gladys louise underwood

 

            Gladys Louise Underwood, age 89, of Hiawassee, GA, passed away Friday, April 25, 2008 at Union General Hospital.  Mrs. Underwood was born Sunday, July 28, 1918 in Towns County, GA to the late Luther White and the late Carrie Hooper White.  She was a member of Macedonia Baptist Church.  Mrs. Underwood was preceded in death by her husband, Herschel Underwood and daughter, Jeanette Chastain.

            Survivors include: daughters, Nora Lee Garrett and JoAnn McClure, both of Hiawassee, GA; 12 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren and 13 great-great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews also survive.

Funeral services were held Sunday, April 27, 2008 at 2 p.m. from the Chapel of Cochran Funeral Home with Rev. Harold Ledford officiating.  Music was provided by the Macedonia Baptist Church Singers.  Interment was in Macedonia Baptist Church Cemetery.  grandsons served as pallbearers.

ruby penland corpening

 

            Ruby Penland Corpening, age 91, of Hayesville passed away Sunday, April 20, 2008.

            Born in Towns County, GA, she was the daughter of the late John Burton Penland and Mary Jane Johnson Penland.  In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Quincey Corpening in 1979; a brother, Von Penland; three sisters, Euel Penland, Ethel Sims and Irene Kimsey Phillips and three nephews, Harold Kimsey, Floyd Kimsey and Ralph Phillips.  Ruby graduated in 1942 from Berry College in Rome, GA and later joined the Alumni Council of berry College.  She was active as a 4-H Director and a member of Cheerful Sounds.  She was also a member of Ledford’s Chapel United Methodist Church in Hayesville.

            She is survived by one brother, Wayne Penland of Franklin; ten nephews; three nieces; twelve great-nieces; fifteen great-nephews; twenty great-great-nephews; seventeen great-great-nieces and one great-great-great-niece.

            Funeral services were held at 3 p.m. Saturday, April 26, 2008 in the Chapel of Macon Funeral Home with Rev. Jackie Sellers officiating.  Burial was in the Mt. Zion Cemetery.

            The family received friends from 2-3 p.m. Saturday prior to the service.

            Nephews served as pallbearers.

            Memorial donations may be made to the Mt. Zion Cemetery Fund in care of Marcia Crawford, 174 Wayah View Drive, Franklin, NC.

euel bertha penland

 

            Euel Bertha Penland, age 89, of Hayesville passed away Tuesday, April 8, 2008.  Born in Towns County, GA, she was the daughter of the late John Burton Penland and Mary Jane Johnson Penland.  In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a brother, Von Penland, two sisters, Ethel Sims and Irene Kimsey Phillips and three nephews, Harold and Floyd Kimsey and Ralph Phillips.  Euel received her Masters Degree from the University of Georgia and retired as a school librarian in Forsyth County.  She was also a member of Ledford’s Chapel United Methodist Church in Hayesville.

            She is survived by one brother, Wayne Penland of Franklin; one sister; Ruby Corpening of Hayesville; ten nephews; three nieces; twelve great-nieces; fifteen great-nephews; twenty great-great-nephews; seventeen great-great-nieces and one great-great-great-niece.

            Funeral services were held at 3 p.m. Saturday, April 12, 2008 in the Chapel of Macon Funeral Home with Rev. Jackie Sellers officiating.  Burial was in the Mt. Zion Cemetery.  The family received friends from 2-3 p.m. Saturday prior to the service.  Nephews served as pallbearers.

            Memorial donations may be made to the Mt. Zion Cemetery Fund in care of Marcia Crawford, 175 Wayah View Drive, Franklin, NC.

lillian hogsed

 

            Mrs. Lillian Hogsed, age 73 of Hiawassee, GA passed away on Monday, April 28, 2008 following a period of declining health.  She was born to the late Vernon and Rosa Bell Reynolds on June 11, 1934 in Clay County, NC.

            She is survived by her husband, Mr. lake Hogsed, of Hiawassee, GA; daughters and sons-in-law, Mary and Steve Payne, of Hiawassee, GA; Susie and Wes Hooper of young Harris, GA; step-daughter and husband, Nancy and Rudy Curtis, of Irmo, SC; brother, Kenneth Reynolds, of Hayesville, NC; five grandchildren, three great-grandchildren and a number of nieces and nephews also survive.

Funeral services were held on Wednesday, April 30, 2008 at 11 a.m. from Macedonia Baptist Church with Rev. Harold Ledford and Rev. Jimmy Rogers officiating.  Music was provided by Stanley and Karen Wood.  Pallbearers were: Johnny Hogsed, Jimmy Hogsed, Eddie Palmer, Tim Reynolds, Odell Ivester and Jimmy Taft.  Interment was in Old Shooting Creek Baptist Church Cemetery in Hayesville, NC.  Banister Funeral Home of Hiawassee in charge of arrangements.
