Mrs.
Hazel Lance
White, age 88, native and lifelong resident of Blairsville, Georgia,
passed
away Sunday, December 26, 2010 at Union County Nursing Home in
Blairsville.
Hazel was
born in
Union County, Georgia, to the late Bob and Bessie (Mauney) Lance. She was a member of Ivy Log Baptist Church,
the Retired teachers Association and had taught school for 30 years. She was preceded in death by her husband, John
White in 1966, and her sister Ruth Chapman in 2009.
Hazel is
survived by
a daughter, Jo Ann Cornwell of Blairsville; step-daughter, Ellen White
of
Buford, Georgia, and step-son, Telford and Wilma White, also of Buford;
two
grandchildren, Richard and his wife, Karen Cornwell and Kristi
Cornwell, two
step-grandchildren, Joy Davies and Jill Colsson, four
great-grandchildren,
Brody Brackett, Amelia Cornwell, Isabella Griffis and Conner Griffis,
several
nephew and step-great grandchildren also survive.
Funeral
services for
Hazel were held on Wednesday, December 29, 2010 at 1 p.m. at the chapel
of
Cochran Funeral Home with Rev. Tony Black and Rev. Jerry Karnes
officiating. Music was provided by Peggy
Chambers and Lita
Gowder. The following gentlemen served as pallbearers, Lewis Chapman,
Ira
Davies, Junior Puett, Bruce Gray, Don Rogers, Jack Lance, Jr. Interment followed in Ivy Log Baptist Church
Cemetery.

Mr.
Joseph Leroy Powell Jr. age 62, of Guffey Valley Road, Blairsville,
passed away
on Thursday, December 24, 2010 at is home suddenly. Joseph
was born on January 2, 1948 in Atlanta,
GA the son of the late Joseph Leroy Powell and the late Barbara Louise
Wright. Besides his parents he was
preceded in death
by a sister, Barbara Powell Sexton. Joseph
loved his dog and his friends in the mountains. He
also enjoyed fishing, watching football and
spending time outdoors. He had
lived in the region for 15 years. Joe was a kind and loving man. Mr. Powell was of the Baptist faith.
Surviving
Joseph are a niece Diane Sexton of Dawsonville, a nephew David Sexton
and his
wife Laura Sexton of Dawsonville and great nieces and nephews, Joseph
Sexton,
Rebecca Sexton, Anna Sexton, Benjamin Sexton and a son Jason, many
other
relatives and friends also survive.
Funeral
services were held on Sunday, January 2, 2010 at 4 p.m. from the
Mountain View
Chapel with the Reverend Stacy Dyer officiating. The North
Georgia Honor
Guard conducted Military Honors. The
family met with friends on Sunday from 3-4 p.m. In lieu of
flowers, if
you wish, the family asks that memorials be made to Eagle Ranch of

Mr. David
Cameron
Neblock, age 70 of Rizzitello Lane, Blairsville, GA passed away on
Wednesday
Nov. 24, 2010 in the Union General Hospital following a brief illness.
Mr.
Neblock was born on October 8, 1940 in St. Louis, MO, the son of the
late
Robert Neblock and the late Mildred Neblock. David
and his wife Cheryl owned and operated
AAA Lawn and Garden in Blairsville for the past several years. He was a loving husband, father, brother
and grandfather. He enjoyed fishing
,bowling and golf. Mr. Neblock was of
the Christian faith.
Surviving
Mr.
Neblock are his loving wife, Cheryl Fey Neblock of Blairsville, one
son, Seth Neblock
of Lansing, MI, one daughter and son-in-law, Cheryl and Mel Jacobs of
Vassar,
MI, three sisters and brother-in-laws, Cynthia and Jim Cilek of Mesa,
AZ,
Shelly and Richard Elston of Maricopa, AZ, Anne and Frank Volkman of
Streator,
IL, three grandchildren, Jessica Jacobs, Justin Jacobs and Jeremiah
Jacobs,
many other relatives and friends also survive.
A
celebration of
David’s life will be held on Thursday January 6, 2011 from 5-6:30 p.m.
at the
Grinds & glazes on the by-pass in Blairsville where the family will
meet
with friends. In lieu of flowers if you
wish, the family requests that memorials may be made to the Union

society in memory of David.

Mrs.
Virginia Ann Port Simonton, age 89, passed away peacefully at Union
County
Nursing Home on Thursday, December 30th. Mrs.
Simonton was born on June 18, 1921 in
Birmingham, AL. She was the daughter of the late Thomas
Tolbert
Port and the late Edna Davis Port. Virginia and her husband of 66
years,
Norman A Simonton, moved from Atlanta, GA. To (sic) Blairsville (sic)
in 2007. They were residents at Stonehenge
Assisted
Living. Mr. Simonton preceded her in death in August of 2009. She was also preceded in death by three
brothers: Harry Floyd, Tom Port and Charles Port, all of Rome, Ga.
Surviving Mrs. Simonton are son and
daughter-in-law, Ken and Angie Simonton of Decatur, GA, daughter and
son-in-law, Lynn and Barry Varian of Blairsville, GA, son and
daughter-in-law,
Gregg and Sharon Simonton of Baltimore, MD, a sister, Jo Anne Port King
of
Decatur, GA and two grandchildren Megan Marie Carmody of Boone, NC and
Sofia
Luz Maria Simonton of Baltimore, MD. Twelve
nieces and nephews and their families also survive.
Mrs.
Simonton was a loving and supportive mother, devoted wife, expert
homemaker,
avid conversationalist, animal lover, and trustworthy friend.
Though she
was part of a dying breed of refined southern women, she kept up with
current
trends, and always kept an open mind. Virginia was capable of
immense
loyalty. Although she was a private person, she loved meeting
people and
treated every person like she'd known them for years. She was a
Garden
Club member, PTA member, youth group supporter, and poll worker for
over 20
years. Her favorite past time was reading, especially historical
fiction
and books by Celestine Sibley.
A
private service will be held in the spring. In lieu of flowers,
the
family asks that memorials be made to the Care Givers at
Stonehenge III,
2579 Murphy Highway, Blairsville, 30512, in memory of Mrs. Simonton.

Mrs.
Edith Hower, age 76, of Ross Ridge Rd., Blairsville, GA passed away on
Wednesday December 29, 2010 at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Atlanta, GA
following a
brief illness. Edith was born in West Palm Beach, FL the daughter
of the
late Oliver B. Cobb and the late Helen Margaret Jensen-Cobb.
Edith was an
avid artist and crafter. She worked as a
buyer for Pioneer Linens in West Palm Beach, FL before her
retirement.
Mrs. Hower is preceded in death by her grandson Christopher Baker and
her sister
Helen. She was of the Presbyterian faith.
Surviving
Mrs. Hower are her husband Lawrence Hower of Blairsville, GA, two
daughters
Carol (Ron) Pude of Blairsville, GA and Mary (Bobby) Newell of Lake
Worth, FL
and a son Allen (Esther) Kirkland of Homosassa, FL and grandchildren
Nancy
Brown, Helen Freshour and Richard Baker, seven great grandchildren and
dear
friend, Betty Hall, and many other relatives and friends also
survive.
Services
will be held at a later date in West Palm Beach, FL. In lieu of

Mrs.
Florence Ruth,
affectionately known as, "Miss Ruthie", Carnley, age 97, of
Blairsville, GA, passed away at her daughter's home in Blairsville on
Saturday,
December 18, 2010.
"Miss
Ruthie" was born Thursday, January 23, 1913, in Houghton, MI, a
daughter
of the late Alvin Theodore and Hilma Mary (Heilkka) Steller. She had worked as a waitress for Morans in San
Francisco, CA, before accepting Christ as her Savior in 1951. Then she became a full time military wife and
mother. She was married aboard the USS
Sierra April 6, 1947 in San Diego, CA, to John Quentin Carnley. They were the first couple to ever get
married aboard a military vessel. "Miss
Ruthie" and her husband started a church in their home on Cedar Street
in
Milton, FL in 1959. It became Northside Baptist Church where John served as
a Deacon and "Miss Ruthie" was a Sunday School Teacher. Later
Northside Baptist became Stewart Street
Baptist Church. Then it became West Florida Baptist Church, in Milton,
FL,
where she remained a faithful member until 1998. In
1993 she was honored as "Mother of
Year" and received a plaque which reads "Her children will rise up
and call her blessed" Proverbs 31: 28. She
was a Godly example to many of the women
and young ladies there. "Miss
Ruthie" became a member of First Baptist Church of Blairsville in 1998,
and was a member of the Charity Sunday School Class and never missed a
service
until this past year. She was preceded
in death by her husband of 50 years, John Quentin Carnley, also six
sisters and
four brothers and a baby great granddaughter.
"Miss
Ruthie" is survived by, chosen daughter, God's gift through adoption,
Sherry Carnley Moriarty and son-in-law Dick Moriarty Jr. of
Blairsville,
grandchildren, Rich Moriarty and wife Sonda of Oviedo, FL and Kimberly
Moriarty
Marek and husband Butch of Blairsville, seven great-grandchildren:
Justin
Richard Moriarty, Katie Lynn Moriarty, Daniel Quentin Moriarty, Austin
Castle,
Natalie Castle, Alexis McKinzie Marek and Sidney Simone Marek.
A
celebration of
life service was held Friday, December 31, 2010 at 12 noon at the First
Baptist
Church of Blairsville With Dr. Fred Lodge officiating. The family
visited with
friends at the church for one hour prior to the service.
“Miss Ruthie” was eulogized by her daughter,
Sherry, and special music was presented by Sherry and granddaughter
Kimberly
Marek. Graveside
services were held in Serenity
Gardens in Milton, FL, with Rev. Alan Stewart officiating.
Pallbearers there were Dick Moriarty and Walt
chambers.

Mr. Audie
Henson age
72 of West Teague Rd., Talking Rock GA formerly of Blairsville, passed
away on
Wednesday Dec. 29, 2010 in the Floyd Medical Center in Rome, GA
following an
extended illness. Mr. Henson was born on
October 23, 1938 in Union County, the son of Adell Brown Henson and the
late
William Grady Henson. Audie was a past
member of the Dooley Masonic Lodge F&AM. He
enjoyed building birdhouse and designing
landscaping. He was preceded in death by
a brother, William Henson Jr. and a son-in-law, Larry Stewart. He was a loving husband, father, brother,
grandfather, great grandfather and great-great grandfather. Mr. Henson was a member of the Ebenezer
Baptist Church.
Surviving
Mr. Henson
are his loving wife of fifty years, Mary Ann Helton Henson of Talking
Rock, his
mother, Adell Henson of Blairsville, two daughters and one son-in-law,
Janey
and Aaron Walls of Dothan, AL, Debbie Rice of Mineral Bluff, GA, one
brother
and sister-in-law, Sammy and Joyce Henson of Blairsville, four
grandchildren,
Miranda Parker, Lacey Johnson, Gene Rice and Kacee Rice, four great
grandchildren, Jessica Pack, Jacob Pack, Mikayla Pack and Nicholas
Parker, one
great grandchild, Kayden Horn, many other relatives and friends also
survive.
Funeral
services were
held on Saturday Jan. 1, 2011 at 2 p.m. from the Mountain View Chapel
with the
Rev. Billy Dotson officiating. Special
music was presented by the Copper City Quartet. The
following gentleman served as pallbearers,
Kelly Parker, Stevie Henson, James Bridges, Charles Shore, Darrell
Bridges,
Darren Bridges, Dustin Rogers and Charlie Shore. Interment
followed in the Ebenezer Baptist
Church Cemetery. The family met with
friends at the funeral home on Friday evening from 6-9 p.m.

On
December 31, 2010, Daniel M. Bartell passed
away at Emory University Hospital after a brief illness.
Born on Mar h 4, 1945 in Boston, MA, Dan
relocated with his wife, Janan, to Blairsville, GA in the spring of
2007.
Dan will
be best
remembered by family and friends for his gentle manner, his contagious
smile
and his quest for learning and sharing what he had learned with others. Dan was admired for his ability to make light
of stressful situations and his penchant for colorful, patterned shirts. He received his BS, MS and PhD in Physics
form the University of Kentucky. He spent
most of his career as a scientist and software engineer in the bio-tech
field. He retired from Affymetrix,
Sunnyvale, CA in 2007. Since moving to
Blairsville, Dan was a volunteer math tutor at Union County High School. He was also an avid supporter, volunteer and
member of the Board of Directors of ICL at Young Harris College.
Dan is
survived by
his best friend and spouse, Janan Bartell of Blairsville, as well as
his son
and daughter-in-law, Jason and Penelope Bartell and granddaughter,
Ariel
Bartell, all of Colorado; a stepson Philip Croak and granddaughter
Marissa
Croak and grandson, Evan Croak, of Florida; four sisters, Virginia
DeRosa
(husband Joe DeRosa) of Connecticut, Helen Kelly (husband Larry Kelly)
of
Tennessee, Myra Schimke and Carol Smith of California; a sister-in-law,
Shirley
Reynolds of Blairsville and a brother-in-law, Douglas Carr of Florida,
and many
nieces and nephews. He was predeceased
by his parents, Alfred and Rhoda Bartell and two brothers, Robert
Bartell and
David Bartell.
A
memorial service
will be scheduled at a later date. In
lieu of flowers, the family requests remembrances be made in the way of
a
donation to ICL and forwarded to the: Institute for Continuing Learning
at

Mrs. Lois
Elizabeth Townsend, age 75 of Blairsville,
GA, passed away on Saturday, January 1, 2011 following a period of
declining
health.
She was
born to the
late Roland Lee and Rushie (Plott) Barnes on June 7, 1935 in
Blairsville, GA.
She is
survived by
daughter, Gail Walker, of Lawrenceville, GA, sisters, Louise Wimpey, of
Blairsville, GA, Evelyn Jean Townsend, of Athens, GA, Betty Kilgore, of
Buford,
GA, granddaughter, Alana Walker, three great grandchildren and a number
of
nieces and nephews also survive.
Funeral services were held on
Monday, January 3, 2011 at 2 p.m. from Old Union Baptist church
