Myrlon H.
Carmean born April 15, 1923, passed away on January 12, 2008, following
a
valiant struggle with cancer. Hiawassee
became Myrlon’s home in 1982, when he and his wife, Frances, found
their much
loved land on a creek nearby. This
became the “Blueberry patch”, where many dear friendships grew out of
sharing
the fruits of their land with others. In
1990, they bought the cornfield next door and transformed it into
“Carmean’s
Woods”, planting several acres of trees, along with organic vegetable
and
flower gardens. “Merle” (aka “Chief” and
Blueberry”) was known for his good-natured teasing and his natural
inclination
to help people. He easily became
integrated into the community, including a stint as Fire Chief.
He began
life as a Native American from the Delaware Tribe, on a reservation in
Maryland. He developed many skills and
eventually joined the Navy as a Seaman.
It wasn’t long until he was designated Chief Torpedo Man on the
submarine “USS Drum” serving in the South Pacific during all of WWII. He continued to stay in touch through reunion
with his fellows from the Drum, who always showed great admiration for
Merle.
During
the mid-part of his life, he enjoyed living on the Banana River in
Florida,
working as a civilian instructor for the Army, in Cape Canaveral, where
he met
Frances, before moving to Hiawassee. He
lost Frances in 2003.
He has a
dear granddaughter, Pauline and her husband, along with 3 adored
great-grandchildren who all live in Florida.
His loving step-daughters, Paula and Bonnie Berkeley, and
Bonnie’s
husband Bill Smith, live in California.
His step-grandson, Alex Lambert, spent many happy summers with
merle
while growing up. The last chapter in
Merle’s life was spent with his devoted and loving companion, Clara
Louise
Card, by his side.
