MR. carlo culum russell

 

Mr. Carlos Culum Russell, age 88, of Hiawassee, GA passed away Wednesday, January 14, 2004 following a period of declining health.

Mr. Russell was born to James and Sarah Alice Russell on December 24, 1915 in Red Boiling Springs, Tennessee.  At the age of four his family moved to Custer, Oklahoma.

He spent three and one half years as Flight Engineer in the Air Force from 1942-1946.  He attended Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College in Tifton, Georgia and received his B.S.A. degree from Oklahoma A. & M. University (now Oklahoma State University) in Stillwater, Oklahoma in 1951.  He worked with Ag. Extension in Franklin County, Arkansas and in Union and Catoosa Counties, Georgia before coming to Towns County in 1958 as County Extension Director where he served until retirement in 1977.  He then worked part time for the U.S.D.A. Crop Reporting Service for approximately 15 years.

He was a member of the Hiawassee United Methodist Church, Towns County lions Club, Unicoy Lodge, No. 259 and Order of Eastern Star, Chapter No. 305.  He was a life member of Veterans of Foreign Wars, Garrett Owenby Post 7807.  He was awarded Life membership in the International Assoc. of Lions Clubs on September 1, 2000.

He was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, uncle and friend.  He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Miriam Lane Russell, daughter and son-in-law, Diann and Dennis Nichols, son and daughter-in-law, Jim and Joan Russell, former daughter-in-law, Dena Westbrooks, grandson and wife, Wade and Debbie Nichols, grandson, Aaron Russell, granddaughters and husbands, Katherine and Ulysses Bowman, Gentry and Yuri Henry, step-granddaughter, Nicole Anderson, nieces and nephews.

A memorial services was held on Sunday, January 18, 2004 at the Hiawassee United Methodist Church with the Rev. Les Connell and Rev. Ken Fuller officiating.  Burial was in at Laurel Hills Memory Gardens Cemetery in Young Harris, Georgia.

The family has suggested that memorial donations may be made to Towns County 4-H, P.O. Box 369, Hiawassee, GA for the Carlos Russell Scholarship Fund.

william o. dotson

 

William O. Dotson, of Flint, MI., age 72, died Tuesday, December 23, 2003 at Genesys Hospice Care Center in Goodrich.  A private service was held at the Swartz Funeral Home with Pastor John Thomason officiating.  Cremation took place following the service.

Mr. Dotson was born in Towns County, Georgia on September 20, 1931.  He married Golda Moss on July 3, 1956 in Towns County.  He served in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean war.  Mr. Dotson retired from the Chevrolet V-8 Plant and was a member of UAW Local 659.

Surviving are his wife, Golda; sons, Ed and Mike Dotson; daughter, Janet Dotson; grandchildren, Amanda, Chris, Tony, Aaron, Stacey and Lori; brothers, Frank, Carl, Harold, Charlie, Dwight, Dale and Carol; sister, Patricia and husband Troy Lovell.

martha louise moxley

 

Mrs. Martha Louise Moxley, age 59, of Hiawassee, GA., died, Monday, January 19, 2004 in Union General Hospital.

Mrs. Moxley was born to Frank C. and Myrtle (Dearing) White on October 24, 1944 in Fulton County, GA.  She has lived in this area for the past 12 years, coming here from the Atlanta area.  Mrs. Moxley was of the Church of God faith.

Survivors include: husband, Leon Strickland of Hiawassee, GA; mother, Myrtle White of Jonesboro, GA; daughter, Tracy Barnes of Hiawassee, GA; sons, Mark Moxley and Shon Moxley, both of Hiawassee, GA; brothers, Danny White of McDonald, GA., Jimmy White of Fayetteville, GA., and Larry White of Warren, GA; sisters, Helen Adamson of Forest Park, GA., Doris Brock of Gay, GA., and Debra Whitman of Stockbridge, GA; eight grandchildren and one great grandchild.

Funeral services were held on Thursday, January 22, 2004 at 2:30 pm from the Chapel of Cochran Funeral Home with Rev. Harold Dillard and Rev. David Watson officiating.  Music was by Hazel Dillard.  Pallbearers were Cody Crane, Kevin Ford, Brent Wilson, Tommy Dearing, Ronnie Adamson and Thomas Barnes.  Honorary Pallbearer was Mathew Corley.  Burial was in Laurel Hills Memory Gardens.

Cochran Funeral Home of Hiawassee, GA., was in charge of arrangements.
