Charles Gustav Nelson, World War II Veteran, age 81 of Young Harris, GA, died in his home on Saturday, November 4, 2006 surrounded by his family.

Born in Brooklyn, NY, he was the son of the late Charles Nelson and Teresa Thiem Nelson Johnson.  He was preceded in death by one sister, Marie Dibella.  Mr. Nelson served his country in the Army during World War II.  He moved to the Blairsville area 26 years ago.

Mr. Nelson had been an active member in the Blairsville community.  He was a past member of the Lion’s Club, Kiwanis Club, and the Telephone Pioneers.  He was a past board member of the Union County Chamber of Commerce.  He was a local business owner for over 20 years.

Mr. Nelson had been an active participant and volunteer for Relay for Life since his own recovery form cancer over 23 years ago.  He was the current President and Director of the Azalea Cove Home Owners Association.

Mr. Nelson was a devoted husband, father and grandfather.  He was often seen at local high school sports events and band concerts as the cheered on his grandchildren.  He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Lillian A. Nelson of of the home; son, Robert Nelson of Ocala, FL; sons & daughters-in-law, Tim and Debbie Nelson of Blue Ridge, GA and Scott and Donna Nelson of Blairsville GA; grandchildren, Ericka Nelson Harris, Jeffrey Nelson, Leah Nelson, K.C. Nelson, and Julie Nelson and one great grandchild, Jim Cecil Conner Harris.  Mr. Nelson is also survived by one sister, Grace Grice of Atlanta, GA, and many nieces and nephews.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Union County Relay for Life or the American Cancer Society.
