Della Mae Griffith, 95, of Murphy, NC died Sunday, December 5, 2004, in a Murphy medical center.

A native of Towns County, GA, she lived in Cherokee County, NC for most of her life.  She was the daughter of the late Odell and Daisy Ramey Powell and the wife of the late Will Henson, who died in 1941, and the late Fred Griffith, who died in 1980.  She was a homemaker and an avid gardener.  Della Mae was a member of the Peachtree memorial Baptist Church.

Surviving are two sons, Doyle Henson, her longtime caregiver of the home, and Verlon Henson and his wife, Anna Ruth, of Johnson City, TN; three sisters, Fairleen Melton of Hiawassee, GA, Maudeen Bradley of Marietta, GA, and Betty Helton of Atlanta; a brother, Odell Powell Jr. of Copperhill, TN; a grandson, Perry Henson of Johnson City, TN; two great grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.

A funeral services was held in the Chapel of Ivie Funeral Home, Murphy with Dr. Chester Jones officiating.  Interment was in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens.  Pallbearers were Freddie Carson, Perry and Dustin Henson, and James, Jesse and Blake Melton.

mrs. gertrude edna miller

 

The Cochran Funeral Home of Hiawassee, GA announces the death of Mrs. Gertrude Edna Miller, age 79 of Young Harris, who passed away Friday, January 14, 2005 at Chatuge Regional Hospital.

Mrs. Miller was born November 3, 1925 in Woodbury, NJ, to William and Edna Hulmes.  She was a member of the Gem Society in Franklin, NC and Hayesville United Methodist Church.  Mrs. Miller was preceded in death by a son, Thomas Allen Miller and her husband, Arthur T. Miller.

Survivors include: daughter, Janice and Bill Cohron of Hayesville, daughter, Donna and Rick Headley of Hiawassee, son Fred Arthur and Amy Miller of Cape Coral, sister, Elaine Holberg of Cape Coral, six grandchildren, four great grandchildren.

A celebration of life service will be held Tuesday, January 25, 2005 at 6:30 p.m. at First United Methodist Church in Hayesville, NC.

In lieu of flowers please make memorial contributions to the American Cancer Society.

mrs. beulah mae swanson sampson

 

Mrs. Beulah Mae Swanson Sampson, age 91, of Young Harris passed away on Thursday, January 13, 2005 in the Union General Hospital following an extended illness.  Mrs. Sampson was born on April 19, 1913 in Towns County, the daughter of the late Edgar Swanson and the late Anna Parker Swanson.  She was a native and lifelong resident of Towns County.  She was preceded in death by her husband, Wymer G. Sampson, Sr. in 1998, a brother, Leon Swanson, two sisters, Lura Swanson Sampson and Gladys Richardson.  Mrs. Sampson was a member of Old Union Baptist Church.

Surviving Mrs. Sampson are one son and daughter-in-law, Wymer and Mattie Sampson of Blairsville; one daughter and son-in-law, Frances and Franklin Cook of Marietta; one sister, Pearl S. Carson of Marietta; five grandchildren, Connie Durham, Karen Taffs, Kathy Sampson, Phillip Sampson and Melissa Cook; five great grandchildren, one great great grandchild, many other relatives and friends also survive.

Funeral services were held on Saturday, January 15, 2005 at 2 p.m. from the Old Union Baptist Church with the Rev. Jimmy Hogsed and Rev. Jimmy Rogers officiating.  Special music was presented by the Old Union Church Choir.  The following gentlemen served as pallbearers: David Rogers, Phillip Sampson, Tony Durham, Clarence Collins, Bill Taffs and Jerry Sampson.  Interment followed in the church cemetery.

ms. mary bee penland

 

Ms. Mary Bee Penland, age 86, of Hayesville, NC, passed away Tuesday, January 11, 2005 at Clay County Care Center.

Ms. Penland was born November 21, 1918, in Towns County, GA to the late Ed and Eliza Garrett Penland.  She was a homemaker and was a member of Pine Grove Baptist Church in Hayesville, NC.

Survivors include: son, Bob Penland of Hoschton, GA; brother, Jewell Penland of Hayesville, NC; sisters, Lucretia Shook of Canton, GA and Ann Mountain of McDonough, GA; several nieces and nephews also survive.

Funeral services were held Thursday, January 13, 2005 at 1 p.m. from the Chapel of Cochran Funeral Home with Rev. Stanley Gibson officiating.  Music was by the Hunter Family.  Pallbearers were Michael Penland, Mike Bruce, Gene Penland, Dennis Penland, David Penland, Dale Penland and Dwight Penland.  Burial was in Philadelphia Baptist Church Cemetery.
