           Lorena Barnard Phillips, age 87, of Young Harris, GA passed away Sunday, February 19, 2012 at her residence. She was a native of Towns County, GA and the daughter of the late J.E. and Mary Etta Wood Barnard. Lorena was a homemaker. She enjoyed gardening and reading. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband, D.E. Phillips; brothers, William Barnard, Leon Barnard and Edwin Barnard and sisters, Mildred West and Lucille Prather.

           She is survived by one son, Tommy Phillips and wife Karen of Young Harris, GA; one daughter, Judy Gribble and husband Gary of Chatsworth, GA; four grandchildren, David Gribble of Chatsworth, GA, Kim Boatwright of Dalton, GA, Amanda Holdaway of Hiawassee, GA and Monica Phillips of Marietta, GA; four great grandchildren, Lindsay Gribble, Whitney Gribble, Savannah Holdaway and Halen Holdaway; and several nieces and nephews.

           Funeral services were held at 2 PM, Wednesday, February 22 2012 at the Townson-Rose Funeral Home Chapel of Hayesville. Rev. Herbert Henderson officiated. Burial was in the Old Brasstown Baptist Church Cemetery;. Pallbearers were David Gribble, Jason Holdaway, Travis Boatwright and friends of the family.

           The family received friends from 6-8 PM, Tuesday, February 21, 2012 at the Townson-Rose Funeral Home Chapel of Hayesville.

tommy ray chastain

 

           Mr. Tommy Ray Chastain, age 60, of Crooked Creek Connector, Young Harris, passed away Friday, February 24, 2012 at his home following an extended illness. Tommy was born May 22, 2012 in Flint, MI. He had lived here for the past 45 years. He was a longtime employee of GA Boot. Tommy was a loving brother, son, and uncle, (his nieces and nephews were his children). He was preceded in death by his father, Hubert Chastain. Tommy was of the Baptist Faith.

           Survivors include his mom, Darlene Hughes of Young Harris, sisters, Bobbie and Hubert Land of Blairsville, Glenda and David Kuykendall of Young Harris, Brenda and Terry Weaver of Young Harris and Dianna and Michael Spivia of Blairsville, several nieces and nephews also survive.

           Services for Tommy were held at 5 p.m., Sunday, February 26, 2012 at Mountain View Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Harley Hunter officiating. Music was presented by the Old Liberty Choir. Interment followed in Old Union Baptist Cemetery. The family received friends at the funeral home on Sunday from 3 until 5 p.m. In lieu of flowers make memorials to Regency Hospice in Tommy’s memory.

freda puett collins

 

           Freda Puett Collins, age 85, of Young Harris, GA who passed away Sunday morning, February 19, 2012. She was born in Marietta, GA, on Sunday, October 24, 1926, daughter of the late Frank B. Puett and the late Lela Berrong Puett. Besides her parents, she had been preceded in death by a son, Michael Hooper, of Young Harris, GA; two brothers, Frank Puett, Jr., and Sidney Puett. Freda was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star.

           Surviving family members include a son, Stacy Collins, of Young Harris; two step-sons, Dwayne Collins, of Topsail Island, NC; and Wayne Collins, of Young Harris; three brothers, Dennis Puett and his wife Karen, of Marietta, GA; Merl "Bud" Puett and his wife Irene, of Young Harris; and Max Puett and his wife, Francis, of Blairsville; a sister, Dorothy Puett Sampson and her husband, Clarence Sampson, of Marietta; grandchildren: Blake Collins, of Young Harris; Crystal Engelskind, of Hayesville, NC; and Candace Reece of Marietta; great grandchildren: Zane Atha, of Athens, GA; Montana Engelskind and Bentley Engelskind, both of Hayesville; many nieces, nephews, and great nieces, and great nephews also survive.

           Funeral services for Freda were held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, February 22, 2012 from Old Brasstown Baptist Church with Rev. Jerry Helton & Rev. Tommy Jenkins officiating. Special music was presented by Sam Ensley. The following gentlemen served as pallbearers: Danny Brown, David Brown, Phillip Parramore, Melvin Silvey, Terry Plott, and Gene Henderson. Interment followed in the Old Brasstown Cemetery. The family received friends at the Cochran Funeral Home of Blairsville on Tuesday evening from 6 until 9 p.m.

loyal cecil shook

 

           Mr. Loyal Cecil Shook, age 72, of Airline Road, Young Harris passed away Monday, February 20, 2012 at Northeast Georgia Medical Center in Gainesville. He was born May 4, 1939 in Young Harris, GA. He was a member of Stephens Masonic Lodge #414 F&AM, the Odd Fellows and Shriners. He loved coon hunting and car racing. Loyal was a loving husband, father, brother and grandfather. He was was preceded in death by his mother, Cloie Allison Shook. Loyal was a member of West Union Baptist Church.

           Survivors include his wife of 47 years, Betty Shook, father, Arthur Shook, son Cecil (fiancé, April Townsend) Shook, sisters, Louise Henderson, Shirley and Hinse Hooper, all of Young Harris, Edith and Wayne Tanner of Blairsville, brothers, Loman Shook of Young Harris, Fred and Mildred Shook of Young Harris, Clyde and Sandra Shook of Young Harris, grandchildren, Ellic Paydon Shook, Ashton Blake Shook, Tyler West and Corbin Townsend.

           Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, February 22, 2012 at West Union Baptist Church with Michael Shook, Rev. Jay Lynch, Rev. Jerry Young and Rev. Jimmy Rogers officiating. Music was by the Troy Phillips family and Haley Gibson. Pallbearers were be Ricky Plott, Jeff Tanner, Larry Shook, Dexter Shook, Jerry Shook and Gene Henderson. Honorary pallbearers were Ray Plott, Jeff Plott, Jason Woody, Gary Harper and James Allison. Interment was in the church cemetery.

           The family received friends at West Union Baptist Church Tuesday evening from 6 until 9 p.m.

john donald stevenson

 

           Mr. John Donald Stevenson, age 87, of Young Harris, GA, passed away Wednesday, February 22, 2012 in Northeast Georgia Medical Center in Gainesville, GA.

           Mr. Stevenson was born on Wednesday, October 22, 1924, in Detroit, MI. He was a veteran of World War II, and served in the U.S. Army Air Corps (which later became the U.S. Air Force) as a lieutenant. He moved to the Young Harris area approximately 20 years ago, from Oak Park, MI. Mr. Stevenson was a 32nd Degree Mason, and a Shriner; a member of Ferndale Masonic Lodge, #506, F & AM, in Michigan. John had served as Past Patron of the Order of the Eastern Star, #460, in Michigan. He was an avid bridge player, and of the Methodist faith.

           John will be especially missed by his family: his wife, Patricia Stevenson, of Young Harris; two sons and their wives: James and Nora Stevenson, of Berkley, MI, and John and Janice Stevenson, of Mt. Clemens, MI; several nieces and nephews; an aunt, Fran Harris, of Oakville, Ontario, Canada; five grandchildren, and two great grandchildren.

           Private family memorial services will be held later in Canada.
