lawrence k. “kay” ledford

 

Lawrence K. “Kay” Ledford, January 8, 1915- October 15, 2005.  Passed away peacefully in Roseville, GA.  Born in Young Harris, GA to William Paul Ledford and Lelah Coleman Ledford.  Preceded in death by his beloved wife Ida Belle Galloway in 1995.  Survived by brother, Poe (Bobbie) Ledford of Dunn, NC and sister, Tommye (Frank) Smith of Toccoa, GA and sisters-in-law, Docia Galloway Thompson of N. Richland Hills, TX and Susie Galloway Kimsey of Young Harris, GA.  Beloved father of Bonnie (Tom) Marx of Loomis, CA; Larry (Jane) Ledford of San Diego, CA; Beth (John) Russell of Rochester, NY and Dan Ledford of San Jose, CA.  Beloved grandfather of Paul (Heather) Russell, Michael Russell and Stefanie Ledford.

Graduated from Young Harris College, class of ’40.  Attended New York University.  Marine veteran of World War II and Iwo Jima.  Witnessed the raising of the flag on Iwo Jima in February, 1945.  Served in the Marines both active and reserves from 1934 to 1946 performing combat intelligence duties as part of the 5th Marine Division.  Former Director of security and Protection at what is today known as J.P. Morgan Chase in New York City.  Retired to Sacramento, CA and later Roseville, GA.

Funeral services were held on October 21, 2005.  Arrangements were by Mt. Vernon Mortuary and Memorial Park in Fair Oaks, CA.  Remembrances may be made in Kay’s name to Young Harris College, P.O. Box 145, Young Harris, GA 30582.

mrs. annie mae hughes

 

Mrs. Annie Mae Hughes, age 93, of Plott Town Rd., Young Harris passed away on Saturday, Nov. 12, 2005 in the Chatuge Regional Nursing Home following an extended illness.  Mrs. Hughes was born on March 24, 1912, the daughter of the late Alfred Kuykendall and the late Maggie Henson Kuykendall.  She was a native and lifelong resident of Towns County.  She was preceded in death by her husband, Floyd Hughes in 1945, son, Albert Hughes in 1975, grandson, Ricky Hughes in 1960, two sisters, Bert Nichols and Gustie Silvey, brothers, Harry, Bunt, George, Auther and Fannin Kuykendall.  Mrs. Hughes was a member of Old Union Baptist Church.

Surviving Mrs. Hughes are one daughter, Maudine Fortenberry of Blairsville, three sons and two daughter-in-laws, Lewie and Maxine Hughes of Young Harris, Frank and Mable Hughes of Marietta, Bud Hughes of Mayesville, three sisters, Inez Townsend, Essie Hood and Alma Gibson all of young Harris, thirteen grandchildren, twenty great-grandchildren, many other relatives and friends also survive.

Funeral services were held on Monday, Nov. 14, 2005 at 2 p.m. from the funeral home chapel with the Rev. Lester Sutton and Rev. Billy Stiles officiating.  Special music was presented by Ned Wilcoxin.  The following gentlemen served as pallbearers, Jeff and Randy Hughes, Greg Fortenberry, Justin Moody, Matthew Youngblood and Marty Hughes.  Interment followed in the Old Union Baptist Church cemetery.
