thelma marshall norton

 

Mrs. Thelma Marshall Norton, age 87 of Young Harris, GA, passed away Friday, May 4, 2007 at Chatuge Regional Nursing Home.  Mrs. Norton was born Monday, August 25, 1919 in Polk County, TN to the late Frank Marshall and the late Golden Wright Marshall.  Mrs. Norton was a lifelong resident of Towns County and a member of old Brasstown Baptist Church.  She was preceded in death by her husband, Hubert Norton, brother, Gwin Marshall and sister, Louise Puett.

Survivors include: son and daughter-in-law, Joseph and Frances Norton of Young Harris, GA, son and daughter-in-law, Rex and Judy Norton of Young Harris, GA, brothers, Robert Marshall of young Harris, GA, Glen Marshall of Ellijay, GA, and Ray Marshall of Hixon, TN, granddaughters, Lisa Seaborn and Penny Ledford, grandson’s Jody Norton, and Kenny Norton, great-grandchildren, Emily Ledford, Cole Ledford, James Norton and Darby Norton.

Funeral services were held Monday, May 7, 2007 at 2 p.m. from the Old Brasstown Baptist Church with the Rev. Billy Stiles officiating.  Music was provided by, Old Brasstown Baptist Church Choir.  Interment followed in Old Brasstown Baptist Church Cemetery.  Serving as pallbearers were: Jody Norton, Kenny Norton, Terry Ledford, Wayne Seaborn, Cecil Dye and Lonnie Marcus.

joseph anthony fortunato

 

Mr. Joseph Anthony Fortunato, age 79, of Hiawassee, GA passed away on Tuesday, May 1, 2007 following a period of declining health.  He was born to the late Joseph and Eugenia Lonza Fortunato on January 9, 1928 in Montclair, NJ.  He served as Past Grand Knight of Knights of Columbus in palm Beach Gardens, FL.

He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Nancy Fortunato of Hiawassee, GA; sons, Robert S. Fortunato of Palm, Beach Gardens, FL and Joseph R. Fortunato of Jupiter, FL; brothers, Carmen Fortunato and Alfred Fortunato, both of new Jersey; three grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and a number of nieces and nephews also survive.

Memorial services were held Thursday, May 3, 2007 at 11 a.m. from St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church in Blairsville, GA with Father Richard Wise officiating.

evelyn denton groves

 

Evelyn Denton Groves of the Myers Chapel community in Hayesville passed away quietly at home on May 3 2007 after along illness.  She was 82 years old.  A native of Hiawassee, GA, she had lived in Clay County since 1948.  She was preceded in death by her husband of over 50 years, William T. (Jack) Groves; her parents, Mr. and Mrs. J.Y. Denton; her brother, J.C. Denton; and her grandson, Bert Groves.

Evelyn graduated from Towns County High School and Young Harris College and taught elementary classes in Hiawassee and Shooting Creek schools for several years.  She later went into banking and retired after 30 years as an assistant Vice-President of the Bank of Hiawassee.  She was active for many years as a member of Myers Chapel United Methodist Church, and attended Sweetwater united Methodist Church, giving her love and gift playing the piano to both.  She was a member in the Veterans of Foreign Wars Lady’s Auxiliary, the Clay County Home Demonstration Club, and the Young Harris College alumni Association.  Volunteering with the American Cancer Society, the American Red Cross, a local Cub Scout Troop, and as a 4-H club leader, she enjoyed giving to others.

In her retirement years, Evelyn enjoyed time at home on the family farm, baking, raising flowers, playing the piano, gospel singing, and traveling with her husband.  Never still, she was always ready with food, cake, and a witty smile for every occasion.  She was known by all as a devoted, loving wife, mother and grandmother; a generous contributor to the community; and a source of inspiration to her family and friends.

Survivors include her son and daughter-in-law, Larry and Yoshia Groves; her daughter and son-in-law, Debbie and Mike Duncan; her brother, J. William Denton; sisters, Elois Anderson and Jeanie Anderson and brother-in-law, Ray Anderson; sisters-in-law, Donnie Denton and Rosalyn Groves; granddaughter, Mika Groves; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were held at 3 p.m. Sunday, may 6, 2007 in the Chapel of Ivie Funeral Home, Hayesville with the Revs. Mike Duncan and Jackie Sellers officiating.  Interment was in the Hayesville First United Methodist Church Cemetery.  Pallbearers were: Russell Groves, Bob Anderson III, John Denton, Steve and Dustin Miller, and Terry Taylor.  The family received friends from 1-2:45 p.m. Sunday afternoon at the Ivie Funeral Home, Hayesville prior to the services. 

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made in memory of Evelyn Denton Groves to the American Cancer Society, Hayesville Chapter, PO Box 1193, Hayesville, NC 28904.

billy richard herb

 

Mr. Billy Richard Herb, age 74, of Jones Gap Rd., Hiawassee, GA, formerly of McDonough, passed away on Sunday, April 29, 2007 in the Lanier Park Hospital in Gainesville following an extended illness.  Mr. Herb was born February 1, 1933 in Macon, GA, the son of the late James C. Herb and the late Ella Ryles Herb.  He was preceded in death by his wife, Phyllis Pickens Herb and also a brother, Joe Herb.  He attended the Towns County Senior Center and also was a Lions Club member.  Mr. Herb was of the Baptist faith.

Surviving Mr. Herb are one son, Tommy Herb of Hiawassee; one daughter, Tonya and Wesley Sheffield of Stockbridge, GA; three brothers and two sisters-in-law, Charles and Linda Herb, Frank Herb, William Lee and pat Herb all of Macon, GA; two grandchildren, Ricky Herb and Misty Sheffield; many other relatives and friends also survive.

Funeral services were held on Wednesday, May 2, 2007 from the funeral home chapel with the Rev. Hubert Legg officiating.  Special music was Mr. Herb’s favorite hymns.
