Vernon martin, age 75, of Hiawassee, GA, born in New Orleans, died at Veteran’s Hospital in Decatur the evening of February 22, 2005 after a brief illness.

Survived by his wife Ethelyn of Hiawassee and a son, Vernon Lee Martin, Jr. of Virginia Beach, VA.

Memorial service was held on march 3, 2005 at 2 p.m. at McConnell Memorial Baptist Church.

mr. coney garrett

 

Mr. Coney Garrett, age 59, of Cleveland, GA, formerly of Hiawassee, GA, died Friday, February 25, 2005 in Northeast Georgia Medical Center in Gainesville.

Mr. Garrett was born January 28, 1946 in Towns County, GA to Ray M. and Geneva (Beck) Garrett.  He was a member of Calvary Baptist Church, and was retired from General Motors.  Other than his parents he was preceded in death by a son, John Craig Garrett.

Survivors include: wife, Suzanne Garrett of Cleveland, GA; son, Brian Keith Garrett of Hiawassee, GA; son Joshua Garrett of Cleveland, GA; daughter, Cynthia and Randy Kinsey of Clermont, GA; sister, Virginia Denton of Athens, GA; sister, Regina and Larry Ivey of Gainesville, GA; sister, Lavonia and Larry Burrell of Hiawassee, GA; sister, Janice and Jerry Carder of Gainesville, GA; brother, Tony and Barbara Garrett of Gainesville, GA; grandsons, Cody, Will and Rett, several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were held Tuesday, March 1, 2005 at 2 p.m. at the Chapel of Cochran Funeral Home with Rev. Johan Jobert and Rev. Glenville Nichols officiating.  Music was provided by Peggy McGee and Allen Flowers.  Pallbearers were Mike Cowart, Ronnie Plott, Larry Burrell, Wayne Garrett, Jerry Carder and Larry Ivey.  Honorary pallbearers were Keith Moss, Shane Garrett and Darrell Garrett.  Burial was in Macedonia Baptist Church Cemetery.

annie wandea unkefer

 

Annie Wanda Unkefer, 73, died February 28th, 2005 at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Atlanta, GA after a short illness.  Wanda was born in Ozark, AL on October 5, 1931 and is of Protestant faith.  She was the loving wife of Ralph C. Unkefer, married September 7, 1957 in Deland Florida.  Wanda worked for the FBI in Washington, D.C. and General Dynamics at Cape Canaveral, FL.  She was the devoted mother of two sons and daughter-in-law, Steve Unkefer of Merritt Island, FL, Gary and Lisa Unkefer of Dunwoody, GA.  Other survivors include brothers-in-law Roy Unkefer of Sandy Springs, GA and Robert Unkefer of Jacksonville, FL.

Previously the Unkefer’s have resided in California, Florida and Atlanta, GA.  For the past ten years they have been residents of Young Harris, Ga.  Wanda was past Regent of Old Unicoi Chapter of Daughters of the American Revolution.  Her interests were genealogy, DAR, reading and quilting.

A memorial service is to be held Saturday, March the 12th, 2005 at 2 p.m. at Sharp memorial United Methodist Church, 1114 main Street, Young Harris, GA.  The Rev. Patty Ryle Clay presiding.  In lieu of flowers, a donation to the American Lung Association would be appropriate.

Cremation services provided by Cremation Society of the South.

mrs. ethel ruby rankin

 

Mrs. Ethel Ruby Rankin, age 97, of Hiawassee, passed away Monday, February 28, 2005 in Chatuge Regional Hospital.

Mrs. Rankin was born September 23, 1907 in Virginia to John and Anna (Gonchar) Michalko.  She moved to Towns County in 1994 from Bainbridge, GA and was of the Methodist faith.  Mrs. Rankin was the widow of the late Charles R. Rankin.

Survivors include: daughter, Roberta Rankin of Warne, NC, and granddaughter, Sarah McCarroll of Warne, NC.

Memorial services were held at 2 p.m. Saturday, March 5, 2005 from the Susan B. Harris Chapel at Young Harris College.

In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that memorials in Mrs. Rankin’s memory be made to the Fred Register Endowment for Children’s Theatre at Young Harris College, P.O. Box 68, Young Harris, GA 30582.
