gladys opal mccord bryant

After just over a century of life, Gladys Opal McCord Bryant of Jackson, TN quietly passed away of natural causes, October 15, 2007 at Jackson Madison County General Hospital.  Mrs. Bryant, a former resident of Young Harris, GA, was the mother of Dr. James A. Bryant of Young Harris and Mr. Edward Glen Bryant of Jackson, TN.  Dr, Jim Bryant, a retired DeKalb County School Administrator and current sports photojournalist for the Towns County herald and Mr. Ed Bryant, former U.S. Congressman from Tennessee are the only two surviving children.  A third son, Michael Hayward Bryant died shortly after childbirth.  She had two loving daughters-in-law, Lisa Bryant of Young Harris, GA and Cyndi Bryant of Jackson, TN.

Mrs. Bryant was born May 5, 1907 on a cotton farm in rural Pontotoc County, MS, the third of eleven children.  This date was also the day that Mark Twain was thought to be lost at sea off the coast of Virginia.  She graduated high school at Chickasaw College HS in 1918 and was a graduate of Blue Mountain College of Nursing.  Beginning her forty year nursing career, she served as the Head Operating Nurse at Booneville Hospital until she married then served as a registered nurse at Jackson Madison County General Hospital until retirement.  She was preceded in death by her husband, N.A. Bryant, an electrical lineman with TVA and Townsend Electric Company.  After retirement from nursing, Mrs. Bryant became known around Jackson as the “biscuit lady” for her daily morning route around town selling country ham biscuits to her customers.  From car care to the courthouse, she walked her route and sold to all.  Herr lawyer son once cautioned that she needed a vendor permit.  “Don’t need a permit, the judge is one of my customers!”  She kept on selling and eventually helped him campaign his way to Washington.

The oldest daughter of Reuel McCord of Mississippi and Etta Scott King McCord of Texas, Mrs. Bryant was the grandmother of six grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.  A very devout Christian and a faithful member of Grace memorial Presbyterian Church, she maintained and supported Bethel United Methodist Church in her home state.  Mrs. Bryant is survived by her ninety-four year old younger sister, Katie Lee Dunlap.  Her body was eternally entombed next to her husband and son at Bethel Cemetery in Endville, MS.  Smith Funeral Home of Jackson and Browning Funeral Home of Pontotoc, MS handled the arrangements.

Mrs. Bryant was a woman with a quiet spirit and a servant’s heart.  She has received her heavenly cal, for which we who remain and those who awaited her in heaven rejoice.  After one hundred years and five months, she is now reunited with her other son.  Both Jim and Ed await that glorious day when all shall be united.  “So live that when the enumerable caravan comes to call us to that mysterious realm, thou go not like a quarry slave at night but sustained and soothed as one who wraps their cloak about themselves and lies down to pleasant dreams” (WCB).
