing he had not an enemy that we know of.  He leaves a devoted companion, six children and many friends to mourn their loss.  His remains were interred in the cemetery at Bethlehem church on Sunday evening at 3 o’clock, Elder Bennett Stewart conducting the funeral services.  A very large attendance was present at the service.

A big thanks goes out to Carla Miles for submitting this information!
