mr. andrew jackson silvey

 

Mr. A.J. Silvey, age 71, of Young Harris, GA passed away on November 15, 2004 following an extended illness.  He was born to the late Zeb and Kitty (Ledford) Silvey on September 8, 1933 in Towns County, GA.  He was preceded in death by a sister, Mary Nell Silvey in June of 2003.  Mr. A.J. Silvey was on the Young Harris City Council for sixteen years.  He served as Mayor Pro Tem for most of those years.  He was instrumental in building the present City Hall, in doubling the Sewer System capacity, in replacing the Water System lines, adding Young Harris College to the water system, and Brasstown Valley Resort to the Sewer System.  He is survived by his loving wife of 46 years, Mrs. Elaine Silvey, of Young Harris, GA; one daughter and son-in-law, Julie and Joe Thompson, of Young Harris, GA; son and daughter-in-law, Melvin and Trena Silvey, of Canton, GA; son and daughter-in-law, William and Amy Silvey, of Blairsville, GA; one brother, Mr. Ferrell (Zip) Silvey, of Young Harris, GA; five grandchildren, Shannon Silvey, Hailey Silvey, Jesse Silvey, Olivia Silvey, and Dillon Thompson; and one great grandchild, Savanna Masters.  A number of nieces and nephews also survive.  Funeral services were held on Wednesday, November 17, 2004 at 2 p.m. from Old Union Baptist Church with the Rev. Jimmy Hogsed, and the Rev. Tommy Jenkins officiating.  Music was provided by Willie and Nola Nichols, Doug Chastain, and Sarah Kelly. 

Pallbearers were David Brown, Chip Duvall, Michael Kelley, David Kuykendall, Michael Marable, and Philip Parramore.  Honorary pallbearers were Tommy Daniels, Willard Dyer, Cliff Gibson, and Jerry Jenkins.  Interment was in Old Union Baptist Church cemetery.  Banister Funeral Home of Hiawassee in charge of arrangements.

robert s. whitelaw, sr.

 

Robert S. Whitelaw, Sr., 82, of Hiawassee, formerly of Tucker, died Monday, November 15, 2004.

The funeral was 11 a.m. Thursday, November 18, 2004 at Bill Head Funeral Home, Lilburn/Tucker Chapel, with Dr. Don Pratt, Rev. Peggy Ray, and Rev. Ralph Easterwood officiating.  Interment was in Floral Hills Memory Gardens, Tucker.  A memorial service was held at 2 p.m. Friday, November 19, 2004 at McConnell memorial Baptist Church, Hiawassee, with Dr. Rudy Patton officiating.

A native of Kingman, Kansas, Mr. Whitelaw was an attorney.  He was a U.S. Air Force veteran of WWII, a member of Glenwood Hills Masonic Lodge #703 F&AM, and was a longtime volunteer with the Salvation Army.  He was a member of McConnell memorial Baptist Church and was active in the senior adult choir.

Survivors include his wife Dorothy Whitelaw, Hiawassee; sons and daughter-in-law Dr. Robert S. Whitelaw, Jr., Atlanta, James R. and Cathy Whitelaw, Lawrenceville; grandchildren James and Tina Whitelaw, Stockbridge, Robert and Michelle Whitelaw, Tucker, J. Christopher Whitelaw, New York, NY, B. Anderson Whitelaw, Knoxville, TN; great grandchildren Maggie Whitelaw, and Elizabeth parker; step-children Billy and Lynn Buckhalt, Stone Mountain, Gary and Debbie Thomas, Greensboro, NC, Lamar and Jordan Thomas, Athens; step-grandchildren Eric and Lori Buckhalt, Atlanta, Jason and Celeste Jackson, Loganville, Kris and Cindy Parker, Wilmington, NC; numerous nieces and nephews.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the McConnell memorial Baptist Church Building Fund, 84 Church street, Hiawassee, GA 30546.

ruby lee mccollough

 

Mrs. Ruby Lee McCollough, age 86, passed away Saturday, November 13, 2004.

Ruby was born Tuesday, October 15, 1918, in Castleburg, AL and had lived in Towns County the past 25 years.  She was a daughter of the late Washington and Stella Lee Howard Hodge.

Survivors include: husband, Neil McCollough of the home; son, James Cushing of Blairsville, PA; daughters, Mary Lee Cicero of Hiawassee, GA and Sylvia Jean Godfrey of Summerville, SC; brother, W.C. Hodge of Pensacola, FL; 10 grandchildren, 18 great grandchildren, 1 great, great grandson, several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were held wednesday at 2 p.m. from the Chapel of Cochran Funeral Home with the Rev. Ronald Kelly officiating.  Music was provided by Kay Kelly.  Interment was in Laurel Hills Memorial Gardens.  Serving as pallbearers were: Harold Williamson, Richard Peterson, Gary Deaton, Robert Hamm.

mr. william a. “billy” page, sr.

 

Mr. William A. “Billy” Page, Sr., age 68 of Hiawassee, GA (formerly of Athens, GA) passed away on November 17, 2004.  He was born to the late Green and Stella (Chapman) Page.  He was a member of Prince Avenue Baptist Church where he served as a deacon.  He was also a member of the Gideons.  He was the Manager of Dills Food Store and had previously managed Bell’s Grocery in Athens, GA.  He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Billie Sue Delay Page of Hiawassee, GA; son, Mr. William Albert Pate, Jr.; daughters, Elizabeth Darlene Shackelford and Debra Elaine Fournier; grandchildren, William Levi Fournier, Amber Diane Fournier, Trey Page, Krystal Page, Angie Crockett, Tessie Garrett, and James Brown; and five great grandchildren.  Memorial contributions may be made to: The Gideons, P.O. Mr. Donald Gene McNabb, age 57, of Hiawassee, GA passed away at his home on November 11, 2004 following an extended illness.  He was born to Neal McNabb and Ruby (Ledford) Colwell on March 24, 1937 in Harlan County, KY.  He was preceded in death by a sister, Betty Ruth Helton.  He is survived by his mother, Mrs. Ruby Colwell, of the home; daughter, Debra Garrett, of Hiawassee, GA; daughter and son-in-law, Tamra and Jerry Eller, of Hiawassee, GA; daughter and son-in-law, Terry and Ricky Seabolt, of Blairsville, GA; son and daughter-in-law, Bobby and Susie McNabb, of Hiawassee, GA; brother and sister-in-law, Tommy and Jimmye McNabb, also Hiawassee, GA; nine grandchildren, three great grandchildren, and a number of nieces and nephews also survive.  Funeral services were held at the funeral home on Saturday, November 13, 2004 at 2 p.m. with the Rev. Bryan Satterfield officiating.  Interment was in Lower Bell Creek Cemetery.  Banister Funeral Home of Hiawassee in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Basil Henry “Harry” Leather, Jr. age 74 of Hiawassee, GA passed away Saturday, November 13, 2004.

Harry was born Saturday, December 7, 1929 in Brooklyn, NY, to the late Basil Henry Leather, Sr. and Elizabeth Brenk Leather.

Survivors include: wife, Frankie Cooper Leather of Hiawassee, GA; daughters, Karen Spaulding of Denver, CO and Debroah Roney of Vienna, VA; grandson, Kyle Roney; granddaughter, Alison Roney; step-daughters, Teryl Redwine of Ft. Myers, FL, Lara Brown of Atlanta, GA and Lily Darby of Ft. Myers, FL, step-son Charlie Brown of Ft. Myers, Fl; brother, Richard Brenk of Denver, CO and 8 Step-grandchildren.

dollie fuller mcdonald

 

Dollie Fuller McDonald, 101, of Hiawassee, GA, formerly of Hayesville, died Wednesday, November 17, 2004 at Chatuge Regional Nursing Home.  A native of Towns County, she was the daughter of the late Henry Charles and Rachael Mae Aldridge Smith and the wife of the late Larry M. McDonald, who died January 28, 1972.  She was a homemaker and a member of the Victory Baptist Church.

She was preceded in death by a daughter, Odell McDonald Shook; and a granddaughter, Beth Shook.

Surviving are six daughters, Juanita Fuller Sistrunk and Reva Lois Fuller Price both of Hayesville, Magnolia Fuller Ballard Rhodes of Gainesville, GA, Idell McDonald Shook of Hiawassee, Jeanette McDonald Fonville of Tunnel Hill, GA, and Joy McDonald Crow of Monroe, GA; and 33 grandchildren, 60 great grandchildren, and 28 great great grandchildren.

Funeral services were at 2 p.m. Saturday, November 20 in the Woods Grove Baptist Church with the Rev. Richard Roberson officiating.  Burial in the church cemetery.  Pallbearers: Ernie Lee and Stuart Sistrunk, Dave Garrett, Samuel F. Dillard, Joey Swanson, and Steve Ballard.

The family requests memorials be made to the Woods Grove Cemetery Fund, c/o Jerry Kendall, 1700 Kendall Road, Young Harris, GA 30582.
