eugene arrowood

 

Mr. Eugene Arrowood, age 79, of Hiawassee died Wednesday, march 3, 2004 at his home.

Mr. Arrowood was born in Towns County, on June 30, 1924, a son of the late Son and Lassie (Parton) Arrowood.  He was of the Baptist faith.  Mr. Arrowood was a member of the Republican party and loved to trade.  He served in the CCC’s in the 1940’s.

He was preceded in death by a daughter, Reavonda Arrowood in 1990.  Mr. Arrowood is survived by his wife, Bessie (Kimsey) Arrowood of the home; son, Michael Arrowood of Hiawassee, GA; sister, Corene Hunter of Hiawassee, GA; grandchildren, Jessica Riddle and Megan Arrowood, both of Hiawassee; great grandson Cole Riddle of Hiawassee; several nieces and nephews also survive.

Funeral services were held on Friday, March 5, 2004 from Pine Grove Baptist church with Rev. Roger Townley, Rev. Ricky Burrell and Rev. Roger Burgess officiating.  Music was by the Eagle Mountain Quartet, Willie Nichols and Betty Wheeler.  Pallbearers were Bill Hyatt, Rex Burrell, Danny Blythe, Reggie Kimsey, Terry Wright and Gary Segars.  Honorary Pallbearers were Artis Owenby, Adam Riddle, Jackie Hunter and Rudy Eller.  Interment was in the Church cemetery.

Cochran Funeral Home of Hiawassee was in charge of arrangements.

william lee ross

 

Mr. William Lee Ross, age 53, of Newport, Oregon (formerly of Young Harris, Georgia) passed away on March 4, 2004 at his home.  Bill was preceded in death by his father, Mr. William E. Ross in 1999.  He is survived by his mother Jane (Miller) Ross of Young Harris; a sister and brother-9n-law, Mary and Stephen Newcome of Dacula, Georgia; nephew, Matthew Newcome, also of Dacula; sister and brother-in-law, Carol and Terry Rhoads of Denmark, NE; nieces, Mary and Vanessa Rhoads, also of Denmark, ME; an aunt, Mary Ann Spiva, of Eufaula, AL; and an uncle, Zell Miller, of Young Harris.

He was the grandson of the late Zeke and Willie Ross and Birdie and Grady Miller of Young Harris.  Graveside services were held on March 8, 2004 from the Old Union Cemetery with the Rev. John Kay officiating.

mary elouise shaw

 

Mrs. Mary Elouise Shaw, age 78, of Hillcrest Drive in Hiawassee passed away on Wednesday, march 3, 2004 at her home following an extended illness.  Mrs. Shaw was born on May 17, 1925 in Winder, GA., the daughter of the late Nellie Jenkins Boswell.  She had made her home in Hiawassee for the past twenty years, moving from Tampa, FL.  She was a member of the UMW, and the Sharp Memorial Methodist Church.

Surviving Mrs. Shaw is her loving husband of sixty two years, Edwin Shaw of Hiawassee; one daughter and son-in-law, Edwina and Robert Fimbel of Tampa, FL; two grandchildren, Michelle Fimbel and David Fimbel; many other relatives and friends also survive.

Memorial services for Mrs. Shaw will be held at a later date and will be announced.  The family requests that memorials be made to the American Cancer Society in Mrs. Shaw’s memory.

laura “vonie” garrett thomas

 

Funeral services were scheduled for 2 PM Saturday, March 6, 2004 at Barrett Chapel form Mrs. Laura “Vonie” Garrett Thomas, 91, Cleveland, GA.

The Rev. Chris Anderson, Rev. Keith Allison and Rev. Dave Fortner officiated.  Interment followed in Gateway Memory Park.  The family received friends from 2-4 pm and 7-9 pm Friday at the funeral home.

Mrs. Thomas  passed away Wednesday, march 3, 2004 at her residence following an extended illness.

Mrs. Thomas was born in Towns County, the daughter of the late Sam and Lydia Collins Garrett.  She has lived in White County for the past 52 years and was a homemaker and a member of Chattahoochee Baptist church.  She was preceded in death by son, O’Neal Thomas and granddaughter, Teresa Gail Thomas.

Survivors include her husband of 75 years, Boyd Thomas, Cleveland, Georgia; daughters and sons in law, Jimmie and Vernon McGee and Pat and Richard Welborn, all of Cleveland, and Jackie and William Fain, Clarkesville; sons and daughters in law, Bonnell and Marie Thomas, Jerry and Vivian Thomas and Herman and Billie Rae Thomas, Kenneth and Diane Thomas, Robin and Sherry Thomas, all of Cleveland, Barney and Mary Thomas, Clermont; Buddy and Carolyn Thomas, Norcross; son, Sammy Thomas, Cleveland; special friend and nurse, Marci Watson, Cleveland; 30 grandchildren, 35 great-grandchildren; 1 great-great grandchild; and several nieces and nephews.

robert forster

 

Mr. Robert Forster, age 87, of the Woods Grove Community of Towns County, passed away Tuesday, march 2, 2004 at Chatuge Regional Hospital.

Mr. Forster was born April 23, 1916, in Scranton, PA., a son of the late Issac and Mary (Foster)Forster.  He was a WWII veteran having served in the South Pacific with the 5th Air Force, retired from Allied Signal Corp., in Phoenix, AZ and was a fifty plus year member of Landmark Masonic Lodge F&AM in Wilkes Barre, PA.

He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Ruth Forster, of the home; daughter, Mrs. Judith Turner of Franklin, N.C; granddaughters, Ann Turner of Franklin, NC and Mrs. Mark K. Goodstein of Hampton, VA; great grandson, Kevin Goodstein of Hampton, VA; brother, William Forster of St. Augustine, FL.

george h. cloer

 

George H. Cloer, 63 of Zephyrhills, Florida, passed away Tuesday, march 2, 2004.  He was preceded in death by his father, Wiley Cloer and his loving first wife, Adora McGlamery Cloer.  He is survived by his beloved wife, Sherri; two children, Michael G. Cloer and wife, Michelle, of Buford, Georgia and Sharon E. Petrilli and husband, John of Valrico, Florida; mother, Bessie Tatham Cloer, of Hiawassee, Georgia; two brothers, Carl W. Cloer and wife, Ruth of Hiawassee, Bob Cloer and wife, Margaret of Atlanta; sister, Shirley Norwood and husband, Nick of Pearl, Mississippi; four grandchildren, Bradley, Daniel, Michael and Hadley.  Born in Hiawassee, Georgia, he resided in the Brandon area since 1968 before moving to Zephyrhills.  He served in the U.S. Army Finance Corps from 1959-1962.  He was Vice President and General Manager for the D.J. Overmyer Warehouse Company from 1961-1971, Owner/CEO of Westcoast Warehouse Company from 1971-1984.  George was a member of the Brandon Lodge #114 F.&AM for over 25 years, past member of the Tampa Consistory of Scottish Rite Masons and past member of the Egypt Temple of Shrine, Tampa.

Funeral services were conducted on Friday, March 5, 2004 at the First United Methodist Church of Brandon.  Private interment was held at Florida National Cemetery, in Bushnell.

The family requests that memorials be made to the charity of your choice, in the memory of Mr. Cloer.

dwight cecil swanson

 

Mr. Dwight Cecil Swanson, age 86 of Swanson Road in Young Harris, Georgia passed away on Tuesday, February 24, 2004 at Piedmont Hospital in Atlanta, Georgia, following an extended illness.

Mr. Swanson was born on June 7, 1917 in Towns County, the son of the late Virge Swanson and the late Correan Swanson.  He was a native and lifelong resident of Towns County.  He was preceded in death by sisters, Beunah Swanson Plott, Sue Swanson Hunter and Mildred Swanson Dyer; and brothers, Jack and Andrew Swanson.  Mr. Swanson was a member of Old Union Baptist Church.

Surviving Mr. Swanson is his loving wife of sixty four years, Eldie Neal Swanson, of Young Harris, Georgia; two daughters and sons-in-law, Shelbie and Frank Gunter, Geraldine and Harvey Jackson; one sister and brother-in-law, Ruth and Melvin Hunter; a sister-in-law, Marver Swanson; grandchildren and their spouses, Kevin and Jerri Gunter,  Julie Jackson Collins and Freddie, Kelly and Leeann Gunter, Connie Jackson Garrett and Jim, Tiffany Jackson White and Patrick; great grandchildren, Joshua Gunter, Scott Garrett, Katlin Gunter, Dakota Collins, Robby Garrett and Ashton Gunter; several nieces, nephews and many other relatives and friends also survive.

Funeral services were held on Friday, February 27, 2004 from the Funeral Home chapel with the Rev. Jimmy Rogers and Rev. Danny White officiating.  Special music was presented by EB and Diane White and Freda Nicholson.

The following gentlemen served as Pallbearers, Dean Dyer, Steve Hunter, Herman Hunter, David Kuykendall, Ronnie Odom and George Beck.  Serving as honorary Pallbearers were Paul Shook, Jerry Hancock, Odell Plott, Doyle Gunter and Clarence Collins.  Interment followed in the Old Union Baptist Church Cemetery.

elveta mckinney lamkin

 

Mrs. Elveta McKinney, age 72, of Hayesville, NC passed away Wednesday, march 3, 2004 following a period of declining health.  She was born to the late Evon and Abbie (Parker) McKinney in Towns County, GA., on November 20, 1931.  She was a duel member of the Hiawassee Chapter #305 and also Clay Chapter #11 Order of Eastern Star.  She was the Past Matron of Chapter #305 and held various other stations in both Chapters.

She is survived by her husband, Ben Lamkin of Hayesville, NC; one son and daughter-in-law, Miles and Brenda Fitts of Gainesville, GA; one sister, Mrs. Robbie Jean Mauldin, of Hiawassee, GA; two grandchildren, Ricky Fitts and Mark Fitts, both o Gainesville, GA.

Funeral services were held at Bible Missionary Baptist Church in Hayesville, NC on Saturday, march 6, 2004 with Rev. Doyce Waters officiating.  Pallbearers were James Hooper, Jason Dyer, L.G. Hamilton, Michael Morgan, Melvin Cantrell, Dan McGlamery.  Interment was in the Old Shooting Creek Baptist Church cemetery.  Banister Funeral Home of Hiawassee was in charge of arrangements.

jack clifford shook, sr.

 

Mr. Jack Clifford Shook, Sr., age 87, of Young Harris, GA., died Sunday, march 7, 2004 in Chatuge Regional Nursing Home.

Mr. Shook was born May 6, 1916 in Towns County, a son of the late Alex and Lulu (Hyatt) Shook.  He was a member of Many Forks Baptist Church and Stephens Masonic Lodge #414 F & AM.

Mr. Shook was was preceded in death by his wife, Edna Sparks Shook in 1992; two sons, Cecil Shook and J.C. Shook, Jr; daughter, Virginia Gale Shook; two grandsons, Jody Blankenship and Steven Shook; granddaughter, Pamela Shook’ brothers, T.J. Shook, Roy J. Shook; sisters, Minnie Mulkey and Varalee Gibson.

Surviving Mr. Shook are his daughters, Mae Stamey of Young Harris, GA., Dorothy Mathis of Hiawassee, GA., Carolyn Green of Doraville, GA., and Glenda Blankenship of Cathlamet, WA; son George Shook of Young Harris, GA., brothers, J.W. Shook and Ray Shook, both of Young Harris; GA; sisters, Gertrude Graves of Murphy, NC., Lois Parker and Betty Jo Sampson, both of Young Harris, GA; 29 grandchildren, 51 great grandchildren and 2 great-great grandchildren.

Funeral services were held on Tuesday, March 9, 2004 at Many Forks Baptist Church with Rev. James Lee, Rev. Mark Shook and Rev. Jeff Mathis officiating.  Music was by the Troy Phillips Family and Shirley Grizzle.  Pallbearers were Alan Green, Douglas Mathis, Landon Shook, Tim Shook, Gerald Silvey and Darrell Shook.  Interment was in the church cemetery.
