john j. “jack” byrnes

 

John J. “Jack” Byrnes, age 71 of J.V. Ledford Road, Young Harris, GA, went home to his Lord on July 23, 2007.  He passed away peacefully in his home after a long illness.  Mr. Byrnes was born in Jamaica, NY, on September 22, 1935 to Henry Patrick and Cecilia Loretta (Gordon) Byrnes.  He moved to the Young Harris area in 1999 after residing in many places during his career.

Mr. Byrnes was a veteran of the U.s. Air Force.  He then began his career with the FAA engaged in air traffic control.  He volunteered for tours in Vietnam, Thailand and Iran, helping those countries to upgrade their air traffic control services.  He more recently worked as FAA liason to the Joint Special Operations Command, helping to coordinate special forces missions worldwide.  He retired after more than forty years of Federal service.  Mr. Byrnes was preceded in death by son Todd, age 22; brother Patrick and sister Arline.

He is survived by his loving wife of 38 years Janet “Jan,” son and daughter-in-law Timothy and Carmen O’Byrne and grandchildren Brittany and Ethan O’Byrne of City Island NY; son and daughter-in-law Jason and Christian Byrnes of Newnan, GA; and sister (in-law) Joan DeCamp of Daytona Beach, FL.

Funeral services were held on Friday July 27, 2007 at 2 p.m. from the funeral home chapel with Chaplin Bob Woodstock officiating.  Music was presented by Joshua Craig performing with Bagpipes.  Interment followed in the Laural Hills Cemetery with the North Georgia Honor Guard conducting military honors.

Mrs. Beatrice Parker, age 74, of Hiawassee, GA, passed away Thursday, August 2, 2007.  Mrs. Parker was born Saturday, July 1, 1933 in Towns County, GA to the late Benjamin Franklin and Myrtle Lily Sims Wood.  She was a member of Mt. Pleasant Church of God and the Red Hats Club.  Mrs. Parker was preceded in death by husband, Roger J. Parker.

Survivors include: daughter & son-in-law, Paula and Bobby Filkins of Kennesaw, GA; daughter & son-in-law, Amy and Christopher Thompson of jasper, GA; son & daughter-in-law, Richard and Claudia Parker of Buchanan, GA; son, David Parker of Columbia, SC; six grandchildren and six great-grandchildren; brother, Donald Wood and Doug Wood of Canton, GA and Del Wood of Carrollton, GA.

Funeral services were held Sunday, August 5, 2007 at 2 p.m. from the Mt. Pleasant Church of God with Rev. Glen Eller officiating.  Music was provided by Charlene Simpson.  Interment was in Burch Cemetery.  Pallbearers were Bobby Filkins, Christopher Thompson, Ricky Parker, Michael Parker, Mike Kelly, Parker Filkins.

hugh mcvay “mac” moore, sr.

 

Mr. Hugh McVay “Mac” Moore, Sr., age 86, of Hiawassee, GA, formerly of Atlanta, GA, passed away on Friday, August 3, 207 following a period of declining health.  He was born to the late Rubin and Kate Bivins Moore on May 19, 1921 in Obion County, TN.  He was preceded in death by his wife, Marjorie Herring Moore in 1994.  He was a member of Boy Scouts of America for seventy continuous years, a member of the American Legion, Veteran of WWII, lifelong member of United Methodist Church and United Methodist Men, Alpha Phi Omega, graduate of Georgia Tech, Board of Directors of Camp Glisson and IEEE.

He is survived by daughters, Sue Anne Harris of Ellijay, GA, Mary Moore of Hiawassee, GA, Nancy Holmes of Auburn, GA; son, Hugh McVay Moore, Jr. of Adairsville, GA; six grandchildren, fifteen great-grandchildren; and a number of nephews also survive.  In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be sent to: Boy Scouts of American, American Cancer Society, or Hiawassee United Methodist Church.

Memorial services will be held Saturday, August 11, 2007 at 2 p.m. from Hiawassee United Methodist Church in Hiawassee with Rev. Jim Blair, Dr. Charles Wilson, and Rev. Ken Fuller officiating.  Interment will be in Marietta national Cemetery in Marietta, GA on Monday, August 13, 2007 at 1 p.m.
