Clarence
Eugene McDougal, affectionately known as Gene and Pawpaw, age 68, and
his wife,
Esther Faye McDougal, affectionately known as Faye and Mawmaw, age 67,
of
Hiawassee, GA, and Old Town, Florida, passed away Wednesday, November
5, 2008
in Lowndes County, Georgia, from injuries they sustained in an
automobile
accident. They were Jehovah’s Witnesses
and were members of the Hiawassee, Georgia congregation as well as the
Chiefland, Florida congregation. Gene
was born on April 2, 1940 in Iuka, Mississippi, the first of two
children of Reba
and Clarence Oliver McDougal. Faye was
born on August 18, 1941 in Tupelo, Mississippi, the 6th of the 10
children of
Harvey and Elma Bailey.
When he was
just 9 years old, Gene started a newspaper delivery business that he
maintained
and developed for 22 years. Gene and
Faye grew up together and were high school sweethearts.
They eloped on November 30, 1957 and their
five children – sons Mike and Nathan and daughters Teresa, Lisa and Kim
were
all born in Tuscumbia, Alabama. Faye was
a homemaker who spent her entire life lovingly caring for her husband,
children
and grandchildren.
In 1971
Gene moved with his family to Safety Harbor, Florida and in 19976 he
opened his
own real estate company, C.E McDougal Realty Inc. which began operating
in the
Clearwater area. In 1983 Gene and Faye
moved with their two youngest daughters to Old Town, Florida. A couple years later Mike and Nathan joined
them, and the three McDougals continued working together with other
family
members joining the business over the years.
In 1985
Gene and Faye took a trip to Hiawassee, Georgia and Gene fell in love
with the
mountains. Since that time they have
spent part of each year living in Hiawassee.
Gene will
always be remembered as a hard working man who tirelessly cared for his
family
and never gave up despite obstacles. He
was outstandingly friendly and ‘never met a stranger’.
Gene was always fair and honest in his
dealing with others. He loved fishing,
boating and reading and he took special pleasure in recounting family
memories
and events. Faye worked hard to care for
their family and loved to cook and sew.
She was also the family historian, preserving cherished memories
in
photographs and home movies. Gene and
Faye were always profuse in expressing love and showing hospitality
towards
all. In 2006 Gene suffered a stroke but
his beloved and devoted wife Faye nursed him back to health. In three weeks Mawmaw and Pawpaw would have
been married for 51 years. They married
young, grew up with their children and loved and cared for each other
and for
their family every day of those 51 years.
Gene and
Faye are survived by their five children: Mike and his wife Karen of
Trenton,
Florida, Nathan and his wife Lisa of Trenton, Florida, Teresa Deremer
and her
husband Doug of Fairbanks, Alaska, Lisa Anderson and her husband Doug
of Old
Town, Florida, Kim Vartuli and her husband Joe of Hiawassee, Georgia. Ten Grandchildren: Nathan McDougal, Jr.,
Ashley Thornton, Joshua McDougal, Jeremiah McDougal, Amanda McFarland,
Amber
McDougal, Megan Anderson, Zachary McDougal, Hunter Anderson, Trevor
Vartuli. Gene’s mother
Reba McDougal-Burke of Muscle Shoals, Alabama.
Gene’s sister Linda
Hunt of Muscle Shoals, Alabama. Faye’s
sisters Louise Aycock and Barbara King, both of Leighton, Alabama. Faye’s three brothers, Kenneth Bailey, Dan
Bailey and Jimmy Bailey, all of Alabama.
Many other family members and dear friends.
A
memorial service discourse was given by Br. William
Ransford of the Cross City, Florida congregation of Jehovah’s Witnesses. Bro. Rick Butler of the Hiawassee, Georgia
Congregation officiated the grave side service at Laurel Hills memory Garden, Young
Harris, Georgia. Pallbearers were
