carrie jane akins

 

Miss Carrie Jane Akins, age 76, of Hiawassee, GA., passed away August 20, 2003 at St. Joseph Hospital in Atlanta, GA.

Jane was born on April 17, 1927 in Abbyville, GA., the daughter of the late Ned Carnes and Winifred Hicks Akins.

She was a former Executive Director of the alumni Association at Young Harris College for seventeen years and also received the Young Harris Medallion.  She was a 1945 Young Harris College graduate and had a varied career working with several governmental agencies before coming to YHC as it Alumni Association’s Executive Director.  Jane loved music and singing and had composed several songs.

Survivors included many cousins.

Funeral services were held on Saturday, August 23, 2003 at 11:00 AM at the McConnell Memorial Church in Hiawassee, GA, with Dr. Rudy Patton and Dr. Walter Sandell officiating.  Interment followed in the Old Union Baptist Church Cemetery in Young Harris, GA.

Pallbearers were John Lake, Jim Lamb, Roy Cole, Roy Robertson, Gunther Peters and Tony Branan.

Cochran Funeral Home of Hiawassee was in charge of arrangements.

mr. edwin lewis robinson

 

Mr. Edwin Lewis Robinson, age 55 of Loving Road, Morganton, formerly of Young Harris passed away on Friday, August 22, 2003 at his home following an extended illness.

Mr. Robinson was born September 9, 1947 in Murphy, NC, the son of Kay Nix Robinson and the late Albert Lee Robinson who passed away in 2000.  Mr. Robinson graduated from Towns County High School.  He was employed as a dental technician where he owned his own business for several years.  He was an accomplished guitarist and played at the Morganton Music Park for seven years.  For the last three years he played for the New Hop Baptist Church.  Mr. Robinson was a member of Zion Methodist Church and also attended the New Hope Baptist Church.

Surviving Mr. Robinson are his loving mother, Kay Robinson of Young Harris; one daughter and son-in-law, Shana and Charles Ingram of White, GA; one son, Ryan Robinson of White, GA; Fiancee, Joyce Waters of Morganton; sister and brother-in-law, Patti and Steve Bandy of Ranger, NC; many other relatives and friends also survive.

Funeral services were held on Sunday, August 24, 2003 at 3 p.m. from the Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Bob Waters, Rev. Vickie McVey and Rev. Bert Thomas officiating.  Special music was presented by The Caylor Family.  The following gentlemen served as pallbearers: Charles Fain, Ronnie Gooch, Gerald Heaton, Sonny Lee, Edwin Long, and Fred Sosebee.  Interment followed in the Zion Methodist Church Cemetery.

arlissa g. wheeler

 

Mrs. Arlissa G. Wheeler, age 81, of Hiawassee, GA., passed away August 19, 2003 at Union General Hospital.

Mrs. Wheeler was born February 10, 1922 in Polk County, TN.  The daughter of the late George Mark and Melbry Sisson Green.  She was preceded in death by her husband, Virgil Wheeler; daughter, Sara Jane Gunn; two brothers, Preston Green and Harlan Green; two sisters, Jessie Mashburn and Lerrie Mason.

Survivors include a brother, Albert Green of Greenville, SC; sister, Lois Mashburn of Murphy, NC; sons and daughters-in-law, Larry and Ann Wheeler of Hiawassee, GA., Virgil Miles and Sylvia Wheeler, Jr., of Demorest, GA., David Joe Wheeler of Clarksville, GA., Terry Michael and Laura Wheeler of Mt. Airy, GA; daughters and sons-in-law, Carolyn Sue Wilson of Buford, GA., Joan Lee Rogers of Buford, GA., Linda Louise Dyer of Hayesville, NC, Kathy Ann and Thomas Ross of Mineral Bluff, GA., Vickie Lynn and Byron Ledford of Maryville, GA., Lola Mae and Tommy Wilson of Hiawassee, GA; twenty seven grandchildren and a host of great-grandchildren and great-great grandchildren, as well as a multitude of nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were held on Friday, August 22, 2003 at 2:00 PM from the Cochran Funeral Home Chapel with Reverend Richard Mashburn and David Wheeler officiating.  Interment followed in the Osborne Cemetery.  Pallbearers were Cody Crane, Brian Dyer, Daniel Dyer, Rodney Harbison, Alan Ross, Jeremy James Martin, Steve Mashburn, Calvin and Joshua Ledford served as Honorary Pallbearers.

Cochran Funeral Home of Hiawassee was in charge of arrangements.
