Mrs.
Elizabeth Knopp, age 76, of Blairsville, Georgia, passed away Monday,
December
28, 2009 North Georgia Medical Center in Ellijay, Georgia.
Mrs.
Knopp was born in Bristol, Virginia, on October 4,
1933, a daughter of the late Ted Layafette (sic) and Pauline Houser
Nidiffer. She had lived in Baltimore,
Maryland before moving to Blairsville in 1984.
Elizabeth
had been predeceased by her parents; a sister,
Betty Smith; a brother, Joe Nidiffer; and a daughter, Pamela Mace.
Surviving
family members are her husband, Robert Knopp, of Blairsville; son and
daughter-in-law, Robert, Jr., and Debra Knopp, of Baltimore, Maryland;
daughter
and son-in-law, Denise and Wayne Seymour, of Conyers, Georgia; brother,
Ted L.
Nidiffer, Jr., of Baltimore; sister, Joyce Beatty, of Baltimore;
sister, Nancy
Groen, of Blairsville; sister, Pamela Kent, of Pueblo, Colorado; and
sister,
Barbara Houston, of Orlando, Florida; Grandchildren: Jennifer Arnold,
Sandra
Baldwin, Joshua Seymour, Jeffrey Seymour, Megan Knopp, Katelyn Seymour,
and
David Knopp; two great grandchildren: Nathan Arnold and Dodge Arnold.
Funeral
services were held Thursday, December 31, 2009, at 2:00 p.m., at the
Cochran
Funeral Home of Blairsville Chapel, with Rev. Jerry Helton officiating. The following gentlemen were selected to
serve as pallbearers: Joshua Seymour, Jeffrey Seymour, David Knopp,
Larry
Swanson and Jim Kent. Burial was in
Union Memory Gardens Cemetery.

Hobert
L. Payne age 87, of Blairsville, GA, passed away Saturday, January 2,
2010 at
his residence.
Hobert was
born on June 6, 1922 in Suches, GA, to the late Edward and Emma Jane
Harkins
Payne. He was of the Baptist faith and
was preceded in death by sisters Mattie Plott, Bessie Gilreath, and
Bonnie
Payne; brothers, Willie “Bill” Payne and J.P. Payne.
Survivors include:
wife of 57 years, Evelyn Everett Payne of the home, daughter &
son-in-law,
Rachel & Marshall Lance of Cumming, GA, son, Gary Payne of
Blairsville,
sisters, Bertha Garner of Blairsville, GA, Martha Hawkins of Auburn, GA
and
Mary Hensley of Blairsville, GA, sisters and husband, Nora & Joe
Evans of
Douglasville, GA and Grapell & Eugene Rich of Blairsville, GA,
grandson
& wife, Chris & Amanda Anderson, grandson, Matthew Lance,
granddaughter, Krista Dayton and great
grandson, Landon Anderson. Several
nieces, nephews, and other relatives also survive.
Funeral
services were held Tuesday, January 5, 2010 at 2:00 PM from the Cochran
Funeral
Home Chapel with Rev. Jerry Karnes and Rev. Earl Bishop officiating. Pallbearers were Billy Payne, Paul Garner,
Eddie rich, TJ Plott, Shane Payne and Perry Evans.
Honorary pallbearers were Jurl Gilreath,
Jerry Payne and Glenn Payne. Burial will
follow in Mt. Pleasant #1 Baptist Church Cemetery.

Mr. James
Russell Legg, age 54, of Hogback Drive, blue ridge,
formerly of Blairsville, passed away on Thursday, Dec. 31, 2009 in the
Fannin
Regional Hospital following a brief illness.
Mr. Legg was born on Jan. 30, 1944 in Towns County, GA the son
of Hubert
Legg and the late Betty Ann Tanner Legg.
Russell was employed with Lance Trucking at the time of his
death. He was a loving husband, father,
son, brother
and grandfather. Mr. Legg was a member
of Youngstown Baptist Church.
Surviving Mr.
Legg are his loving wife of eighteen years, Charlotte McFarland Legg of
Blue
Ridge, one son and daughter-in-law, Anthony and Tiffany Stanley of Blue
Ridge,
three daughters and one son-in-law, Trish and Brad Thomas of Blue
Ridge,
Candace Legg of KY, Sabrina Legg of KY, seven grandchildren, Hailee and
Hannah
Mealer, Emilee Thomas, Logan DeWitt, Kalliee, Madison and Parker
Stanley, many
other relatives and friends also survive.
Funeral
services were held on Sunday, Jan. 3, 2010 from the Mountain View
chapel with
the Rev. Ned Wilcoxin and Rev. Lee Griggs officiating.
Special music will be presented by Lee and
Kathy Griggs and the Ned Wilcoxin family.
The following gentlemen served as pallbearers:,
David Tanner, Adam Wetzel, Brad Thomas, S.R. Abercrombie, Danny
McFarland and
Kurt Wetzel. Serving as honorary
pallbearers were Jack Liu, Ryan Shealy, Chad Gassaway, Larry Lance,
Casey
Dozier, Buddy Pittman, Johnny Davis, Randall Colwell, Coy Colwell and
Jonathan
Hood. Interment will follow in the
Pleasant Grove Baptist church Cemetery.

Richard
“Dick” Roberts, age 77, of Blairsville, Georgia who resided with his
wife Laura
and sister-in-law Barbara Adair, was taken to Union General Hospital on
the
evening of Dec. 27, 2009. His family was
gathered together as he died peacefully, several hours later on the
morning of
Dec. 28, 2009, the result of kidney failure due to diabetes, heart
disease, and
CMT/Muscular Dystrophy.
A retired
small business owner, he was preceded in death by his mother Esther
Ruth (Nye)
Roberts, his father Charles Raymond Roberts, a brother Stanley Roberts
and a
half brother Vaughn Roberts.
He was the
eldest son of Esther and “Charlie”, born in Cortland, New York. He graduated from Groton Central High School,
Groton, N.Y. in 1950 and married on Dec. 14, 1950.
He is
survived by his loving wife of 59 years, Laura Jean (Dassance) Roberts,
his 3
children; Ramona Allyn (Roberts) Steward and Tim Eugene Roberts of
Florida, and
Kanina Marie (Roberts) Palmer, husband John Palmer of New York, 4
beloved
grandchildren; Tyler John Palmer, Kierstyn Allyn Palmer, Arianna
Roberts
Palmer, Nathaniel Thomas Palmer of New York, a brother Harold Roberts
(Florida),
a sister Phyllis Ellis (Florida), a brother David Roberts (Florida),
and a
sister Dorothy Nemecek (New York). He is
also survived by many brother and sister-in-laws, nieces, nephews,
cousins, and
friends. He held a special place in all
our hearts and will be deeply missed.
At his
request, Dick was cremated and his ashes will be taken to the
Pultneyville Fire
Co. in New York to be scattered on Lake Ontario. Memorial
Services will be planned in Florida
and New York at a later due (to be announced).
In lieu of
flowers, the family requests that donations be made in his name to the
Muscular
Dystrophy Association.

Mrs.
Ethel Frances Yarrington, age 74, of Tomahawk lane, Blairsville,
formerly of
Vero Beach, FL, passed away on Sunday, Jan. 3, 1020 at her home
following an
extended illness. Mrs. Yarrington was
born on March 6, 1935 in Richmond, VA, the daughter of the late Richard
Francis
Cummings and the late Beatrice Margaret Brown Cummings.
She was preceded in death by her loving
husband, Ray Yarrington in 2007 and also by a brother, Richard Cummings. Ethel retired from the Indian River County
School Board in 1993 with over twenty five years of service. She was a loving wife, mother, sister,
grandmother and great-grandmother. Ethel
and Ray loved spending time and going camping with their grandchildren. One of Ethel’s hobbies was doll
collecting. Mrs. Yarrington was a member
of the Trinity Episcopal Church in Vero Beach, FL.
Surviving Mrs.
Yarrington are four daughters and two sons-in-law, Margaret Yarrington
of
Blairsville, Mary Lou and Mark Odum of Royal Palm Beach, FL, Laura and
Donald
Plante of Peachtree City, GA, Linda Yarrington of Ft. Mill, SC, one
brother and
sister-in-law, Donald and Shirley Cummings of Richmond, VA, six
grandchildren,
Emily and Andrew Odum, Alex Cole, Amanda Brantley, Stephen and Daniel
Plante,
and one great-grandchild, London Ray Brantley.
Many other relatives and friends also survive.
Funeral
services will be held on Thursday, Jan. 7, 2010 at 2:00 p.m. from the
Mountain
View Chapel with the Rev. Danny Bohler officiating.
Special music will be presented by Tommy and
Susie Murphy. Flowers are accepted or
donations may be made to the Union County Dialysis Center in memory of
Mrs.
Yarrington. The family met with friends

Mr.
Richard
Lee Smith, age 77, of Blue Ridge Hwy, Blairsville, formerly of Gadsden,
AL and
Akron, OH, passed away on Thursday, Dec. 31, 2009 at his home following
a brief
illness. Mr. Smith was born on Sept. 9,
1932 in Akron, OH, the son of the late William H. smith and the late
Mary Edna
Lowry Smith. Richard loved motorcycles
and loved to work. He was a craftsman
and a tool collector. His favorite
saying was “If I don’t do something everyday, it’s a day wasted out of
my
life.” He was preceded in death by two
brothers, Bernard and James Smith and one sister, Kathryn Shank. Mr. Smith was of the Baptist faith.
Surviving Mr.
Smith are his loving wife, Donna Jo Perry Smith of Blairsville, three
sons and
one daughter-in-law, Bill and Deborah Smith of Blairsville, Rick Smith
and Jim
Smith of Akron, OH, two daughters and one son-in-law, Vickie Baxter of
Loganville, GA, Mary Kay and Jack Skinner of Willis, TX, step-children,
Neal
Johnson of Hawaii, Don Johnson of WA, Monica and Edward Brown of Akron,
Tami
and Kevin Green of Canton, OH, six grandchildren, Tammy Harris, Stacey
Arning,
Dawn Simmons, Marcus Baxter, John Baxter and Lyndsay Smith, ten
great-grandchildren, eight step-grandchildren, nine step-great
grandchildren, many
other relatives and friends also survive.
