            Mr. Don Barnes age 72, of Sampson Rd., Young Harris passed away on Monday, May 25, 2009 in the Chatuge Regional Hospital in following an extended illness.  Mr. Barnes was born on Feb. 23, 1937 in Towns County, the son of the late William Hershel Barnes and the late Ida Beck Barnes.  He was a veteran of the US Navy of the Korean War.  Don had been employed with Pike Electric for several years and also had been employed with Towns County Sheriff’s Department as a deputy and Blairsville City Police Department for several years.  He loved to hunt and fish in his spare time.  He was preceded in death by his wife, Aileen Sampson Barnes, two brothers, Van and William A. Barnes, two sisters, Geraldine Potter and Regina Wheeler, a brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Hoyt and Ella Joe Shook.  Mr. Barnes attended Cornerstone Baptist Church. 

Surviving Mr. Barnes are two sons, Bill Barnes of Blairsville, Jim Barnes of Blairsville, two sisters, Ivylee Burrell and Faye queen both of Hiawassee, four sisters-in-law and three brothers-in-law, Mary Ruth Sampson and Mary Holloway of Young Harris, Lula Barnes, Claudine and Terry Stroud, Edwin Wheeler and Jay Queen all of Hiawassee, two grandchildren, Audrianna and Devin Barnes, many other relatives and friends also survive.

Graveside services were held on Wednesday May 27, 2009 at 2 p.m. from the Cornerstone Baptist Church Cemetery with Chaplin Roy Bateman officiating.  Military honors were presented by the North Georgia Honor Guard.  Following the servicers he was laid to rest beside his beloved wife, Aileen.  The family met with friends following the services.  In lieu of flowers if you wish, the family requests that donations may be made to Cornerstone Baptist Church in memory of Mr. Barnes.
