Mr.
Robert Frank Stahlkuppe, age 90, of Hiawassee, GA, passed away
Thursday,
December 27, 2007 at Chatuge Regional Hospital.
Frank was born Sunday, May 20, 1917 in Cherokee County, NC to
the late
Charles Bowers and the late Ella Josephine Hall Stahlkuppe. Frank Stahlkuppe was a son of the
mountains. He enjoyed hunting and
fishing, and he did a fair amount of trapping in his younger days, but
it was
his interest in firearms that would stay with him for the rest of his
life. Frank left the mountains of
western North Carolina in the late 1930’s and went into the trucking
business
in Jacksonville, FL. He remained in the
freight business for the remainder of his working days, working
primarily as a
traffic representative. He was in the
service during the latter part of World War II, reaching the rank of
sergeant
in the Quartermaster Corps. After the war, Frank and his wife, Rose,
eventually
settled in Atlanta, where he pursued his interest in firearms.
Frank and
Rose moved to Hiawassee in the early 1980’s.
There, Frank continued his gunsmithing work, a skill that can be
attested to by any number of hunters and shooters in the area, near and
far. Frank was also instrumental in
starting the Chatuge Gun Club, the Lake Chatuge Carp rodeo, and the
fishing
rodeo for youngsters.
In his
day, Frank Stahlkuppe was one of those gunsmiths who could make a rifle
from
the raw materials, everything but the action; and he probably could
have done
that if he had had the milling machine to do it with.
Those men, like Frank, who can do it all, and
do it well, are a diminishing number.
Frank Stahlkuppe was one of the Last of the Old Breed. Frank was preceded in death by his wife, Rose
Stahlkuppe in 1999.
Survivors
include: son, Dr. Robert and Cheryl Stahlkuppe of Hiawassee, GA;
daughter,
carol and Bob Moffit of Hiawassee, GA; daughter, Ellen Stahlkuppe of
Hiawassee,
GA; sister, Arralu Russell of Alpharetta, GA; grandson, Miles Moffit of
Athens,
GA, and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral
services were held Sunday, December 30, 2007 at 3 p.m. from the Chapel
of
Cochran Funeral Home with the Rev. Charlie Shelton officiating. Music was provided by his niece, Cheryl
Russell and Johnny and Jimmy Hogsed.
Interment was in the Brushy Creek Baptist Cemetery in Ocilla, GA.

Cochran Funeral Home of Hiawassee, GA is in charge of arrangements. You may send condolences to the family and
