betty henderson gooch

 

Betty Gooch, age 75 of Blairsville, GA passed away Saturday, December 29, 2007 at Union General Hospital after a brief illness.  Betty was born in Ava, MS on September 11, 1932.  She married Robert James Henderson, a native of Union County, and moved to Blairsville in 1972 with their four loving children.  Mr. Henderson preceded her in death.  Betty was a devoted wife, loving mother and wonderful nana.  Betty was employed by the Georgia Mountain Experiment Station and retired in 1995 and 23 years of service as an extension secretary.  She was a member of the First Baptist Church in Blairsville, GA.

Mrs. Gooch is survived by husband Glen Gooch of 21 years; four children and spouses: Jerry and Karen Henderson, Debbie and Bobby Wilson, Kim and Jerry Farner, and Robin and Billy Burnette all of Blairsville, GA; two sisters, Lena Harper-Klippert of CA, Opal Beglartour of NJ; step-children and spouse: Doug and Nancy Gooch, and Glendon Gooch of Blairsville, GA; eight grandchildren, Ami Terry of Cumming, GA, Robert Henderson of Destin, FL, Calvin Burnette, Lauren and Derick Dillinger, Kevin Terry, Jessica Farner, Jake Farner, and Clay Burnette all of Blairsville, GA; five step-grandchildren and spouses, Jeff and Karen Gooch of Murphy, NC, Stephen and Becky Gooch, Glenda Gooch, Brittany Gooch, and Jake Gooch all of Blairsville, GA; five step-great-grandchildren, Chandler Gooch and Morgan Gooch of Murphy, NC, Patrick Gooch, Peyton Gooch, and Pressley Gooch all of Blairsville, GA.

Funeral services were held at the First Baptist Church in Blairsville, GA on Tuesday, January 1 2007 at 11 a.m. with Rev. Danny Parris, Rev. Fred Lodge and Rev. B.A. Buchanan officiating.  Special music was presented by Terry Hooper and June Caldwell.  Burial was at Union Memory Gardens in Blairsville, GA.  Pallbearers were Robert Henderson, Calvin Burnette, Kevin Terry, Jake Farner, Jake Gooch, Clay Burnette, Jeff Gooch and Stephen Gooch.

max patton kelley

 

Mrs. Max Patton Kelley, age 67, of Murphy Hwy., Blairsville passed away on Saturday, December 29, 2007 at her home following an extended illness.  Mrs. Kelley was born on November 22, 1940 in Union County, the daughter of the late Lester Patton and the late Lola Seabolt Patton.  She was a native and lifelong resident of Union County.  She had taught school in Gwinnett County Schools for two years and had taught in the Union County School System for over twenty-eight years.  Max was a wonderful mom and grandmother.  She was preceded in death by her husband, Wallace (Bud) Kelley in September of this year.  Mrs. Kelley attended the House of Prayer Church.

Surviving Mrs. Kelley are one daughter and son-in-law, Casey and Keith Potts of Blairsville; two sons and one daughter-in-law, Chris and Karen Kelley of Blairsville, mark Kelley of Blairsville; three brothers and sisters-in-law, Rex and Melva Lyn Patton of Blairsville, Denny and Connie Patton of Blairsville, Phil and Ann Patton of Blairsville; four grandchildren, Seth and Becka Merritt, Connor and Chloe Potts; many other relatives and friends also survive.

A memorial service was held on Monday, December 31, 2007 at 4 p.m. from the House of Prayer Church with the Rev. Jerry Helton officiating.  Special music was presented by Freddie Burrell.  IN lieu of flowers, if you wish, the family requests that memorials may e made to the Max Kelley Scholarship Fund in Mrs. Kelley’s memory.

ed thompson, jr.

 

Mr. Ed Thompson, Jr., age 95 of Blairsville, GA, passed away Thursday, December 27, 2007 at his residence.  Mr. Thompson was born Tuesday, September 3, 1912 in Kings County, NY to the late Edward Thomas Thompson, Sr. and the late Cora Belle Waite Thompson.  He attended schools in Brooklyn, NY and graduated from Pace University.  He served in the United States Navy during WWII.  After the war Mr. Thompson resided in Stamford, CT and Miami, FL before retiring to Blairsville.  During his years of employment he held positions with such companys as Carter Products, Continental Check Corporation, Ryder Truck Lines, Riddle Airlines, Arvida Greenhouses, Decatur Iron and Steel Company and Southeast Bank.

Survivors include: daughter & son-in-law, Elizabeth and Terry Kelley of St. Augustine, FL; son & daughter-in-law, E. Thomas (Tom) and Mi Lan Thompson, III of Norcross, GA; daughter, Nancy Thompson of Atlanta, GA; grandchildren, Nancy Jennifer Folsom, Holly Elizabeth Vaupel and William Edward Folsom; great-granddaughters, Emily Mae Folsom and Aubrielle Vaupel.  Also the family would like to give special thanks to Linda Proco for her dedicated caregiving for both parents.

Graveside services were held Monday, December 31, 2007 at 1 p.m. at the Georgia National Cemetery in Canton.  In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that donations may be made to The Salvation Army.

george e. vonnoh

 

Mr. George E. Vonnoh, age 81, of Nottley Shores, Blairsville passed away on Wednesday, December 26, 2007 at his home following an extended illness.  Mr. Vonnoh was born on October 15, 1926 in the borough of Brooklyn, NY, the son of the late George A. Vonnoh and the late Veronica Dillan Vonnoh.  At the impressionable age of 6, his family moved to the town of Hollis, Long Island, NY.  After graduating high school, he volunteered for navy Service during WWII and served his duty on board a destroyer escort as a motor machinist mate.  During military service he developed a love for the sea and after his discharge, purchased his first boat for charter and began fishing full time in the waters off of Long Island.  In the winter of 1950 his love for fishing took him to the sunny Florida Keys where he successfully captained a series of boats.  After 35 years of fishing he decided it was time for a life change and in the mid 79’s found himself running a small town newspaper, The Graham star, in Robbinsville, NC.  Retirement then came calling and he and his wife moved to Blairsville, GA where he has lived for the past 16 years.  Also an avid gardener, he enjoyed plowing the field and planting vegetables and flowers.  He was preceded in death by his wife, Gigi Vonnoh and a brother, Gerald Vonnoh.  Mr. Vonnoh was a member of Bethel United Methodist Church.

Surviving Mr. Vonnoh are three sons and two daughters-in-law, George and Grace Vonnoh of Davie, FL, Kent and Tracey Reed of Marietta, GA, Pen Reed of the Cayman Islands; four grandchildren, Deidre, Ryan, Stockton and Knox; many other relatives and friends also survive.

Memorial services will be held on Saturday, January 5, 2008 at 11:30 a.m. from Bethel United Methodist Church with the Rev. Joe May and the Rev. Michael Morton officiating.  In lieu of flowers, if you wish, the family requests   that memorials may be made to the American Red Cross in Mr. Vonnoh’s memory.  Interment will follow at a later time in the Coosa Methodist Church Cemetery.

Mr. Nelson LeCroy, age 76 of Blairsville, GA, passed away Tuesday, December 25, 2007 at St. Joseph’s Hospital.

Nelson was born Sunday, September 6, 1931 in Cobb County, GA to the late Glenn Patrick “Pete” LeCroy and the late Velma Grizzle LeCroy.  He was a member of House of Prayer Church and US Navy Veteran during the Korean Conflict.

Survivors include: wife, Mildred LeCroy of Blairsville, GA, son, Daryll LeCroy of Blairsville, GA, daughter & son-in-law, Sydnie and Russell Mayers of Marietta, GA, granddaughter, Olivia Almeida of Atlanta, GA, sister, Carolyn Bramlett of Woodstock, GA, sister, Linda Fix of Blairsville, GA, brother and sister-in-law, Don and Mary LeCroy of Mableton, GA, several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were held Friday, December 28, 2007 at 2:00 P.M. from the House of Prayer with Rev. Jerry Helton, Rev. Bill Honaker, and Rev. Kyle Squire officiating.  Music was provided by HOUSE of Prayer Church Choir.  Interment was in House of Prayer Cemetery.  Serving as pallbearers were: Mark Bramlett, Patrick Fix, Marty Rozell, Mike Hodges, Curtis Colwell and George Gowder.  Honorary pallbearers included: men of the House of Prayer Church Choir.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that donations may be made to House of Prayer Church Choir or House of Prayer Family Life Center.

Mae Owens England, age 85 of Blairsville, GA, passed away Saturday, December 22, 2007 at Union County Nursing Home.  Mrs. England was born Saturday, September 16, 1922 in Graham County, NC to the late John Owens and the late Ethel Massey Owens.  Mrs. England was of the Baptist Faith.  She was preceded in death by her husband, Jimmy England and a son James Douglas England.

Survivors include: son and daughter-in-law, John W. and Pauline England, son, Larry J. England and his friend, Jackie, daughter-in-law, Jean England, grandchildren, Brent England, Rhonda and Todd England and Billy England and great grandchildren, Cameron Collins and Caylee Collins, all of Blairsville.

Funeral services were held Monday, December 24, 2007 at 2:00 PM from the Chapel of the Cochran Funeral Home with the Rev. Harley Hunter and Rev. Dwayne Patterson officiating.  Music was provided by the Old Liberty Baptist Church Choir.  Interment was in England Family Cemetery.  Serving as pallbearers were: Brent England, Billy England, Todd Collins, Eric England, Calvin Dyer and A.J. Wimpey.

Mr. Raymond Sullivan, age 88 of Blairsville, GA, passed away Wednesday, December 26, 2007 at Union General Hospital.  Mr. Sullivan was born Thursday, November 13, 1919 in Denver County, CO to the late Grayson Sullivan and the late Alice Souther Sullivan.  HE was a member of First Baptist Church of Blairsville and he loved to fish, garden and woodwork.  He was preceded in death by brother, Uary Sullivan, sisters, Virginia Sullivan and Eunice Swanson.

Survivors include: wife, of 69 years, Frances Sullivan of Blairsville, GA; son & daughter-in-law, Richard and Kathy Sullivan of Gillsville, GA; grandson, Benjamin Lenderman; granddaughters, Lisa Lewis and Brittany Sullivan; brother, Harold Sullivan of Stone Mountain, GA; sisters, Louise Kelley of Blairsville, GA and Marjorie McCurley of Blairsville, GA several nieces and nephews.

Mrs. Daphne T. Barber, age 85, of Turkey Trot Rd., Blairsville passed away on Friday, December 21, 2007 in Union General Hospital following a brief illness.  Mrs. Barber was born on December 9, 1922 in Peterborough, England, the daughter of the late Walter Turner and the late Grace Froud Turner.  Mrs. Barber was of the Methodist Faith.

Surviving Mrs. Barber are her loving husband of sixty-three years, Joseph G. Barber of Blairsville; one son and daughter-in-law Robert and Glenda Barber of Lucedale, MS; one daughter and son-in-law, Bonnie and Sid Turner of Blairsville; one sister and brother-in-law, Ann and Frank Schatzle of Long Beach, MS; four grandchildren, six great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; four nephews and a niece; many other relatives and friends also survive.

A memorial service was held on Saturday, December 22, 2007 at 4 p.m. from the Mountain View Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Susan Johnson officiating.  In lieu of flowers, if you wish, the family requests that memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society in Mrs. Barber’s memory.
