joseph melvin plunkett

 

Mr. Joseph Melvin Plunkett, age 80, of Young Harris, GA, passed away Thursday, June 22, 2006 at North East Georgia Medical Center.

Mr. Plunkett was born Sunday, July 26, 1926 in Atlanta, GA to the late Joseph Smith Plunkett and Adele Veal Plunkett.  He was a member of McConnell Memorial Baptist Church of Hiawassee, former member of Riverdale and Clayton County Zoning Boards, Clayton County Water Authority Board, served as a deacon at First Baptist Church Riverdale and was a U.S. Coast Guard Veteran during WWII.

Survivors include wife, Margaret Plunkett of young Harris, GA; sons & daughters-in-law, Charles and Debra Plunkett of Fayetteville, GA, Bobby and Marilyn Plunkett of Jonesboro, GA, David and Vickie Plunkett of Annandale, VA, Barry and Laura Plunkett of Houston, TX and Tim and Haley Plunkett of Douglasville, GA; brothers and sisters-in-law, Billy and Betty Plunkett of Barefoot Bay, FL and Vernon and Mary Plunkett of Mableton, GA; ten grandchildren, 3 great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were held Sunday, June 25, 2006, at 3 p.m. from the McConnell Memorial Baptist Church with Dr. Rudy Patton officiating.  Music was provided by Rev. Marc McFarland and A Ladies Ensemble.  Interment was in Osborn Cemetery.  Serving as pallbearers were Bryant Ivey, Harold Smith, Jim Whelchel, Charles Tate, Bob Davis, and Ron Bartlett.

roger lynn holdaway

 

Mr. Roger Lynn Holdaway, age 57, of Hiawassee, GA, passed away Friday, June 23, 2006 at the V.A. Hospital in Atlanta.

Mr. Holdaway was born Wednesday, March 23, 1949 in Smyth Co., VA to Pearlie Sullivan Holdaway of Marion, VA and the late Emmitt Holdaway.  He was a member of Marion Chapel Non-Denominational Church in Marion VA and a U.s. Navy Veteran.

Survivors, in addition to his mother, include; wife, Mary Rachel Holdaway of Hiawassee, GA; son & daughter-in-law, Jason and Amanda Holdaway of Young Harris, GA; sister, Sharon Jack, MD; brother, Gerald Holdaway of Marion, VA; granddaughter, Savannah Holdaway; grandson, Halen Holdaway; several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were held Tuesday, June 27, 2006 at 2 p.m. from the Cochran Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Jerry Young, Rev. Jimmy Rogers, and Rev. David Moody officiating.  Music was provided by West Union Choir.  Interment was in Mt. Zion Baptist Church Cemetery.  Serving as pallbearers were Nathan Noblet, Jack Moore, Jeff Moody, Alan Shelton, Jerry Lee Eller, and Mike Gribble.  Honorary pallbearers were Adrian Barrett and Arlan Ledford.

ethel starling gordon

 

Ethel Starling Gordon, 88, of Brasstown Manor, Hiawassee, died June 17, 2006 after a period of declining health.

Funeral services were held at 1 p.m. Wednesday, June 21, 2006, Cochran Funeral Home, Hiawassee Chapel, with private burial.

A native of Miami, FL and longtime resident of Clay County, NC, she was a teacher, retired from the Dade County (FL) Public School System.  She worshiped with her church family, Hiawassee Church of Christ.

Mrs. Gordon was preceded in death by her husband, Lowell Oscar Gordon, son Dale, and granddaughter Deborah.  Surviving are daughters Jane G. Cox and Catherine S. Gordon; son Steven C. Gordon; sister Mildred S. Mason; brother John Edward Starling; eight grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. 

The family expresses deep gratitude to the staff at Brasstown Manor, to Murphy (NC) Medical Center, and to Regency Hospice for their outstanding professional care.

Befitting Ethel’s love of children and education, in lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to the Christian Home & Bible School, 301 W. 13 Avenue, Mount Dora, FL 32757 or to Regency Hospice, P.O. Box 494, Hiawassee, GA 30546.
