jason brown gilliland

Mr. Jason Brown Gilliland, age 88, of Blairsville, passed away Sunday, December 29, 2002 in Union General Hospital.

Mr. Gilliland was born July 8, 1914, in a small town in the Blue Grass County of Kentucky.  His parents, Victor and Birdie (Brown) Gilliland, were school teachers who raised Jason with the expectation that he would have a productive and fulfilling life, which he did.  He attended college and the University of Kentucky Law School.  After law school, he was employed by T.V.A. and sent to the mountains of North Georgia to handle legal matters related to construction of Lake Nottley.  While in Blairsville, he met Sarah Candler, the oldest child of Judge and Mrs. Thomas Candler.  With the outbreak of World War II, he enlisted in the Army as a Private, and shortly he and Sarah were married.  He was sent to the European theater, and as a company commander was injured during the Battle of the Bulge, earning the Purple Heart and Bronze Star.  After recovering in England, he was assigned to General Eisenhower’s staff and given charge of the map room, where redeployment of troops from Europe to Japan was planned.  Fortunately, the war in the pacific ended, and in 1946, Jason was discharged with the rank of Major.  He returned to Atlanta, where he practiced law for 45 years.  He was active in civic, church and business affairs.  He had a keen mind and wit, which accounts for a multitude of friends, most of whom he survived.  After losing Sarah in 1992, and shortly there after suffering a stroke, he moved with his son’s family to Blairsville, thus completing a journey begun 50 years earlier.

Jason was a devoted husband, father, grandfather and friend to the many who were privileged to know him.  A great athlete, he played college basketball and tennis and was physically active into his late 70’s.  He enjoyed his farm, driving his tractor and undertaking projects.  He maintained his sense of humor up until the last few weeks of his life, and his engaging personality attracted and delighted those around him up until the end.

As his parents hoped, Jason had a long and productive life.  He also enjoyed his life, his friends and his work, but he also endured the horrors of war and the tragic loss of Sarah after 50 years of marriage.  Eighty-eight years is a long life, more than most are allotted.  We are all part of God’s pattern, giving, receiving, experiencing both the good and the not so good that life presents.  Jason Gilliland, for whatever reason, gave and received a generous portion of the good things of life, and for that reason, though we shall miss him, we should likewise be thankful for this life.

He is survived by his son and daughter-in-law, Tom and Candy Gilliland of Blairsville, GA; grandson’s Jason and Tom Gilliland of Blairsville, GA; numerous nieces and nephews also survive.

Funeral services were held Tuesday, December 31, 2002 at 3:00 p.m. from the Chapel of Cochran Funeral Home with Rev. Eddie Herring officiating.  Music was by Josh Powell.  Pallbearers were W.C. Nelson, Bob Head, Jimmy Tallent, Bill Prather, Don Clement, Johnny Chastain, Billy Hyde, Steve Cockerham and Jamie Tallent.  Interment was in Union Memory Gardens.

Arrangements are under the direction Cochran Funeral Home of Blairsville, GA.
