Mrs.
Barbara Louise
DeYoung, age 84, of Young Harris, GA passed away Saturday, September
24, 2011
at Union General Hospital. Mrs. DeYoung
was born on March 25, 1927 in Boston, MA to the late Richard and Louise
Holmberg Curry. She attended Mt. Ida
Junior College and transferred to Boston University where she graduated
with a
Bachelors degree in English and further post graduate school work in
the field
of Journalism. She was also an
accomplished concert pianist and composer. She
composed a nocturne that was played by the
Boston Symphony Orchestra and conducted by Arthur Fridler. Barbara taught High School English, worked as
a Real Estate Agent and worked as an advertising manager for the
publishing
firm, Ginn & Company in Boston from 1962 to 1976. Her
interest in other cultures led her to
write seven books for the "First Book of..." series, some of which
include: First Book of Incas, First Book of Mayans, and First Book of
Aztecs. Barbara and her late husband of 33
years,
Andrew DeYoung, moved to the Young Harris/Hiawassee area to retire in
1986 and
operated a printing business. Barbara
served as the president for the Humane Society Mountain Shelter and was
instrumental to the development of the facilities that you see today. She was preceded in death by her parents;
loving husband, Andrew DeYoung and a brother, Richard J. Curry, Jr.
She will
be lovingly
remembered and missed by her daughter; Sandra Beck of Port Townsend,
WA; step daughter,
Molly HaggBlom of Lancaster, PA; and nephews Jim and Daniel Curry of
Camillus,
NY.
Memorial
Services were
held at 11 a.m., Monday, October 3, 2011 from the Chapel of Cochran
Funeral
Home in Blairsville, with Rev. Phil Heard officiating.
The family received friends at the funeral
home from 10 a.m. until the start of the service.
The
family has
requested that, in light of Barbara’s love for homeless animals,
memorial
contributions be made to honor her memory to the Humane Society
Mountain
Shelter, P.O. Box 1252, Blairsville, Georgia 30514.

Margaret
"Cecile" Doughty, age 74, of Young Harris GA, died at her home on
Thursday, September 29, 2011. Cecile was
born November 16, 1936, in Miami, FL and was raised in Arkansas. She has lived in Young Harris for 31 years.
As
an
active member of Sharp United Methodist Church in Young Harris, GA, she
served
on many committees and was dedicated in service to God, the Church, and
her
community. She along with her husband
enjoyed the UMC Nomad Ministry working on projects to improve the lives
of
others.
She
was
involved in Girl Scouting for over 30 years, beginning as a volunteer
leader,
and then was employed as a Field Executive for five North Georgia
Counties;
Towns, Union, White, Rabun and Dawson. She
loved providing opportunities for the development and positive learning
experiences for young girls.
Cecile
was a Preceptor member of the Blairsville Kappa Alpha Chapter of Beta
Sigma
Phi, an international Sorority dedicated to life, learning and
friendship.
She
pursued outdoor adventure through camping, boating, hiking and teaching
others
about nature and conservation. Cecile
was an avid gardener and used her creative talents in food preservation
and
cooking, earning a 1st place ribbon for her entry in the 2010 Green
Bean
Festival. She was an accomplished
pianist and enjoyed the love of music with her husband, family and
church.
A
lover
of cats, she was frequently involved with kitty rescue and supported
Castaway
Critters and the Humane Society’s Mountain Shelter in their efforts to
assist
homeless and injured cats. Her community
involvement also included Meals on Wheels and the Food Pantry.
She
is
survived by her husband of 57 years, James A. "Pappy" Doughty; son,
James Lee Doughty of Americus, GA; daughter, Sharon Doughty of
McDonough, GA;
and daughter and son-in–law Marcy and Danny Hawkins of Snellville, GA,
five
grandchildren: Jason L. Hawkins and wife Danyell; Shannon Tolliver;
Brian
Tolliver; Jeffrey Hawkins and wife Colleen; Cameron Doughty, and soon
to be
born great granddaughter Evelyn Rose. Cousins and other relatives also
survive.
A
memorial
service for Mrs. Doughty is scheduled for 2 PM on Tuesday, October 4,
at Sharp
Memorial United Methodist Church, Young Harris, GA.
The
family will receive friends at the church following the memorial
service. In lieu of flowers donations may
be made to
the Leukemia Foundation, Sharp Memorial United Methodist Church,
Castaway
Critters, The Humane Society’s Mountain Shelter, or the church of your
choice.
A private family service will be
held in the original city cemetery in Old Town Conyers, GA, where she
will rest
with her parents and ancestors.
