Emmie
“Sister” Dhu Chandler, age 91, passed away at her home in Young Harris
on march 15, 2008. She
was born in Marshallville, GA on April 22, 1916, to the late Willie Mae
Chandler and Alva Robert Chandler.
Sister graduated form business school and worked for over 50
years as
Secretary/Payroll Clerk at RE.A. Bowen
Construction Company
in Macon, GA, supporting her mother and younger sister. Later in life, her sister, Connie, came to
Macon to help Sister look after their ailing mother who lived to be 96. The sisters lived together for over 15 years,
first in Macon, and then in Young Harris.
They were a team; Sister doing and the gardening and yard work,
and
Connie doing the cooking, housework, and entertaining.
Both sisters loved flowers, birds, and
animals, and were well known at all the local nurseries where Sister
could not
resist buying just one more plant. YOU
knew as soon as you entered the driveway of their home that flowers
were
loved. A beautiful little sign greeted
anyone who came, saying, Come into the
garden, my flowers want to meet you.” Despite
the fact that Sister’s illness prevented her from gardening for the
past two
years, the daffodils, buttercups, irises, hostas, moss covered banks,
and the
trailing rose trellis, along with many flowering trees, are awakening
this
spring to attest to her labors of love.
Sister, also an avid sports fan, rooted for the Atlanta Braves
and the
Duke University Blue Devils. When she
couldn’t see them on TV, she listed on the radio.
Because she
was never a stranger to anyone, many friends will greatly miss her and
her
witty retorts. She was preceded in death
by her sister, Connie Griffin who died at 97 years of age on Christmas
night,
2007, and by her niece, Judy Pedersen of Young Harris.
She was a
member of Christ the King Church, and wrote in funeral requests, “No
matter
where I am when I die, I want to have my service held in this precious
place.” She was a faithful reader of the
Bible, having read it from cover to cover many times, never failing to
read it
each night and say her prayers. The
family requests that in lieu of flowers, memorials be made to Christ
the King
Church in her name.
Survivors include
her sister, Alice Chandler Webb of Merritt Island, FL; nieces and
nephews,
Susan C. Murray of Cocoa Beach, FL, Thomas S. Bone of Merritt Island,
Patricia
Isbel and Dina Hester of Durham, NC< Brett Henry of Queidersdack,
Germany,
Robin Pedersen of Columbus, GA, and cousin, Robin McLeRoy of Forsyth,
GA.
A memorial
service will be held at Christ the King Church in Hiawassee, GA on
Monday,
March 24, 2008 at 3 p.m. with the Rev. Don O’Malley officiating. A reception will follow the service at Christ
the King. Burial will be at a alter date
at Riverside
