Martha Arnold, age 69, of Young Harris, GA died Friday, September 28, 2007 at her residence.  A native of DeKalb County, GA, she had lived in Towns County, GA for the past 11 years.  She was the daughter of the late U.F. and Mattie Bishop Merritt and the wife of the late Jack Lee Arnold, who died February 11, 2001.  She was a retired printer and attended the Mountain of Faith Baptist Church.

Surviving are two sons, Steve Owens and Leslie Owens both of McDonough, GA; step-son, David Arnold of Helen, GA; five sisters, Canary Elizabeth Covington of Hiawassee, GA, Elaine Williams of Sumpter, SC, Joann Kramer of Jonesboro, GA, Marion Virginia Wimberly of Young Harris, and Dotsy Jane Howard of Leigh Heights, FL; three brothers, Willis David Merritt of Griffin, GA, Tommy William Merritt of Forest park, GA, and Lewis Olivier Merritt of Young Harris; and four grandchildren and four great grandchildren.

Graveside services at 1:30 p.m. Sunday, September 30, 2007 in the Hayesville Baptist Presbyterian Cemetery with the Rev. Tim Jones officiating.  In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made in memory of Martha Arnold to the American Cancer Society, PO Box 1139, Hayesville, NC 28904.

leola shook smith

 

Mrs. Leola Shook Smith, age 91, of Hiawassee, GA passed away Friday, September 28, 2007 following a period of declining health.  She was born to the late Elisha and Mary Lou Watkins Shook on September 28, 1916 in Towns County, GA.

She is survived by daughters, Wilma Wooley of Grand Blanc, MI, Carol Murray, Joanne Chambers and Patricia Hollifield, all of Hayesville, NC; brother, Arthur Shook of Young Harris, GA; sister, Selma Chapman of Acworth, GA; nineteen grandchildren; twenty-eight great-grandchildren, one great-great-grandchild; and a number of nieces and nephews also survive.

Funeral services were held on Sunday, September 30, 2007 at 2 p.m. from West Union Baptist Church with Rev. Jerry Young and Rev. Jimmy Rogers officiating.  Music was provided by the Shook Family.  Pallbearers were: Guy Wayne Shook, Terrell Shook, Terry Chapman, Cecil Shook, Rickey Plott, and Tommy Shook.  Interment was in West Union Baptist Church Cemetery.

brenda l. meadows

 

Brenda L. meadows, age 58, of Hayesville died Sunday, September 23, 2007 at her residence.  A native of Towns County, GA, she had lived in Clay County most of her life.  She was the daughter of the late Willard Jess and Myrtle Christine Bradley Ledford.   She was a 1967 graduate of Hayesville High School and had worked as a deputy clerk with the Clay County Clerk of Court for the past 15 years.  She was a member of the Hayesville Church of God.  She was preceded in death by tow sisters, Reba Cody and Christine Orr.

Surviving are her husband, Ira Meadows; daughter, Kelly Collins and Husband, Tommy of New Palestine, IN; son, Kevin Ledford and wife, Michelle of Blairsville, GA; step-son, Jeffrey Meadows and wife, Jennifer of new Palestine; three sisters, Ola Ledford and Eunata Chastain both of Hiawassee, GA, and Linda Garrett of Hayesville; two brothers, Gene  Ledford and wife, Jennifer of Portsmouth, VA and Hayes Ledford and wife, Jane of Hayesville; four grandchildren; and four step-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, September 26, 2007 in the Chapel of Ivie Funeral Home, Hayesville with the Rev. Patrick Garrett officiating.  Interment was in the Hillcrest Assembly of God Cemetery.  Pallbearers: Junior Chastain, Jeff Garrett, Kyle and Billy Cody, Jay Orr, and jack Ledford.  The family received friends from 6-8 p.m. Tuesday evening at the Ivie Funeral Home, Hayesville.
