Mr.
Devero
Chastain, age 81, of Hiawassee, GA passed away on Sunday, November
23, 2008 in Union General Hospital.
He was born to the late John and Nancy (Arrowood) Chastain on
November
10, 1927 in Towns County, GA, and was a member of Union Hill Methodist
Church.
He was
preceded in death by his wife, Phyllis Chastain.
He is
survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Renee & Dennis Collins, of
Hayesville, NC; brothers, Archie Chastain, of Hiawassee, GA; Freeman
Chastain,
of Blairsville, GA; Tommy Chastain; of Young Harris, GA; sister, Vada
Lee
Hughes, of Young Harris, GA; two grandchildren and a number of nieces
and
nephews also survive. Funeral services
were held on Tuesday, November 25, 2008 at 2 PM from the chapel of
Banister
Funeral Home with Rev. Jason Derreberry officiating.
Serving as pallbearers were: Curtis Guice,
Kal Kindy, Jason Chastain, Anthony Warren, Carl Gillespie and Randy
Hampton. Music was provided by Carrie
and Kathy Dills. Interment was in Burch
cemetery. Banister

Mr.
George
Alvin “Al” Pierce, age 76, of Ashland Overlook, Young Harris, passed
away on
Tuesday, Nov. 25, 2008 in the Union General Hospital following. Mr. Pierce was born on Dec. 22, 1931 in
Philadelphia, PA, the son of the late Nelson and Emma Montgomery Pierce. After graduating from MIT with a B.S. in
aeronautical engineering and spending two years in the US Air Force,
Dr. Pierce
joined North American Aviation in Columbus, OH, as a Dynamics Engineer. During his eight years with North American,
he progressed to the position of Research Specialist while developing
numerous
methods of aeronautic analysis for flight vehicles.
At the end of 1963 he resigned his position
and joined the staff of the Aeronautical & Astronautical
Engineering (AAE)
Dept. at Ohio State University in Columbus.
Subsequent to receiving his PHD in AAE from Ohio State in 19966
he
joined the Academic faculty of the Aerospace Engineering School at
Georgia
Tech. During his tenure there, he made
significant contributions through teaching, service and research to
both the
institute and aerospace profession.
Throughout his tenure at Georgia Tech, Dr. Pierce served as
principle investigator
on many research contracts with NASA, DOD, USAF and the US Army. These activities provided financial support
for his graduate students and funded construction and development of a
million
dollar rotor test chamber for Aeroelastic Research.
In 1995 Dr. Pierce retired from his positions
as Professor of Aerospace Engineering and Associate Director for
Research and
graduate Studies at Georgia Tech. He
co-authored a book “Introduction to Structural Dynamics and
Aeroelasticity”. He was a member of the
Towns County lions Club. Mr. Pierce was
a member of Sharp Memorial United Methodist Church.
Surviving
Mr. Pierce are his loving wife, Katherine Satterfield Pierce of Young
Harris,
two children, Russell Howell of St. Pete, FL, Katrice Howell of
Tallahassee,
FL, one sister and brother-in-law, Betty and Roy Hamilton of
Philadelphia, PA,
three grandchildren, Graham and Carson Demont, and Brittani Howell,
nieces and
nephews, John and Collette Hamilton, David and Patty Hamilton, Barbara
and Ken
Jarrett, many other relatives and friends also survive.
A memorial
service was held on Monday, Dec. 1, 2008 at 1 p.m. from the Sharp
Memorial United
Methodist Church with the Rev. Darris Baker officiating.
In lieu of flowers if you wish, the family
requests that memorials may be made to Towns County Food pantry, PO Box
42,
Hiawassee, GA 3546 in memory of Mr. Pierce.
