Died
Miss Julia McCants, daughter of Mr. J.G. McCants, died at the home of her
parents at 6 o’clock p.m. on Sunday last. She was taken seriously ill on
Thursday with fever and rapidly grew worse until relieved by the angel of death
as the sun sank in the west on Sunday evening. She was about 16 years of age
and was just entering young womanhood when called to be with the saints above.
She was one of the brightest, most affectionate, kind and loving hearts in the
community in which she lived; with her schoolmates she was a special favorite
and was loved by all who knew her. Many hearts are made sad at her death. The
funeral services took place at Union church of which she was a member on Monday
evening, conducted by Rev. J.T. Mims. The parents have the sincere sympathy of
many friends and relatives in their sad affliction. Additional Comments: Note:
There is a memorial article written about Julia McCants in the Oct. 31st issue
of the Herald on page three. The article was written by her pastor, J.M.
Boland, and states “Julia C. McCants was born March 29th, 1879. She was a
member of the church three years and a few days having joined my ministry in
September 1890. No one ever doubted her conversion, for she lived a beautiful
and consistent Christian life until she crossed over the river to rest under the
shade of the trees. She was raised a Christian – having been brought up in the
nurture and the admonition of the Lord.” *****Submitted by

Died
Our readers will be pained to learn of the death of Miss Mary Sturdivant,
which sad event occurred at her home in Butler about 1 o’clock, p.m., on Monday
the 9th inst. She had been in feeble health for several months, but her
death was very sudden and entirely unexpected even to her own family. She was a
life long member of the Methodist church, one of the oldest inhabitants of our
community, loved and respected by all who knew her. Too much cannot be said of
her Christian character, as she led a life in humble submission to the will of
her Master. The funeral services will take place today at 10 o’clock to be
conducted by Rev. J.T. Adams, and her remains will be interred in the cemetery
in Butler. She leaves a large number of friends and relatives to mourn their
loss who have the sympathy of this community in this their sad bereavement. The
deceased was about 60 years of age. *****Submitted by

Died
Mrs. Rebecca Howell, wife of Rev. John Howell, deceased, died at the
residence of Mr. J.D. Jarrell, in the northern portion of this county at 12
o’clock on Friday night last. Mrs. Howell was only sick a short while before
her
death but left the sweet assurance that she was ready for the Master’s call. She
was in the 73rd year of her age, for many years a consistent member of the
Missionary Baptist church and lived to bless the world through the religion
that she professed. She was a purely good woman and left to the world a
Christian character worthy to be emulated. She leaves several children among
them Mr. M.C. Howell and Mrs. J.D. Jarrell besides many friends and
acquaintances to mourn their loss. Her remains were interred at Antioch on
Sunday morning, surrounded by a large circle of sympathizing friends.

Obituary
Franklin A. Thompson, departed this life in Butler, Taylor County, Ga. at
the residence of his sister, Mrs. Fannie Collins, on Sunday morning the 29th of
Oct. The deceased was born in Taylor County, (then Marion) Nov. 12th
1857 and was therefore nearly forty-two years old at his death. He enjoyed
excellent health most of his life and was therefore cheerful and lively; but
moral and upright in his manners. He was a pupil in my school several terms and
had as many friends and as few enemies as any pupil in school, and always held
an honorable rank in all his classes, behaving himself with so much credit as to
escape rebuke or correction, being of very friendly and social turm.(?)
He grew up to manhood highly esteemed in the community in which he lived. I do
not mean to say that he was without faults, errors and weakness, for of course
he was not and I hope that he was caused to feel them experimentally, even that
he was a sinner, for the promise is to such – “I came not to call the righteous;
but sinners to repentance” – therefore I hope Gus was a sinner saved by grace,
for he expressed a resignation to death. Though he had not united with any
religious denomination, neither had the thief on the cross, yet the Savior heard
his prayer. His father died when he was quite small, and he and others were
left in the care of a mother. When about 25 years of age he sought employment
near Albany where he remained in lucrative business until taken with his last
sickness about three months previous to his death. He was confined to his bed
about two weeks bearing his affliction with great fortitude and patience. His
disease was bronchal affection. He leaves a mother, three brothers and three
sisters, many relatives and friends to mourn their loss. His remains were laid
to rest in the cemetery at Butler. Funeral
services conducted by Elder J.R. Respess.
