john denton

 

Mr. John Denton, age 88, of Hiawassee, GA passed away Friday, September 21, 2007 following a period of declining health.  He was born to the late Damascus and Minnie Smith Denton on August 22, 1919 in Towns County, GA.  He was preceded in death by an infant son, E.H. Denton in 1957 and by Ruth Karen Jones in 1996.

He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Ruby Denton of the home; daughter and son-in-law, jean and Phil Nichols of Blairsville, GA; son and daughter-in-law, Gary and Lindy Denton of Hiawassee, GA; sister, Faye Watkins of Fletcher, NC; five grandchildrend; three great-grandchildren; and a number of nieces and nephews also survive.

Funeral services were held Monday, September 24, 2007 at 2 p.m. from Lower Hightower Baptist Church with Rev. Jason Cantrell and Rev. George Fortner officiating.  Music was provided by Lindy Denton and the church choir.  Pallbearers were Chad Jones, Jonathan Nichols, Jeremy Denton, Wes Denton, Tony Denton, and John Outler.  Honorary pallbearers were Dick Paris, Roy Lockaby, Ray Mashburn, E.C. Denton, Conrad Watkins, Bill Myers, Carl Davis, and Roy Chastain.  The North Georgia Honor Guard presented the graveside services.  Interment was in Lower Hightower Baptist Church Cemetery.

myra jo “laura” nicholson

 

Myra Jo “Laura” Nicholson, age 61 of Hiawassee, GA, passed away Sunday, September 16, 2007 at Chatuge Regional Hospital.  Myra Jo “Laura” was born Tuesday, October 23, 1945 in Muscogee County, GA to Myra Jo Porter Randall of Columbus, GA and the late Joe Randall.

Survivors include: friend, Claude Nicholson of Hiawassee, GA; daughter, Marco Anderson of Sugarland, TX; grandsons, Cody and Austin Anderson of Sugarland, TX; brothers, Joe Randall of Atlanta, GA, and Sidney Randall of Pittsville, AL.

Memorial services were held Wednesday, September 19, 2007 at 11 a.m. from the Cochran Funeral home Chapel with Rev. Michael Clinton officiating.

john tilden stocksdale

 

John Tilden Stocksdale, 94, of Hiawassee and Young Harris, Georgia, passed away September 13 at the Chatuge Regional Nursing Home after a lengthy illness.

Mr. Stocksdale was born in New York City and lived most of his life in Huntington and West Hampton, Long Island, New York.  Before moving to Hiawassee, he resided in Cape Coral, Florida.  He attended The Mohonk School in upstate New York, and The University of Virginia.

Mr. Stocksdale was founder and president of Acro Chemical Company, in Farmingdale, Long Island.  Mr. Stocksdale was an avid pilot and boatsman and was commander of Little Neck Bay-Power Squadron.  He also was the first Commodore of the Wyncote Yacht Club in Huntington, New York.  He was a member of the Cape Coral Cruise Club in Florida and an active member of the Towns County Lions of Georgia.

Mr. Stocksdale was preceded in death by his first wife, Alice Scheffey, who was mother of his two daughters, Sandra Lund Persson and Katherine Powell Kidwell.  He was grandfather to Kristine Ann Mele, Jennifer Lyn Mele Hamrick, and Lauren Brittany Kidwell.  Mr. Stocksdale is survived by his devoted wife of 38 years, Dorothy Woolston Stocksdale.  He was step-father to her three children, Susan Fox Grogg, Wallace Lee Woolston, and Gregg Alan Woolston.  He had two grandsons, Brett Fox and Jason Fox.

A memorial service was held September 22 at The Episcopal Church of the Good Shepherd, Hayesville, North Carolina, with Father John Rice officiating.
