essie mae turner

 

Essie Mae Turner of Hiawassee, GA, formerly of Canton, GA, passed away at the Chatuge Regional Nursing Home in Hiawassee on Sunday, April 6, 2006.

Essie was born in 1910 to Elmer and Julia Williams in Lathemtown near Canton, Georgia.  She lived in Cherokee County until 1997.  She married Hubert W. Turner in 1934 and had two sons, Ralph G. (Sandy) Turner of Hiawassee, GA, Dale (Gaye) Turner, Dr. Casey Turner of Canton GA, And Rev. Darren (Heather) Turner of Virginia BEACH, Virginia.  She had seven great grandchildren: James and Zachary Turner and Zachary Turner of Canton, GA, Samuel Turner of Virginia Beach, Virginia, Kaila Smith, Ryan Turner, and Elizabeth Turner of Hiawassee, GA.  Essie has a brother, Milton (Bedilla) Williams of Smyrna, GA and a sister-in-law, Winnie Turner of Cherokee County plus several nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Essie was preceded in death by her husband, Hubert W. Turner; parents, Elmer and Julia Williams, brothers and sisters-in-law Howell and Frances Williams, Frank and sara Williams, Doyle and Elizabeth Williams, and a grandson, Timothy Turner.

Essie was an active long-time member of Orange Methodist Church in Lathemtown, GA.  She taught Sunday School and bible studies and was a member of the choir.  She was also a member of a quartet that sang in other area churches and nursing homes.  Essie Coordinated a fund-raising effort to build a prison worship chapel next door to the county prison where her husband, Hubert Turner, was warden.  She worked with area churches, businesses, and friends in the county to build the chapel.  She organized schedules of volunteers to preach on Sundays, teach at Wednesday night prayer services, and teach Bible studies for the inmates.

Essie was raised attending Holbrook Camp meeting at Holbrook Campground where her family owned a cabin.  As an adult, she participated in prayer meetings, choir, and was a member of the Holbrook Camp Meeting Board of Directors.

The funeral will be held on Wednesday, April 19, at 11 a.m. at Orange Methodist Church in Lathemtown on Hwy 20.  Huey Funeral Home of Canton, GA located at 480 Main Street is handling funeral arrangements.

In lieu of flowers, the family request memorials be made to Orange Methodist Church Building Fund or to Orange Methodist Church Cemetery Fund.

mr. cleo lyghton heusel

 

Mr. Cleo Lyghton Heusel, age 83 of Hiawassee, GA passed away on April 16, 2006 following an extended illness.  He was born to the late Albert Keith and Helen Adair (Staggers) Heusel on April 7, 1923 in Salt Fork, Oklahoma.  He served in the military for twenty-two years and was a WWII veteran.  He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Ruth Heusel, of Hiawassee, GA; daughter & son-in-law, Susan & Leroy Ledford, of Hayesville, NC; sons & daughters-in-law, Allen & Barbara Heusel, of Stockbridge, GA; Jeffrey & Lisa Heusel, of Savannah, GA; Chris & Katie Heusel, of Lawrenceville, GA; brothers & sisters-in-law, Raymond & Violet Heusel, of Great Falls, MT; Harold & Edith Heusel, of Canyon City, CO; George & Norma Heusel, of Chicksha, OK; and also brother Clinton Heusel, of Woodward, OK; sister & brother-in-law, Rose & T.J. Nightengale, of Lodi, CA; and sister Elizabeth Stuteville, of Carnegie, OK; grandchildren, Deena & John Scott, Cindy & Jim Sauer, Melissa & Richard Tartawski, Amanda Heusel, Sara & Phillip Patterson, Shane, Kevin, Nicole, Noel Heusel, Daniel, Casey, and Michael Ledford, Step-grandchildren, Christy, Esther, and Zach Schaner, and ten great grandchildren.  A number of nieces and nephews also survive.  Funeral services will be held on Saturday, April 22, 2006 at 11 a.m. at Sharp memorial United Methodist Church with Rev. John Kay and Rev. Darris Baker officiating.  Interment will be in Laurel Hills Memory Garden cemetery.  In lieu of flowers, the family has requested donations be sent to the Alzheimer’s Association, Georgia Chapter, 855 Abutment Rd.
