mr. john oscar tillman smith

 

Mr. John Oscar Tillman Smith, age 87, of Hiawassee, GA, passed away February 9, 2005 at Lanier Park Hospital in Gainesville, GA after a long bout with Alzheimers.

Mr. Smith was born October 1, 1917 in Columbus, GA to the late George and Elizabeth Smith.  He was a veteran of the United States Army serving in the Army Tank Corp during World War II.  He was also a thirty Second Degree Mason.

He moved to Titusville, FL from Oxford, AL in 1960 to work at the Kennedy Space Center and retired from NASA in 1980, settling in Melbourne, FL.  He then moved to Hiawassee, GA in 1996.  He and his loving wife first met at an ROTA dance at Ft. McClelland, AL in 1938 and continued their shared love of ballroom dancing during their many years together, and most recently at the Hiawassee, GA and Hayesville, NC Senior Dances.

Survivors include his loving wife of 65 years, Anita Hughes Smith of the home, daughter Gwendolyn Adams of Oxford, AL; son and daughter-in-law, Ron and Judi Smith of Blairsville, GA; grandsons Wallce Adams of Oxford, AL and Gordon Adams, also of Oxford, AL; and 7 great-grandchildren; along with many other family and friends.  A private memorial service was held in the N.E. Georgia Mountains.  Memorial Park Funeral Home of Gainesville, GA was in charge of arrangements.

mr. willis (billy) garrett

 

Mr. Willis (Billy) Garrett, age 55, of Hiawassee, GA (formerly of Hayesville, NC) passed away on Friday, February 18, 2005 following a period of declining health.  He was born to the late William and Mae (Phillips) Garrett on August 30, 1949 in Towns County, GA.  He is survived by daughter and son-in-law, Jennifer and Brandon Hicks, of Hiawassee, GA; son, Brandon Garrett, of Hiawassee, GA; brother, Whelchel Garrett, of Blairsville, GA; sisters, Lela Mashburn and Elizabeth Mull both of Hiawassee, GA; sister, Isabelle Dyer, of Cornelia, GA; and a number of nieces and nephews also survive.  Funeral services were held from the chapel of Banister Funeral Home on Sunday, February 20, 2005 at 2 p.m. with the Rev. Alan Flowers officiating.  Music was provided by Bobby Ellis.  The following gentlemen served as pallbearers, Roger Garrett, Ronnie Garrett, Darren Mashburn, Austin Hamilton, Jimmy McCarter, and Ricky Bradshaw.  Honorary pallbearers were Johnny Garrett and Russell Mashburn.  Interment was in the Betha Bara cemetery in Hayesville, NC.  Banister Funeral Home of Hiawassee in charge of arrangements.

mrs. edna mae mcconnell

 

Mrs. Edna Mae McConnell, age 80, of Hiawassee, GA died Monday, February 14, 2005 in Chatuge Regional Nursing Home.

Mrs. McConnell was born September 13, 1924 in Clay County, North Carolina to Wiley and Arizona (Mann) Moody.  She was a member of Mt. Zion Baptist Church, and had worked as a CAN.  She was preceded in death by two sisters, Hazel Taylor and Frances Moody, four brothers, Harley Moody, Gilmer Moody, Dwight Moody and Danny Moody.

Survivors include: daughter, Carolyn & Royce Dyer of Blairsville, GA; son, Leon and Brenda McConnell of Clayton; son, Stanley and Kathy McConnell of Hayesville, NC; son, Randall and Jackie McConnell of Hiawassee, GA; sister, Thelma Noblet of Hiawassee, GA; sister, Ethelene Harkins of Cleveland, GA; brother, Kenny Moody of Hiawassee, GA; brother, Voyde Moody of Cumming, GA; brother, Ray Moody of Hiawassee, GA; 12 grandchildren; 13 great grandchildren.

Funeral services were held Wednesday, February 16, 2005 at 2 p.m. in Chapel of Cochran Funeral Home with Rev. Ronnie Coffee officiating.  Music was provided by the Mission Hill Singers. Pallbearers were Randy McConnell, Richard McConnell, Tim McConnell, Tony McConnell, Cody Young, Josh McConnell, Caleb Garrett and Kyle McConnell.  Burial was in the Burch Cemetery.

mr. james ross wheeler

 

Mr. James Ross Wheeler, age 66, of Hiawassee, GA passed away February 10, 2005 in Chatuge Regional Nursing Home.  He was born in Towns County, GA on April 26, 1938.  He is survived by one sister, Carrie Walls, of Hiawassee, GA; one niece, Mrs. Jean Wimpey, of Hayesville, NC; and one nephew, Mr. Jerry Walls, of Hiawassee, GA.  No services are planned at this time.  Banister Funeral Home of Hiawassee in charge of arrangements.
